Crows given more time to build case

Updated November 16, 2012 17:43:42

The AFL has granted a stay of execution to Adelaide and star forward Kurt Tippett, adjourning Monday's commission hearing over salary cap breaches to an undetermined later date.

The league said in a statement on Friday afternoon that Crows football operations general manager Phil Harper had sought more time for the club to prepare its submissions.

The Crows were to have answered charges of salary cap cheating and draft tampering laid by the AFL over their Kurt Tippett dealings on Monday.

Key forward Kurt Tippett, Adelaide chief executive Steven Trigg, the club's football operations manager Phil Harper and former football operations manager John Reid have also been charged and will front an AFL commission hearing in Melbourne.

But the hearing has been postponed indefinitely to give Harper, who was only charged on Tuesday, and the Crows more time to form their defence with lawyers.

"The Commission will provide the requested extra time, and that the hearing will not proceed on Monday as previously scheduled, to ensure that natural justice is provided," the AFL said.

"A new hearing date is yet to be set, but will be advised to all parties, the media and the wider football public as soon as it is determined."

Meanwhile Adelaide captain Nathan van Berlo is "flabbergasted" at reports he and the Crows are being investigated for third party payments outside the Crows' salary cap.

Van Berlo's manager Colin Young said the Fairfax Media report was "an absolute disgrace", saying all aspects of the Adelaide skipper's contract had been AFL approved.

The AFL said next Thursday's national draft will go ahead as scheduled despite the adjournment.

The annoucement came as the AFL warned more players will be scrutinised for third party deals after the league ruled Chris Judd's agreement with Carlton sponsor Visy can no longer sit outside the Blues' salary cap.

The deal, payment for Judd's services as ambassador for Visy, played a key role in the superstar midfielder moving to Carlton from West Coast in 2008.

Campaign will aim to build umpiring respect

Updated September 25, 2012 13:12:49

The SANFL will work with country football clubs to encourage greater respect for umpires.

It is working with the Spencer Gulf League to deal with an assault case involving an umpire during last weekend's grand final at Port Pirie.

The injured umpire has been to Adelaide to consult a plastic surgeon about his facial injuries.

A spectator is facing charges.

Darren Chandler, from the SANFL, says a strong message needs to be sent that poor behaviour is unacceptable.

"There'll be a DVD launched next year about respecting umpires and what the responsibilities of the community and the players and coaches etcetera are," he said.

"[We want to] put it out there as a tool that clubs and leagues can use to drive that message home."

Saints need Crows win to build momentum

Updated June 14, 2012 14:27:40

St Kilda's coach Scott Watters has heaped the pressure on his players to start winning consecutive AFL matches.

The Saints have had a patchy season to this point to sit just inside the top eight on percentage.

The only time St Kilda has strung together two wins in a row was in rounds two and three, with victories over Gold Coast and the Western Bulldogs respectively.

St Kilda plays fifth-placed Adelaide at Football Park on Friday night.

Watters says the game is a great chance for the players to deliver another four points before heading into the bye.

"We've probably had some honourable losses if there's such a term," Watters said.

"Like any side that wants to really establish itself you need repeat wins.

"Look it's a big challenge, we're well aware of where Adelaide sits, and the strength of their game and their list but we go over quietly confident we can be competitive."

The Saints' task to achieve consecutive wins has been made slightly easier with the news that Adelaide is unlikely to have utility Graham Johncock in the side for Friday night's match.

Johncock has not trained all week and was again missing during Adelaide's match-eve session on Thursday.

The veteran appears long odds to front against St Kilda in a match Crows defender Michael Doughty says is crucial for his club.

The Crows enter the game after a bye, while the Saints have just a six-day break following their away thrashing of Gold Coast.

The experienced backman said while Adelaide rested, the Saints collected invaluable confidence by winning in Queensland.

"It's a hard one to measure. They have been up in the Gold Coast and played a very good game of footy so they would be confident," he said.

"The confidence factor versus us having a week off - it's line ball, isn't it?

"I'd prefer our group to have the week off and get ready for this week."

Adelaide, the surprise packet of the season, are seeking to post their ninth win from 11 matches - a certain platform for a return to finals.

But Doughty said the early-season success didn't prompt a resetting of goals during the bye.

"You talk about the first 10 weeks and what we have achieved, but it's only a starting point," he said.

"This group is pretty determined to keep improving throughout the rest of the year."
