Worsfold dismisses head high drama

Updated May 09, 2012 19:42:35

West Coast coach John Worsfold feels no need to defend his players over their controversial duck-and-shrug tactics, no matter what rival coaches are saying.

"I'm not sure what we have to defend them over," a testy Worsfold said at a press conference in Perth on Wednesday.

"(AFL umpires' boss) Jeff Gieschen said that all the tackles were high."

Still fuming following his side's 25-point loss to the Eagles at Subiaco last weekend, North Melbourne coach Brad Scott spoke to AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson on Wednesday to seek clarification over the issue of West Coast players milking free kicks for high tackles.

The Eagles have won 58 free kicks for high tackles this season, 15 more than next-placed Fremantle. West Coast won the free-kick count 29-15 against the Kangaroos.

West Coast duo Ashton Hams and Luke Shuey have been awarded the most frees for head-high contact in the league this season.

Scott failed to front for his scheduled 10:00am press conference on Wednesday as assistant coach Darren Crocker was quizzed on the coach's absence.

Crocker mistakenly told reporters Scott was having a meeting with Anderson, but a club spokesperson later clarified Scott had been on the phone to Gieschen on Wednesday as Scott continued to argue his case.

"A lot of those free kicks were actually there because ... most of the guys who infringed were our younger players who didn't go low enough and didn't employ the right technique," Crocker conceded.

But he added: "It's the ones where perhaps they just drop at a knee and shrug the shoulders and all of a sudden the tackle becomes high.

"There's a couple of Eagles players who do it very well."

Worsfold brushed aside the growing opposition voiced by rival clubs, including Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson, to his side's tactics.

"(I'm) not mystified because there's a lot of people that have got to keep jobs in footy and they need something to talk about," Worsfold said in an apparent swipe at the media.

"It's not the biggest issue in the game that I've ever dealt with. It's just there.

"I'm happy to listen to it all play out.

"It makes no difference to the way we go about our footy.

"If you feel a hand across your head, you can make it known to the umpire that you're getting hit high."

Worsfold said his players were not receiving instructions on how to milk high free kicks and he denied they were dropping low to make the tackles look dangerous.

"If you can show me some vision of a player who's on his knees, I'd be surprised," Worsfold said.

"We haven't talked about it in the club except for answering questions from outside people about things that we're mystified about.

"It's the Bermuda triangle. Someone will work it out one day."

Worsfold said the fuss over the issue was putting pressure on umpires ahead of Saturday's round-seven clash at Docklands against Essendon.

"I would hope they still pay high tackles, because that's the rules of the game," he said.

Worsfold to evaluate LeCras replacements

Updated February 20, 2012 16:54:09

West Coast coach John Worsfold says he is not any closer to deciding on a replacement for injured star Mark LeCras after several potential replacements impressed in Sunday's preseason wins over rivals Fremantle and Essendon.

Former Bulldogs forward Josh Hill was the early favourite to take LeCras' spot after the 2010 club champion suffered a season-ending knee injury last week.

But impressive displays from Ashton Hams and Gerrick Weedon in West Coast's 21-point win over Essendon on Sunday have thrown the door wide open.

Hams and Weedon booted two goals apiece against the Bombers, while Weedon popped up for another goal in the Eagles' 20-point win over the Dockers.

And with 169cm Ryan Neates finally fit and eager to enter the selection frame, Worsfold said it would probably take him the entire preseason campaign before deciding on a replacement.

"We're lucky enough to have a lot of options," he said.

"Neates looked really sharp when he came on.

"Josh Hill - I was really impressed with his game.

"I thought (Weedon and Hams) both contributed really well.

"There's no doubt they're both physically more prepared to play at the elite level than they have been before.

"So just looking at some of those guys that can potentially fill that role - they've all got another month of training to put their hand up."

Weedon played just one game last season - as a sub against Essendon - but appears to have bulked up over the summer.

"He can play at the intensity of AFL football for longer periods than he has been able to do in the past," Worsfold said of the 20-year-old.

"We know he's got massive strength and explosiveness but he hasn't been able to maintain it.

"Backing up with a really strong preseason means he's ready to step up to that mark."

Although Worsfold said he had not taken any notice of some experts writing off the Eagles' flag chances following LeCras' injury, not everyone in the Worsfold clan has been able to brush it off.

"It got in my daughter's craw a little bit but, as a 15-year-old, I can understand maybe her being influenced by that," Worsfold said.

"But for our players, we understand. We had players injured last year - Ryan Neates - and we feel all the same for those players, regardless of who it is."

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon said he was impressed with the performance of 18-year-old Dockers forward Lachie Neale, who booted two goals against the Bombers before fading against West Coast.

"I suppose we've been a little bit bullish about him but ... he's just put another step in the right direction," he said.

Defenders Luke McPharlin, Antoni Grover and Alex Silvagni are tipped to return against Richmond in a fortnight, while Nick Lower and Kepler Bradley are also a chance.

Worsfold content to wait on deal

Posted May 25, 2011 14:00:00

West Coast coach John Worsfold insists he is still content to wait until the end of the AFL season before nutting out a new contract.

Worsfold is out of contract at the end of the year and Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett has declared the club will wait until the end of the season before discussing the prospect of a contract extension for the 2006 premiership coach.

But those comments were made a little over two weeks ago, before West Coast followed up an impressive win over Fremantle with a crushing 123-point triumph over the Western Bulldogs.

The Eagles (5-3) are just two points adrift of fourth spot and are fast becoming one of the most feared teams in the competition, but Worsfold said on Wednesday he had not given any more thought to his contract situation.

"I'm more than comfortable with the club's position and my position," Worsfold said ahead of Sunday's clash with Collingwood at the MCG.

"It was mutual that 'let's get through the season before we make any decision about what's the best way forward for the team and the club'.

"I would love to see this group win a premiership. I would be very proud of them winning a premiership and I'd love to be part of that.

"But all that will be (decided) at the end of the season when you actually can have a clear head and sit down and think about it."

Should the Eagles continue to play anywhere close to their current form, Worsfold is almost certain to earn a contract extension if he chooses to continue coaching beyond this year.

And with the fledgling group showing so much promise, it's hard to see Worsfold walking away despite the heat placed on his future during last year's wooden spoon campaign.

Eagles to wait on Worsfold contract

Posted May 9, 2011 13:30:00

West Coast will put contract negotiations with coach John Worsfold on hold until the end of the season.

Worsfold, who is out of contract at the end of the season, started the year under immense pressure to produce results after last year's wooden spoon campaign.

The Eagles have shown drastic improvement this year and sit 10th on the table with a 3-3 win-loss record ahead of Sunday's Derby against Fremantle.

But despite the on-field improvement, Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett says a decision on Worsfold's future will not be made until the end of the campaign.

"John's aware of his position, it will happen at the end of the year," Nisbett said.

"John's working with the players to ensure we get the best performance week in, week out and to date we've been extremely competitive.

"It makes John's position a little easier because he's seeing good performances from the players he believes in.

"We're three and three so we've got a lot of work to do yet. But our performances have been much better."
