Match review panel may target Lynch

Updated September 10, 2012 10:27:58

A clumsy spoil will put West Coast forward Quinten Lynch in the sights of the AFL match review panel who will hand down its verdict on the weekend's games today.

The Eagles, Hawthorn and Collingwood will all sweat on the panel findings, with Magpies captain Nick Maxwell already on report for rough conduct.

Lynch collected Scott McMahon with a knee to the back as the North Melbourne defender went for a mark in the first quarter of the Eagles' big elimination final win on Sunday.

Kangaroos veteran Brent Harvey also faces a late start to next season after he collected Eagles midfielder Daniel Kerr with a high forearm just before three-quarter time.

But it is Friday night's rugged qualifying final between the Hawks and Magpies that will keep the panel most busy.

St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt joined Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley in supporting Maxwell for his incident, which left Hawthorn forward Paul Puopolo with a bloodied nose.

Puopolo turned around and pointed angrily at Maxwell as trainers led him from the field for treatment.

Buckley said Maxwell was only trying to block Puopolo as the ball was kicked into Hawthorn's attack and noted his captain was much taller than the Hawthorn player.

Sitting beside Maxwell at Channel Seven's Game Day program on Sunday morning, Riewoldt said similar incidents happened many times during matches.

But the incident was caught on video and the fact that contact was undoubtedly high could count against Maxwell.

The Collingwood captain has no carryover points or relevant tribunal record, which will count in his favour if the panel decide to charge him.

The same applies to Hawks ruck-forward Jarryd Roughead, who bumped Chris Dawes well off the ball in the first term of the match.

Down-the-ground footage showed the incident clearly and Dawes briefly went to ground after the contact, although he played out the match.

It is similar to the incident that forced Geelong star Steve Johnson out of Saturday night's elimination final loss to Fremantle with a one-game ban.

Magpies key defender Chris Tarrant might escape a charge for his blow to Lance Franklin's midriff early in the match.

The only other charge so far from the weekend's finals was a rough conduct report on Geelong midfielder James Kelly against Tendai Mzungu.

Kelly, like Harvey, will probably carry a suspension into the start of next season.

North boss quits after board review

Updated June 05, 2012 17:05:55

North Melbourne chief executive Eugene Arocca has quit the AFL club after reports of a rift between himself and board members.

Arocca handed in his resignation, effective immediately, saying his position had become untenable.

"As a result of matters beyond my control, I have handed in my resignation to James Brayshaw effective immediately," he said in a statement.

"I will remain a proud and passionate member of the North Melbourne Football Club and will fondly remember my time as CEO.

"I want to thank my loyal staff for their incredible hard work and support and I want to pass on my best wishes to the playing group, Board and football department for a successful future.

"I would also like to acknowledge our amazing supporters and urge them to continue to back the club in and get right behind the mighty royal blue and white.

"North Melbourne has been a big part of my life for the past five years and I hope to remain part of the Kangaroo family for a long time to come.

Kangaroos president James Brayshaw said the board had met last month to set in place a process to decide whether Arocca should continue in the job beyond the expiry of his contract in October, or be replaced.

But he denied that Arocca had delivered an ultimatum over the timing of the decision or that he had a personal feud with the chief executive.

"It was decided we needed to embark on a process of either re-signing Eugene or beginning to search for whoever might replace him," Brayshaw told reporters.

"It's just proper board behaviour. It had begun, it was ongoing, he knew everything about it, there was no cloak and dagger about it."

Brayshaw said suggestions of rifts between Arocca and himself or between Arocca and the club's football manager Donald McDonald were untrue, although he admitted there had been friction at times.

"In footy clubs, regularly you get times when people don't see eye to eye, it's a robust environment," Brayshaw said.

"I think Donald and Eugene have great respect for each other.

"I'd be lying if I said they always see eye to eye, the same way I'd be lying if I said Eugene and I always saw eye to eye.

"You don't, it's a brutal industry and there are times when you need to have brutal and frank discussions with people."

Brayshaw said Arocca's "street fighter" nature had caused him to butt heads with other club figures at times, but was also part of what had made him good at his job.

He said Arocca had achieved a lot in his five years, notably spearheading the creation of the club's $15 million training and administration facility, helping transferring club control to the members and increasing revenue.

Chief operating officer Cam Vale will be acting chief executive, with Brayshaw expecting it to take two or three months to find a permanent replacement.

Brayshaw said Arocca had been asked whether he wanted to front Tuesday's media conference, but declined.

OPI calls for review of Milne rape allegations

Stephanie March

Updated May 03, 2012 11:01:18

The Office of Police Integrity (OPI) has recommended the evidence from a rape allegation against St Kilda footballer Stephen Milne be re-examined.

Milne was facing allegations in 2004 that he raped a woman at the home of team-mate Leigh Montagna after a club family day.

He was never charged.

In 2010, two former detectives said they had been pressured by members within the police force to drop the case against Milne.

One former detective said during the investigation that evidence went missing from his desk and the victim's statement was leaked to the club.

An investigation by the OPI has found concerns about interference were reasonable and the report recommends the evidence be reviewed.

The report also made a number of findings about shortcomings in the local management and oversight of the investigation.

In a statement, Victoria Police says the OPI concluded there was no specific evidence of "actual interference" found.

The force also said it had implemented substantial reforms and improvements to its sex crimes investigative processes since 2004, which they are confident would overcome these issues if repeated today.

Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton told Fairfax Radio the file will be reviewed but it is unlikely the case will be reopened.

"From what I have been told there is no new evidence or new information at all, that suggest the case be reopened," he said.

"It is more a case that the file is incomplete, things aren't referred to properly, exhibits aren't recorded properly."

Demetriou happy with video review

Updated April 02, 2012 14:15:59

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou has given the thumbs up to the video review system after the opening round of the season.

Demetriou said the league's operations manager Adrian Anderson told him the officials made the correct call on each of the five goal line referrals made during round one.

"There's always going to be an inconclusive one," he said.

"If there was four they got right and one inconclusive one, that's an 80 per cent improvement on last year because we would have had five last year that would have still been inconclusive because we didn't have the video review.

"We've always said this isn't going to get everything right. But if it gets more right than it gets wrong then it's got to be better than we've had in the past.

"So far, so good. It hasn't interrupted the continuity of the game."

Demetriou rejected North Melbourne coach Brad Scott's call for umpires to no longer report players and leave the issue in the hands of the match review panel.

"It's very important umpires continue to lay reports on match day, otherwise it will usurp their authority on the field," Demetriou said.

"And we can't have that, they are the authorities on the ground."

St Marys wants AFL review of blanket footy bans

By Jano Gibson

Updated January 24, 2012 18:17:06

St Marys Northern Territory Football League club will ask the AFL to review a rule that almost brought the career of one of its stars to an end.

Three time AFL premiership player Darryl White was facing a life ban after being suspended for more than the maximum 15 weeks over the course of his career.

White successfully challenged the ban and will be free to play in this weekend's NTFL game against Southern Districts.

But club president Shaun Hardy says the 15-week rule should take into account how long a player has been involved in the game.

"We think that the intent of the policy is very clear and unquestionable," he said.

"However, not taking into account the number of games played and not taking into account the nature of offences needs to be looked at.

"In our submission, we put forward exceptional circumstances in Darryl's case.

"This should not be seen as a blanket submission that covers every case."

White has played more than 900 games with AFL-affiliated clubs over his long career.

Country football review recommends merger

Peter Lenaghan

Updated October 14, 2011 14:30:26

A review of football in country Victoria has recommended big changes to the way the sport is governed.

The AFL ordered the report by AFL Victoria's chairman Peter Jackson earlier this year.

His 25 recommendations include merging AFL Victoria and the Victorian Country Football League and establishing independent regional commissions.

Mr Jackson says the proposal should not been seen as a takeover, but a chance to free up resources and increase the role of country Victorians in decision-making.

The report also includes calls to boost country football funding by $750,000 and recommendations to address a looming shortage of umpires and volunteers.

Mr Jackson says the proposals are designed to help the state's 700 country football clubs.

"The current governance structure overall is just too costly, whether you look at league structures, umpire associations or head office," he said.

"So we've got to look at the best interests of the club, and that's what the recommendation's based on."

Mr Jackson says the changes should be made in time for the 2013 season.

Country footy under review as VCFL boss quits

Updated May 18, 2011 08:18:00

The AFL has ordered a review of country football in Victoria after the sudden departure of the Victorian Country Football League's (VCFL) chief executive.

Glenn Scott has resigned after nine years in the role and will be replaced by the former central Victorian footballer, Stephen Reaper.

The AFL's chief executive, Andrew Demetriou, issued a strongly worded statement yesterday, saying he was alarmed by Mr Scott's departure and disappointed that country football was losing someone of his calibre and experience.

Mr Demetriou has criticised the VCFL's board, saying he is disappointed with the process and the outcome.

He also stated the review is needed to ensure everyone can work together.

VCFL chairman Nicholas Rolfe has denied that there were tensions between Mr Scott and the board and says it was a positive working relationship.

The review's terms of reference are due to be decided next week.

Sudden AFL review into VCFL

The sudden departure of country football's top administrator has triggered a review into the governance of the game in regional Victoria.

The AFL announced a inquiry into the structure of the sport following the surprise departure of long-serving chief executive officer of the Victorian Country Football League Glenn Scott on Monday afternoon.

AFL chief executive officer Andrew Demetriou released a statement on Tuesday saying he was "alarmed" to learn that Mr Scott, who he called "one of football's most effective and respected administrators", had resigned after nine years in the position.

VCFL president Nicholas Rolfe was notified hours before the announcement of a review which will be led by AFL Victoria chairman and former chief executive of the Essendon Football Club, Peter Jackson.

Mr Jackson has echoed Mr Demetriou's concerns about the sudden departure of Mr Scott.

"On behalf of the AFL we're all pretty disappointed that we lose a guy like this, and perhaps in such a sudden way as well and we'd like to understand a bit more about it," Mr Jackson said.

"We thought consultation would be a fair enough request."

Mr Jackson said the inquiry was not centred on the departure of Mr Scott but admitted it was a catalyst which has led to an "overdue review."

"It's not a review into Glenn Scott's resignation or the factor's causing that, it's actually a review into the structure and what's the best structure for football in country Victoria."

Mr Jackson said he could not comment on speculation of ongoing tension between Mr Scott and VCFL's board of directors.

The VCFL announced Steven Reaper had been appointed to the succeed Mr Scott at the same time it announced his resignation.

Mr Rolfe denied any tensions between Mr Scott and the VCFL but would not comment into the circumstances surround his resignation on Monday afternoon.

"Ordinarily in the past we have not discussed staff issues with AFL Victoria and as president I was unaware that we were required to do that," Mr Rolfe said.

"We would be looking at achieving a positive result out of this, as Peter (Jackson) seems to be putting a positive spin, I would be putting a positive spin on it as well and if you read the press release from Andrew (Demetriou) it talks very positively about country football and in one view that it's never been in a better condition."

Mr Jackson said he planned to organise a meeting between with "key country football stakeholders" in the coming weeks.

Mr Scott did not return calls from the ABC on Tuesday.

1. The World's Unbeatable Sports Betting System- This is the where people normally ask if this is a Sports Betting Champ scam. A 97% win rate system? But, the 97% win rate is on bets made, not on games played. True this system is one that is best utilized by a person with a bankroll to back them up. But, it is surprisingly easy to use.

The system determines certain low risk bets, which can be predicted well ahead of time. That translates to only betting about 40% of the time. Approximately, 120 games out of the year between the two seasons. It uses a form of martingale wagering, applied to a three game series. Based on the premise that the team bet is sure to win one out of three games. Once your team wins one in the series, your done betting that series. This system also comes with a 67% win rate NFL system, and lifetime of free picks, well worth the $197 price tag!

Scarlett, Mitchell under review

Posted April 26, 2011 20:19:00

Geelong defender Matthew Scarlett's 250th-game celebrations could end on a sour note following a heavy clash with Hawthorn's Jordan Lewis.

Scarlett crashed into Lewis during a marking contest in the final quarter of Tuesday's AFL match at the MCG, where the Cats steadied to win an enthralling contest by 19 points in front of 78,579 fans.

Geelong are second on the ladder with a 5-0 start to the season but face a nervous wait over Scarlett's clash with Lewis, who left the field dazed and requiring medical attention for a head wound but was quickly back in action.

The AFL's Match Review Panel is also sure to scrutinise an incident in the first quarter of Tuesday's match as Hawks midfield star Sam Mitchell appeared to bump Geelong's Steve Johnson around the head region.

Injuries could also take a toll on both sides in the coming weeks. Hawthorn small forward Cyril Rioli added to his history of hamstring injuries and ended the game sitting on the bench with an ice-pack on his thigh.

Geelong's Taylor Hunt limped off in the opening term of Tuesday's game with medial-ligament damage to his knee and could be out for four weeks, coach Chris Scott says.

Scarlett said he was confident he had done nothing wrong in the clash with Lewis.

"I watched the replay and I got the ball. I had no intent (to injure)," Scarlett said.

"Hopefully the right decision gets made.

"The replay shows pretty clearly that I hit the ball."

Both sides have the bye next weekend.

Scarlett says the Cats are looking forward to taking on Collingwood in round eight on May 13 at the MCG, although they must first negotiate bottom side North Melbourne at Kardinia Park on May 7.

"We're going alright but we're not setting the world on fire," he said.

"We know we've got to improve enormously so we're just working hard and trying to catch the benchmark of the competition which is Collingwood."

Sporting a black eye, Scarlett says he's appreciating his role as a spare-parts man behind key defenders Harry Taylor and Tom Lonergan.

"Both of those guys are developing really well and it sort of allows me to play on smalls and talls and help the side wherever I'm needed," Scarlett said after collecting 29 possessions.

He said Taylor was "probably the best mark that I've ever played with" and a future club captain.

Scarlett was buoyed by the birth of his twin sons Harry and Oliver to wife Milla.

"I picked them up from hospital yesterday. I've just had a great week," the 31-year-old said.
