Adelaide to risk 'critical' Petrenko

Updated September 19, 2012 14:34:56

Adelaide will risk playing Jared Petrenko against Hawthorn on Saturday despite the forward dislocating a shoulder against Fremantle last week.

Petrenko injured his right shoulder in the final minutes of Adelaide's semi-final win on Friday night.

Crows coach Brenton Sanderson says Petrenko will be named in the side on Thursday, then face a fitness test on Friday morning before Adelaide fly to Melbourne.

"He did train today and every time I see him, he tells me that he's playing which is a good sign," Sanderson told reporters on Wednesday.

"He is such a strong kid, he's a player that is just desperate to play in a prelim final."

Sanderson said Petrenko was "critical for our forward set-up".

"He does provide great forward defensive pressure," Sanderson said.

"But also too he has kicked goals for us this year.

"And I'd hate to be tackled by him and I'd hate for him to hit me. He does send the fear of God through the opposition at times when he's in the area, when he hits, he hits hard."

Sanderson will be forced to make one change from his semi-final side, with defender Sam Shaw's season ending with a hamstring strain.

Utility Andy Otten, who has played just one AFL game since round five, is favoured to replace Shaw.

"He hasn't had his best season in terms of continuity and being in great form for the entire year," Sanderson said of Otten.

"But he is a good player, so if he's the one that comes in, I'm sure he will play his heart out and he can certainly play that role that Sam Shaw has been playing."

Grundy to miss final with Adelaide

Updated September 05, 2012 06:39:33

Heath Grundy will miss Sydney's clash with Adelaide at Football Park after failing in his appeal against his one-match suspension for striking Geelong's James Podsiadly.

Although video evidence look damning with Grundy's swinging arm striking the Cats' forward, the Swans opted to challenge the ruling knowing he would not miss a second week if found guilty.

Sydney claimed contact was not made with enough force to constitute a strike and that the action was reckless rather than intentional.

Grundy's absence will be felt against the Crows' tall forwards Kurt Tippett and Taylor Walker.

"It's pretty disappointing," Grundy said.

Sydney finished the home-and-away season in third, a place behind Adelaide. The victor on Saturday will earn a week's bye.

Jurrah quits Demons to stay in Adelaide

Updated September 03, 2012 17:40:00

Liam Jurrah has quit the Melbourne AFL club as he prepares for his criminal court case next year.

Port Adelaide appears to be Jurrah's main chance of continuing his career next season, after the club released a statement on Tuesday acknowledging it had already had contact with Jurrah's management.

Jurrah, due to face trial in Alice Springs in March over an alleged machete attack, moved to Adelaide in August to be with family.

He has been on indefinite leave at Melbourne during that time.

But while the Demons were hopeful he would return and play for them next season, Jurrah's manager now says the forward wants to remain in South Australia and hopes to join an Adelaide AFL club.

"Liam has decided he needs to be close to his family," Jurrah's manager Ned Guy told The Age website.

"At this point in time family is number one for Liam and they are based in Adelaide. We know things can change over time.

"Does he want to continue playing football?

"Yes he does. He is still very passionate about footy because he loves the game and he understands it can make a difference to his people and culture.

"But at the moment his happiness and well-being are the more important thing and for that he needs to be in Adelaide."

Guy said Jurrah understood that his decision meant he might not be picked up by Adelaide or Port Adelaide, which would mean an end to his AFL career.

In the statement, Port Adelaide general manager of football Peter Rohde said the club believed Jurrah was a "very talented player".

"At this point we have had only limited contact with Liam's management, but we think he is a very talented player," Rohde said.

"He is working through some complicated issues which we are keen to better understand before making any decision regarding our interest in bringing him to Port Adelaide."

The 23-year-old is facing three charges of aggravated assault and one count of unlawfully causing serious harm.

He has played only one game of football this season, Melbourne's round eight loss to Sydney. Jurrah suffered a serious ankle injury in the game.

Dockers down Port in Adelaide

Updated July 30, 2012 00:22:41

Fremantle is still knocking on the door of the top eight after a 27-point win over Port Adelaide at Football Park.

Skipper Matthew Pavlich kicked two goals for the Dockers along with Chris Mayne and Clancee Pearce, as they picked up their 10th win of the season, 11.9 (75) to 6.12 (48).

Nathan Fyfe was also among the Dockers' best after a lengthy stint on the sidelines following shoulder surgery in May.

It was a dismal performance from the Power, the home side managing just two goals to half-time and failing to add another major in the third term.

Only four goals, from nine scoring shots, in the final quarter added some respectability to the score.

Brett Ebert tried hard up forward kicking two goals while Brad Ebert was also effective along with Travis Boak and Daniel Stewart.

The Dockers jumped Port in the opening quarter with five goals to one to take a 24-point lead into the first break.

A series of defensive errors kept the Power under the pump throughout much of the term with only a goal to Brett Ebert at the 25-minute mark relieving some of the pressure.

By the main break Fremantle had extended the lead to 34 points but inaccurate kicking from the Dockers kept Port in the match.

The visitors added 1-5 for the term but restricted the Power to just a solitary point despite the home side kicking with the aid of a handy breeze.

In the third term the Power failed to kick a major with Fremantle adding three to extend the lead to 44 points as Pavlich started to have an impact up forward.

The Power had most of the play in the final quarter, but Fremantle steadied with two goals to continue its good form in July.

Port Adelaide: 6.12 (48) - Brett Ebert 2, Boak, Cornes, Stewart, Westhoff

Fremantle: 11.9 (75) - Mayne 2, Pavlich 2, Pearce 2, Fyfe, Mundy, Mzungu, Sutcliffe, Walters

Primus gone as Port Adelaide coach

Updated August 08, 2012 13:37:05

Port Adelaide Football Club has decided not to proceed with an optional third year on the contract of senior coach Matthew Primus.

Primus will not coach for the rest of the current season.

The longest-serving of the assistant coaches, Garry Hocking, will be caretaker coach for the last four rounds and the club is starting the search for Primus' replacement.

Primus, 37, said he was disappointed but accepted the unanimous decision of the Power's board.

"I thank the Port Adelaide Football Club for the opportunity to play and to coach," he said.

"It hasn't worked out the way I wanted. I had a plan to become a successful team and I won't get the opportunity to see it through. I love the club and I love the game and while I won't get the opportunity to see that through with Port Adelaide I hope that I will somewhere else.

"I maintain that this club is on an exciting journey, full of promise and with a group of players willing to be good players and [who] want to be a lot better than what they are now."

Primus urged the football club's fans to stick with it through the ups and downs, insisting there would be a brighter future.

He said he had been given the option of coaching out the 2012 season.

"You know, I had the choice to coach the next four games but I don't think I'd have the passion or the substance," he said.

The club has also announced Brett Duncanson is standing down as president, having held the job since 2009.

"We're in a very competitive industry and things don't always go the way we want them to, despite the best efforts of everybody involved," Duncanson said.

"I have supported Port Adelaide all my life and it's been an honour to serve as a director and president.

"I am particularly proud of the role I have played in reuniting the club, in making plans for AFL at Adelaide Oval and in reducing the club's debt, but this is a chance for a fresh set of eyes and a new energy."

Player Travis Boak refused to make any comment when he arrived at the club earlier.

Boak is out of contract and close to Primus.

He refused to say if the coaching decision would affect his future at Port.

There was a meeting of the senior players just before the formal announcement was made by the club.

Primus played 137 games for Port from the time it joined the AFL in 1997.

He retired as a player in 2005, then became an assistant to Mark Williams in the coaching team.

Primus stepped in as interim coach in 2010 when Williams was sacked and, with some early wins under his leadership, he became senior coach soon after, winning the job ahead of Chris Scott, who went to Geelong instead and took the Cats to a premiership in his first season.

Port has struggled under Primus as coach, managing just five wins this season.

The Power's CEO Keith Thomas said the club was taking some difficult decisions now with a longer-term view to being a highly-competitive AFL force once its home games moved to Adelaide Oval from 2014.

He denied suggestions the club was in crisis.

Gillard announces Adelaide Oval funding

Updated December 28, 2011 17:01:33

The Federal Government will provide $30 million towards the Adelaide Oval redevelopment.

The money will help to pay for 375 underground car parks and a wetland walk on the oval side of the River Torrens.

The Prime Minister Julia Gillard made the announcement at the oval this morning.

She says the funding will ease concerns about traffic congestion in the city during sporting events.

"What we've announced today is going to meet the needs of the local community so they're going to be reassured there will not be cars across their driveways," she said.

Three hundred of the car parks will be built beneath the new eastern stand with the remaining 75 to go beneath the indoor cricket centre at the oval's southern end.

The Prime Minister was flanked by South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) president Ian McLachlan, Acting Premier John Rau and Member for Adelaide Kate Ellis.

Ms Ellis conceded the contribution was less than the State Government initially asked for.

"I think South Australians would expect their treasurers to be asking for perhaps more money than they're going to get in the end. We think that this is a fair contribution."

SACA president Ian McLachlan says the funding will cover most of the remaining costs of the project.

"This extra 30 million really rounds out most of the important things that need to be done. There are some other things that we could do, but they're not essential," he said.

The State Opposition's treasury spokesman, Iain Evans, says the purpose of the funding is to cover the cost of a budget blow-out.

"Before the election, the State Government were telling everyone in South Australia that they could build the oval for $450 million and not a cent more," he said.

"The total cost now is well over $600 million, and the $30 million today primarily goes to paying for car parking that was already part of the project anyway."

The chief executive of the Infrastructure Department, Rod Hook, says the main purpose of the money is to provide extra parking space in the parklands.

"The two underground car parks, whilst they will contribute to support parking for major footy or cricket games, they will be mainly used for functions down here at the oval in non-major event days. That's 375 cars that otherwise may be parked around the surface in the northern parklands. Those cars can go underground and out of sight for the normal non-major event day," he said.

"We were already intending to do the 300 car parks underneath the eastern stand because that's part of the contract documents. The fact that the Federal Government is paying for that gives us roughly 15 million to redirect into other aspects of the project.

"We hadn't made a commitment to do the car park underneath the indoor cricket centre. We knew that we had to make a decision by the end of January on whether we had the funds to commit to that or not.

"This announcement today means we'll immediately commit to that."

The decision ends uncertainty about the Federal Government's contribution to the redevelopment, which was one of several infrastructure projects put on hold after the Queensland floods.

The State Government will spend $535 million on the redevelopment.

Work has begun on the project and is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2014 AFL season.

Crunch time looming for Pt Adelaide footy club

The SANFL adviser appointed to Port Adelaide Football Club board, John Irving, has resigned.

There are reports the League could take over the debt-ridden club.

The SANFL is said to have no cash reserves to let it keep underwriting the football club.

The Power says it is continuing to work with the SANFL.

In a statement, the club says it expects to report a significant financial turnaround of at least $2 million in 2011.

Former development coach with the Power and former SANFL Magpies player and coach Stephen Williams concedes it is a difficult time.

"If the Adelaide [Crows] footy club can't make money in Adelaide how is Port Adelaide going to make it?" he said.

"And the [Adelaide Oval] stadium deal is just not favourable to both clubs.

"Football certainly brings a lot of money to the SANFL in Adelaide but it goes straight to the SANFL and then they give it back to Port Adelaide."

Football unites behind Adelaide Oval

The Power, the Crows and the SANFL have united behind a "Yes" vote for Adelaide Oval.

The Adelaide Football Club, Port Adelaide Football Club and the South Australian National Football League have today written to their members encouraging them to vote in favour of the SACA proposal to pave the way for a redeveloped Adelaide Oval.

The message, which has been sent to thousands of Crows, Power and SANFL members across the State today, targets those who may also be members of the SACA - while also sending a strong message to the wider community.

SANFL Executive Commissioner Leigh Whicker said the three organisations were unanimous in their support for a yes vote.

"The SA Football Commission and League Directors, together with the executive and boards of the Adelaide Football Club and Port Adelaide Football Club, are unequivocal in their belief that a vote for the proposal will deliver a number of crucial benefits," Mr Whicker said.

"Together, we urge any football lovers who may also be SACA members to vote yes for the future of football and cricket and for South Australia as a whole."

"The Adelaide Football Club has been unashamedly diligent in working through the issues about a move to play games at a redeveloped Adelaide Oval," said CEO Steven Trigg.

"We have said - right from Day 1 - that we will only support a move to Adelaide Oval on behalf of all of our stakeholders, if we are significantly better off.

"We have now concluded that we will be, and we are urging any of our members who can vote on the SACA proposal to vote yes.

"We understand those who feel a strong affection for the status quo. However, the simple truth is that we have a once in a generation opportunity to create a stronger, more prosperous and more successful legacy for future generations."

A majority of 75 per cent of voters is required to amend the SACA's constitution, with proxy voting closing on April 28 ahead of the Special General Meeting on May 2.

"It's important that any football members who are also members of SACA have their say," said Port Adelaide Football Club CEO Mark Haysman.

"We want them to vote yes. For the Port Adelaide Football Club, the move to Adelaide Oval would change our world, and only for the better.

"This is a very exciting opportunity, not just for the Port Adelaide Football Club but all of football, cricket and for South Australia as a whole

Suns hoping to surprise Port Adelaide

Posted April 20, 2011 16:00:00

Gold Coast's lame start to its first AFL season could work in its favour against Port Adelaide at Football Park on Saturday, according to young Suns forward Dan Gorringe.

The 18-year-old Gorringe says the Power may be drawn into a false sense of security against the Suns, who have lost their opening three matches by an average of 93 points.

He drew similarities between the Power's playing list and that of the Gold Coast, although the Suns are more reliant on younger players.

"It will be good competition and a test for us against Port Adelaide," Gorringe said.

"If we can catch them off guard and play some good footy early we will go a long way to winning the game.

"The are a lot like us, they are a young list.

"If we get out there and hit them hard, because they won't be expecting big things from us, [we might be able to] catch them off guard early ... this is one we might get a win over."

Many feel the Suns will not win a match in their debut season after choosing to invest heavily in young players and the future rather than recruiting seasoned veterans.

Having such a young list and more than a dozen first year players in the side means the Suns are prone to mistakes and simple turnovers and lack physically mature bodies to handle a full game.

Gorringe admits the Suns' inconsistency has been very costly and they need to string together four solid quarters to seriously challenge for a win.

"[Port Adelaide] are a bit of an up-and-down side and can be a bit like us - inconsistent," Gorringe said.

"Last week was a good chance to get a win but we fell away in the fourth quarter.

"Consistency, being competitive and hard at the ball for four quarters (are the key to winning), being so young it's hard to keep it up for four quarters, so if we can focus on that area I think we can win."

Taken at number 10 in the 2010 national draft, Gorringe will be slightly more familiar with the vast expanses of Football Park, having played at the ground in the under 18 competition and in a final with Norwood.
