Maxwell to miss semi-final

Updated September 11, 2012 12:37:00

Collingwood will miss skipper Nick Maxwell for the remainder of its campaign unless the Magpies advance to the grand final after he accepted a two-match ban for rough conduct.

Maxwell would have missed the decider - should Collingwood get that far - had he unsuccessfully challenged the charge at the AFL Tribunal.

Instead he will miss Saturday's semi-final against West Coast at the MCG after taking the early charge, as well as the preliminary final should the Magpies get past the Eagles.

Maxwell was reported for an off-the-ball incident on Hawthorn's Paul Puopolo during Collingwood's 38-point qualifying final defeat.

There was better news for Magpies full-back Chris Tarrant, who is free to play against the Eagles after accepting a reprimand for striking Hawthorn star Lance Franklin.

Hawthorn's Jarryd Roughead also accepted a reprimand and 70.31 carry-over points for engaging in rough conduct against Chris Dawes.

Meanwhile, West Coast forward Quinten Lynch will front the Tribunal tonight in a bid to take on the Magpies in Saturday's do-or-die semi-final showdown.

Maxwell, Lynch facing September suspensions

Updated September 10, 2012 20:58:38

Collingwood and West Coast have been dealt big blows ahead of their semi-final, with Magpies skipper Nick Maxwell and Eagles forward Quinten Lynch facing suspension.

Maxwell will not play again this season unless Collingwood make the grand final if he accepts a two-match ban for rough conduct against Hawthorn's Paul Puopolo.

And the match review panel has slugged Lynch with a one-match ban for charging in his side's win over North Melbourne, which cannot be reduced with an early guilty plea due to his previous poor record.

The Eagles later confirmed they would contest Lynch's charge at the tribunal as he cannot miss more than one match.

The news got worse for West Coast with key defender and vice captain Beau Waters ruled out for the rest of the season with a foot injury that requires surgery.

Meanwhile, Collingwood's Chris Tarrant can accept a reprimand for striking Hawthorn's Lance Franklin.

If Tarrant makes an early guilty plea, he would be be free to play against West Coast in their semi-final at the MCG on Saturday night.

Hawthorn ruck-forward Jarryd Roughead will also be clear to play in the Hawks' preliminary final in a fortnight if he pleads guilty to a rough conduct charge.

That would ensure a reprimand only for his first quarter tangle with Collingwood's Chris Dawes.

North Melbourne veteran Brent Harvey faces a four-match ban from the start of next season over two separate striking incidents.

Harvey was charged with striking West Coast's Daniel Kerr and Adam Selwood.

With North's defeat by West Coast ending their season, Harvey would have to serve any suspension in 2013.

Geelong defender James Kelly is also facing a one-match ban to start 2013 for making forceful front-on contact against Fremantle's Tendai Mzungu in their weekend final.

Collingwood defender Heath Shaw and Hawthorn's Brad Sewell have been hit with wrestling fines, while Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield can accept a $900 fine if he pleads guilty to making negligent contact with an umpire.

All have until lunchtime Tuesday to accept their penalties for fight the matters at the AFL Tribunal.

Pies must move on: Maxwell

Updated May 27, 2012 13:59:08

Captain Nick Maxwell says Collingwood cannot afford to dwell on the misfortune of losing their fourth player to a knee injury.

Defender Lachlan Keefe's suspected season-ending injury has added to the Magpies' extensive injury list.

Nathan Buckley's side clinched its sixth straight win with a 26-point win but the coach was in no mood to celebrate afterwards bemoaning "misfortune and a lot of bad luck."

Maxwell insists the club must look forward and continue to build on a 7-2 record which has the 2010 champions lying fourth in the ladder.

"To be brutally honest, it's disappointing for the player, it's disappointing for the staff but, as a group, we just have to move on," Maxwell said.

Scans on Keefe's right knee are expected to confirm he needs a reconstruction.

The 22-year-old from Gympie fell in a marking contest in Collingwood's 26-point win against Adelaide on Saturday night.

The Magpies have also this year lost Luke Ball, Andrew Krakeour and Brent Macaffer to anterior cruciate ligament tears, nominally 12-month injuries.

Dane Swan, Nathan Brown, Ben Reid and Ben Johnson are also currently on the sidelines.

But Maxwell believes the injured quartet will return ahead of time, saying Collingwood's recruiters targeted quality people.

"They don't feel sorry for themselves and get their head down," he said.

"They get in there and start working as hard as they possibly can.

"I'd say our guys coming back from knees will be quicker than most, just because of their attitudes.

"It's disappointing to lose guys. But again, we have to get on with it - we have got a job to do."

The Magpies came from behind at three-quarter time to post a gritty victory against Adelaide which Maxwell credited to the culture of his club as much as on-field ability.

"Our culture the last three or four years is what really created that never-say-die attitude amongst our group," he said.

"And even when we have got young guys coming through, they buy into that - they feel that, they sense that."

Maxwell supports Wellingham ban

Updated March 22, 2012 17:26:02

Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell says the Magpies needed to come down hard on Sharrod Wellingham to uphold their standards.

Wellingham was suspended by the Collingwood leadership group for the first two rounds of the AFL season after drinking alcohol while injured, then missing a rehabilitation session the next morning.

Coming on top of season-ending injuries to forwards Andrew Krakouer and Brent Macaffer and fitness concerns over Maxwell, Chris Tarrant, Alan Didak and Ben Johnson, Wellingham's indiscretion was the last thing Collingwood needed.

"We've got team rules and standards that we want to uphold and he didn't uphold them," Maxwell said on Thursday.

'We expect more from him as an emerging leader at our football club and someone who is really important to us.

"It's not good timing with the situation we've got with injuries and guys unavailable, but we're willing to make sure that the long-term standards of our club are held up.

"Sharrod understands, he knows what he's done wrong, and he took it on the chin well."

The midfielder will miss Collingwood's matches against Hawthorn and Richmond.

Maxwell was optimistic he would recover from his ankle injury in time for the round-one clash with the Hawks, but was not so confident about some of the Magpies' other casualties.

"I'm expecting to play next week, Taz (Tarrant) is still a good chance of playing, Johnno (Johnson) and Didsy (Didak) will both be touch and go," Maxwell said.

"Probably the fact they haven't had match practice will mean they may have to miss round one, so they will be looking to come in the next week."

Maxwell said the Magpies' preseason misfortunes had made things harder for rookie coach Nathan Buckley.

"It's probably been hard on him, but he's handled it really well, and we've always known that we're focused on round one," he said.

"One good thing that has come out of it, is that we're not peaking right now.

"I think last year we were peaking right at the start of the season, early in the season and we sort of fell away towards the end."

Maxwell, Milburn miss Cats clash

Posted May 13, 2011 19:39:00

Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell and Geelong veteran Darren Milburn are late withdrawals from tonight's AFL blockbuster at the MCG.

Maxwell had been in doubt all week because of a calf muscle injury, while a back problem has sidelined Milburn.

Tyson Goldsack replaces Maxwell for his first senior match since being a member of last year's premiership team.

Allen Christensen will take Milburn's place.

A crowd of at least 70,000 is expected for the clash between the only unbeaten teams so far this season, despite a week of bleak winter conditions.

The persistent rain has forced the closure of most MCG car parks.
