Ling was subbed off after dislocating a shoulder in the unbeaten Cats' three-point win over premier Collingwood last Friday night, but is still rated a decent chance to play against the Blues.
Cats coach Chris Scott says an assessment of Ling will be made at a closed training session on Tuesday.
"He was a little bit sore, so he's no certainty to play, but we're hopeful," Scott said.
Scott says veterans Cameron Mooney (knee) and Darren Milburn (back) are likely to return, after missing the Magpies encounter.
He says despite questions over whether Ling's lack of pace could leave him exposed against quick players, he feels his skipper had done well on Judd previously.
"He's actually has a pretty good record on him," Scott said.
"I know that the past doesn't count for all that much.
"There's a bit of a view that Lingy's not the quickest player in the competition, I think that's probably generally accepted.
"But he's done pretty well on a lightning-fast player in Judd. We'd like to have him available to do that, certainly in parts, but I don't think that will be our one and only plan."
Scott says the Cats had to guard against a mental let-down after their tight win over the Magpies to climb to top spot.
He says with the Blues also looking like finishing high on the ladder, they had to be paid just as much respect.
