Demetriou wishes Cousins well

Updated March 29, 2012 21:54:53

AFL chief executive officer Andrew Demetriou said he hopes Ben Cousins can get his life back on track following the disgraced football star's arrest on a drug charge.

Cousins was arrested at Esperance Airport in Western Australia's south on Tuesday night and has been charged with possession with intent to sell or supply methylamphetamine.

It is alleged the 33-year-old was in possession of 4.56 grams of the drug.

The former football star flew back to Perth on Wednesday night after being released on bail and will face the Perth Magistrates Court on Monday.

A confessed methamphetamine addict, Cousins had been attending a drug rehabilitation clinic in Esperance - called Teen Challenge - for the past month.

Demetriou said the AFL Players' Association in particular continued to offer support to Cousins, along with his clubs and the wider football industry.

"We are all hopeful that he can keep his life on track, as this has been an extremely sad story for him, his family and those close to him," he said.

Cousins, who has had a very public battle with methamphetamine addiction over the years, was one of the most decorated West Coast Eagles players, winning the 2005 Brownlow Medal and playing in their 2006 premiership side, before the club sacked him in late 2007 because of his drug use.

He was suspended for 12 months by the AFL for bringing the game into disrepute before ending his playing career with the Richmond Tigers in 2010.

Cousins in mental health hospital: report

Updated January 15, 2012 06:16:13

Troubled former AFL star Ben Cousins has reportedly been taken to a mental health hospital in Perth.

The West Australian newspaper says it is understood he was admitted to the psychiatric unit for his own safety.

The paper says Cousins was taken yesterday by ambulance to the Joondalup Health Campus mental health unit after a prolonged psychosis related to his battle with drug addiction.

Doctors treating Cousins reportedly committed the 33-year-old after he showed no sign of improvement following more than four days in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Cousins has been in hospital since Monday after he fell and hit his head at a drug rehabilitation clinic.

Cousins was one of the most decorated West Coast Eagles players, winning the 2005 Brownlow Medal and playing in their 2006 premiership side before the club sacked him in late 2007 because of his drug addiction.

He was suspended for 12 months by the AFL for bringing the game into disrepute before ending his playing career with the Richmond Tigers in 2010.

He welcomed his first child, Bobby Ernest Cousins, with partner Maylea Tinecheff in September.

The confessed drug addict is believed to have fallen and hit his head on a wash basin and the floor, suffering injuries to his head and neck.

The 33-year-old was taken on Monday to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

A spokeswoman for the hospital says Cousins will remain there Wednesday night and his condition will be checked on Thursday morning.

Cousins returns to country footy

Posted July 6, 2011 13:22:00

Ben Cousins will make a return to Australian rules when he plays for country Victorian club Romsey this season.

Cousins has signed to play at least one match with the Redbacks, who are top of the ladder in the Riddell District Football League, north of Melbourne.

The club hopes he will play at least two home and away matches and up to four finals.

The Brownlow medallist will play at the earliest in the club's next home match on July 23.

Romsey Football Club vice-president Alan Lever says the town is abuzz with the news.

"The reaction has been phenomenal. Just not only around the club," he said.

"It's about our little town and all that sort of stuff.

"It's abuzz at the moment with everyone talking about it and excited about the day.

"So everyone's asking the same question - what day's it going to be?"
