Cats' Bartel banned for two games

Updated July 10, 2012 12:48:46

Geelong will be without Jimmy Bartel for Friday night's clash with Collingwood, after the Brownlow medallist accepted a two-match ban for striking Gold Coast's Trent McKenzie.

The AFL Tribunal will sit on Tuesday night after the Giants' Jeremy Cameron, and West Coast's Luke Shuey and Quinten Lynch opted to challenge charges laid by the Match Review Panel.

However Bartel was one of five players to accept bans sanctioned by the panel.

Bartel struck McKenzie in the second quarter of the Cats' unconvincing win over the Suns at Carrara on Sunday.

Cameron has been charged with a level two striking offence after trailing a fist which hit Hawthorn's Clinton Young in the third quarter of the Giants' 162-point thumping by the Hawks.

If Cameron fails in his challenge he will be suspended for one match, and will be ruled ineligible for the Rising Star award, for which he is nominated.

West Coast had two players charged in their come-from-behind win against North Melbourne.

Shuey has been charged with a level three striking offence against the Kangaroos' Lindsay Thomas. His poor record and carry-over points increase the penalty to a three-match ban, prompting the Eagles to challenge the decision.

West Coast forward Lynch was charged with tripping against the Kangaroos' Shaun Atley. His record of one match suspended in the last three years means the charge carries a one-match penalty, which would rule him out of this weekend's match-of-the-round against Sydney at Subiaco.

Aside from Bartel and Collingwood's Sharrod Wellingham, who had accepted a three-match ban for his heavy bump which resulted Carlton's Kade Simpson sustaining a fractured jaw, three other players will miss matches after accepting the panel's rulings.

Richmond's Matt White will be out for three matches after accepting a charge of a front-on bump on Melbourne's James Frawley. He also accepted a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record for striking the Demons' Luke Tapscott.

Essendon will be without tagger Heath Hocking for this week's match against Port Adelaide at Football Park, after he accepted a two-match ban for rough conduct against St Kilda's Lenny Hayes.

Melbourne's Lynden Dunn has taken a one-match ban for striking the Tigers' Luke McGuane.

Collingwood's Jackson Paine has accepted a reprimand for tripping Carlton's Mitch Robinson, while Melbourne's Frawley has accepted a reprimand for striking Richmond small forward Robin Nahas.

Geelong lose injured Bartel for Crows game

Updated May 11, 2012 16:44:46

Geelong midfielder Jimmy Bartel has been ruled out of Saturday's clash against Adelaide because of an ankle injury.

The Brownlow medallist was named in Geelong's side, but the club said on Friday he wouldn't play against the Crows at Football Park.

Bartel's omission is a blow for the Cats as they confront an in-form Adelaide side sitting in fifth spot - one above Geelong - with five wins from six games.

Despite Adelaide's healthy start, Crows ruckman Sam Jacobs has urged his team-mates not to think about playing finals for the first time in three seasons.

"I don't think we should even be looking at finals," Jacobs said.

"We have got our key indicators and stuff like that, if we do them well, then we're going to win games.

"But we know it's only early in the year."

The Crows won just seven games last year, but Jacobs, who will be without his suspended ruck partner Shaun McKernan, cautioned against reading too much into their rapid recovery.

"We're obviously sitting pretty well but we have had a good draw to start the year," he said.

"And now we're coming into another pretty challenging patch.

"I guess in another couple of months' time we'll know more about where we're going to sit this year.

"We're just focusing on the basics at the moment and as long as we're doing them well, hopefully the results will look after themselves."

But Jacobs said after downing Sydney at the SCG last weekend, claiming the scalp of reigning premier Geelong would be "massive" for the Crows.

"It's important we put up another good showing this week, but we know how big a challenge it's going to be," he said.

"But there is a really good belief in the group at the moment, especially after last week's win."

In other injury news, St Kilda is without Sam Fisher for Monday night's clash with Carlton.

The key defender injured his hamstring against Hawthoern last week and will be replaced by Tom Ledger.

Medallist Bartel puts Geelong first

Updated October 02, 2011 12:54:52

Geelong utility Jimmy Bartel elevated himself to a new level of super-stardom on Saturday by claiming the Norm Smith Medal alongside his third premiership medallion.

But the 2007 Brownlow Medallist spoke from the heart when he said he was not all that fussed about individual honours.

First-year Cats coach Chris Scott mentioned several times in his post-match press conference about the ultra-competitive nature of Geelong's playing group, which has now won three AFL premierships in five years.

Clearly, that is what drives the two-time All-Australian Bartel.

Starting on the wing, Bartel had 26 possessions and kicked three brilliant goals in his side's 38-point win over Collingwood at the MCG, helping to fill the gap up forward following big man James Podsiadly's departure in the second term with a dislocated shoulder.

"Totally no disrespect to it or anything like that, but I'm just happy with the other one, the premiership medal," Bartel said when asked about his Norm Smith Medal for best afield.

"We have a pretty fierce group that plays for premierships and that's all I wanted. This is some pretty nice icing on the cake."

Bartel's first goal late in the second quarter, a tricky set shot from the boundary, helped Geelong stay within three points at half-time.

The Cats stormed home with a 10-goal second half to Collingwood's three and Bartel with two more goals in the second half showed his class.

Used at times at half-back this season, the 27-year-old was always prepared to try a few snaps at goal from tough angles after training on Geelong's wintry nights in an attempt to stay ready for a move forward.

"Probably to Scotty's and the coaches' annoyance, I do hang around after training and kick barrels and torps probably a bit more than they'd like," Bartel grinned.

"It probably did help today."

The 187cm utility was so focused on the game that Geelong's six-goal advantage late in the final term had no effect on his attitude.

"Probably only with a couple of minutes to go we thought we had it won," he said.

"Everyone was spent. We were just hoping the siren would go."

Bartel said the 2007, 2009 and 2011 premiership sides were all quite special.

"It's hard to put one over the top of the other," he said.

No decision on Ling's future

Meanwhile, Cats captain Cameron Ling says he will let the euphoria and a few beers wash over him before he decides whether to continue his AFL career next season.

Ling, who turns 31 ahead of next season, played a vital role in the Cats' win at the MCG.

The only thing missing from Ling's complete blanketing of Dane Swan was a ransom note - so effectively did he hold the dangerous Magpies midfielder hostage for more than 100 minutes.

But despite a superb match on the game's biggest stage, Ling remains unsure whether he will go on next season.

He will wait until celebrations have died down and he speaks with coach Chris Scott before he makes a final decision.

"I'm not sure yet - I might have a quiet beer over the next few days and have a chat with Scotty," he said.

"For now, I'm just enjoying it. I must admit, it's that fun and that special that you'd like to go and do it again.

"But I'll have a think about it a bit later. The way you feel right now, you feel you've got another 10 years left in you."

Ling's selfless effort to tag Swan out of the match was one of a dozen quality performances from the Cats, who spoke before the match about producing a consistent team effort rather than relying on individual brilliance to break the Pies.

"It was something we focused on. There was no need for anyone to do anything sensational or out of the ordinary," Ling said.

"We all contributed and played our role as best we could, and that's all I tried to do."
