Tippett looks forward to Swans challenge

Boom Sydney recruit Kurt Tippett says the Swans are the perfect fit as he prepares for the challenge of missing the first half of the 2013 AFL season with his new club.

Tippet's two-month campaign to play for the premiers ended in success on Tuesday when he was taken by Sydney in the preseason draft.

He will be suspended for the first 11 games of 2013, following an investigation into draft and salary cap breaches by his former club Adelaide.

Forward-ruckman Tippett trained with Sydney for the first time on Wednesday.

'It's very exciting to be here in Sydney, after a long off-season, a few little challenges," Tippett said, while acknowledging there was a time he feared he would not be able to make his way to the Swans.

"I look forward to playing football, settling in, training hard and preparing myself well and earning the guys' trust over the summer.

"It's been a challenge for myself and my family but I'm happy to put that all behind me now."

Tippett said Sydney was a great club and a great city.

"The future here is very bright, the prospect of coming here and playing alongside guys like Jarrad (McVeigh), Adam Goodes and Sam Reid is very exciting for me," he said.

He was philosophical about having to sit out so many games at the start of the year.

"It's going to be a challenge but they are the cards we've been dealt and we'll make the most of it," Tippett said.

McVeigh said Sydney viewed the 25-year-old Tippett as a long-term player for the club.

Jetta to challenge striking charge

Essendon forward Leroy Jetta will challenge a one-match ban for striking at the tribunal on Tuesday night.

Jetta was booked by the match review panel for a punch to the stomach of Richmond defender Dylan Grimes during Saturday night's clash at the MCG.

Due to his previous poor disciplinary record, Jetta could not get the one-match ban reduced with an early guilty plea.

But he has pleaded guilty to a separate charge of staging in an attempt to draw a free kick and been issued with a written reprimand.

Western Bulldogs' utility Dylan Addison has accepted a one-match ban for striking Gold Coast livewire Harley Bennell.

Greater Western Sydney's Toby Greene will miss Saturday's clash against the Bombers after pleading guilty to a rough conduct charge involving Brisbane's Jed Adcock.

North Melbourne skipper Brent Harvey has accepted a reprimand and 93.75 carryover points for striking young Port Adelaide star Chad Wingard.

Kangaroos' team-mate Lindsay Thomas was fined $900 for making an obscene gesture in the narrow loss to the Power.

In another incident from the same match, Port's Jackson Trengove accepted a reprimand and 93.75 points for making forceful front-on contact against Kieran Harper.

West Coast's Daniel Kerr has been fined $900 for making negligent contact with an umpire during Sunday's win over St Kilda.

Johnson to challenge charge

Steve Johnson will challenge a rough conduct charge at the tribunal on Tuesday night, although the Geelong forward has pleaded guilty to a separate report for tripping.

Johnson will miss Saturday's clash with Brisbane if he is unsuccessful in overturning the charge of rough conduct against Richmond captain Chris Newman during Sunday's match at Kardinia Park.

Due to his existing bad record, Johnson could not have got the sanction lowered from one match to a reprimand with an early guilty plea.

But he was reprimanded and had 78 demerit points added to his record for tripping Tigers midfielder Daniel Jackson.

North Melbourne forward Lindsay Thomas will also appear before the tribunal on Tuesday night in a bid to overturn a three-match ban for a level three rough conduct charge from an incident that left Sydney speedster Gary Rohan with a broken leg.

St Kilda key forward Justin Koschitzke has accepted a one-match ban for striking former team-mate Zac Dawson in Friday night's clash with Fremantle.

Geelong's Trent West (rough conduct) and Sydney's Ted Richards (striking) have both pleaded guilty to incidents from round three and been reprimanded.

Greater Western Sydney defender Chad Cornes ($1,800) and Adelaide's Matthew Jaensch ($900) have been fiend for wrestling with each other.

Roos rise to Bombers challenge

North Melbourne picked up a third straight victory and piled a fourth consecutive loss on Essendon with a thrilling 21-point win at Docklands on Saturday.

The Kangaroos, who had lost four games by 14 points or less previously this season, were made to endure another nail-biting final quarter, despite leading by as much as 31 points during the second term.

But North's composure came to the fore against an undermanned Essendon, kicking the last four goals of the contest to prevail 17. 9 (111) to 12.18 (90).

The win moved North Melbourne into ninth spot on 20 points and just half a win below the Bombers, who are desperately clinging on to the top eight.

The Roos led from the time captain Brent Harvey kicked the opening goal of the match, 16 seconds in, until the Bombers hit the front 12 minutes into the last term.

It was a gutsy effort by Essendon to work its way back into the game after it frittered away chances with 1.8 in the first quarter, then lost Heath Hocking to injury in the second and Cale Hooker in the third.

Despite those setbacks, the Bombers looked a strong chance to snatch a comeback win when they kicked three of the last four goals of the third term and the first two of the last to move six points clear.

But after Jake Melksham goaled to give the Bombers the lead, they did not score again for the rest of the match.

North Melbourne kicked the last 4.3 of the game, big man Drew Petrie (three goals) capping the win with a sensational snap from the pocket close to full-time after receiving a Harvey handball.

"The cream rises to the top in those situations," North coach Brad Scott said.

"A couple of Brent Harvey's efforts when the game was on the line and Daniel Wells' ability to go back with the flight of the ball and mark the ball in crucial contests (were important).

"They're really showing the way for our young players ... in terms of exactly how you've got to perform when the heat's on in a close game."

Lindsay Thomas shrugged off some poor performances of late to finish with a tally of four goals for North.

Earlier, midfielders Wells and Harvey were excellent as the Kangaroos kicked the first five goals of the match, with Sam Wright kicking two in the first term and another early in the second.

Essendon scored eight behinds before Paddy Ryder kicked his side's first goal after the quarter-time siren.

The Kangaroos stretched their lead with three quick goals early in the second quarter, including a slick snap to Wells to move 31 points clear.

Poor ball use

But the Bombers lifted in the midfield and with Michael Hurley (four goals) providing a good attacking target, they turned the match into a tense contest.

Bombers coach James Hird rued a terrible start by his side, who conceded the first five goals and scored 0.8 before they kicked their first goal, after the quarter-time siren.

He said the injuries hurt their chances.

But he also blamed poor ball use, a constant throughout Essendon's losing streak.

"That to me is the one thing we need to do, is use the ball better," Hird said.

"We're getting our hands on the ball and we need to use it better going forward."

But he said despite the hype over the club's strong season start, they had never viewed themselves as more than a developing team.

Hurley was one of the big positives out of the afternoon after recently returned from injury, while key defender Tayte Pears also impressed in his first game since round 13 last year.

Hird was hopeful Hocking would not miss any games, but Hooker faces three weeks out.

North have some concerns, with ruckman Todd Goldstein needing scans, after rolling his ankle and also on report for an alleged strike, while defender Luke Delaney could face scrutiny over the clash which felled Hocking.

Top Cats answer Carlton challenge

Undefeated Geelong honoured the passing of club legend Bob Davis with another thrilling Friday night victory, downing Carlton by two points at Docklands.

After prevailing in a heavyweight clash against the Pies seven days ago, and following an emotional week after the death of AFL Hall of Famer Davis, the slow-starting Cats did well to reel in Carlton's early 20-point advantage and kick on for an emotional 15.12 (102) to 14.16 (100) triumph.

After drawing level at 8.6 apiece by half-time, a three-goal burst by the elusive Travis Varcoe gave Geelong its first lead of the match in the third term but the Blues battled back to trail by just seven points at the last change.

Victorious in every fourth quarter this season, the Cats surprisingly surrendered the lead early as an injury-hampered Chris Judd inspired the Blues back into the contest.

But true to their 2011 form late in games, Geelong answered the challenge with goals to Paul Chapman, Steve Johnson (three goals) and James Podsiadly pushing them back in front once again.

Carlton would not lie down and following a clever goal by the outstanding Jarrad Waite, ruckman Robbie Warnock had a point blank opportunity to put the Blues in front with 90 seconds left but shanked his set shot.

The Cats are now nine from nine in their clashes with Carlton at Docklands and boast one, two and three-point wins on Friday nights this season after absorbing victories over both last year's grand finalists.

"We probably don't want it to be like that (so close), but it just shows the boys tenacity, the grit to fight it out," youngster Allen Christensen, who called the toss for the Cats as part of Indigenous round, told Grandstand.

"They are one of the best tackling sides in the comp, Scotty made sure that we knew that before the game," Christensen added after the Blues won the tackle count 75-57.

"We knew the pressure was going to be there and we tried to match it with them.

"They probably beat us on the night but we keep fighting it out and got the bikkies."

Blues still a threat

Joel Selwood had a quiet last quarter after amassing 25 touches through three quarters but was vital in sparking the Geelong comeback along with the likes of James Kelly, Jimmy Bartel, Johnson and Varcoe.

Veteran full-back Matthew Scarlett also showed his experience, popping up late in the match with a pair of crucial marks to quash Carlton's desperate final raids.

Following consecutive, gutsy wins over Adelaide, Sydney and St Kilda going into the bye, the narrow defeat - just their second of the season, still fails to hurt the Blues' top four credentials.

Waite led a terrific marking performance by the powerful Carlton with 11 grabs leading from half-forward and two goals while Kade Simpson kicked three.

One came courtesy of some vintage Judd vision in the fourth quarter as the Carlton skipper tried valiantly to rally his charges with a brilliant running goal just minutes earlier despite limping into half-time with a foot injury.

Judd's protege Marc Murphy was also influential with 32 touches, including 17 contested possessions, but said the Blues needed to win those type of games considering their form of late.

"It was such a hectic pace out there. They are a great side, Geelong," he said.

"I don't think we let up at any time. It was a real battle all night and unfortunately we coudln't finish off in the end.

"We had our chances but it's a game of inches. We had a few touched on the line and they kicked a few on the line.

"That was probably the difference in the end."
