Hayes has heart surgery

St Kilda has announced that star Lenny Hayes has had surgery to correct a heart condition diagnosed at the start of the season.

Hayes, who played all 22 rounds for the year - including his 250th AFL game in round nine against Sydney - completed his season a week ago in the Saints' win over Carlton.

"Lenny's condition was successfully corrected during surgery in Melbourne last week and he is expected to make a full recovery ahead of pre-season training commencing in November", St Kilda head of football Chris Pelchen said in a statement.

The club said Hayes would complete a prescribed rehabilitation period that allows him to return to preseason training and continue to play for the Saints in 2013.

McIntosh to undergo LARS surgery

North Melbourne ruckman Hamish McIntosh's season is over after he opted to undergo specialist surgery on his knee.

McIntosh is hopeful of achieving full stability in his troublesome knee for the first time in four years after deciding on LARS surgery.

The 27-year-old will have a synthetic graft inserted to replace the posterior cruciate ligament that has been missing in his right knee.

He is scheduled to have surgery on Thursday and start his rehabilitation in a month.

"I'm really confident this is the best path for me and I want to ensure that I can stabilise my knee and be right to go for day one of the pre-season," McIntosh told kangaroosfc.com.au.

"This is in the best interests of my long-term playing future and will allow me to have my second full preseason in a row."

McIntosh had operations on both achilles tendons last year and played the opening seven games this season.

He injured his knee during the victory over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in round seven.

He had surgery on the knee in June but pulled up sore after making his comeback in a VFL match two weeks ago.

Injury has restricted him to eight games in two years.

"It's been a frustrating couple of years. Both my achilles tendons are great, allowing me to play the first seven games this year, and this was just an unfortunate injury," he said.

Shoulder surgery rules Fyfe out for months

Fremantle says midfielder Nat Fyfe will miss up to 12 weeks after he goes under the knife to correct a shoulder injury.

Fyfe dislocated his shoulder in round three and was a late withdrawal from the Dockers side that faced St Kilda in round four, but returned to the team to take on Carlton last Friday night.

However the 20-year-old aggravated the injury at training on Tuesday and will now undergo surgery.

Dockers coach Ross Lyon had previously said that the injury reappeared on Fyfe's radar, the club would have no hesitation in booking him for surgery.

Fremantle general manager of football operations Chris Bond said in a statement that the Melbourne specialist whom Fyfe consulted last month would perform the surgery.

"We believe that the appropriate course of action for Nat's long-term playing future and his general well being is to have the operation at this time," he said.

"Based on the advice of our medical team, we envisage that Nat will require a recovery and rehabilitation period of about 12 weeks, which would make him available for selection in the latter part of the season."

Stynes recovering after brain surgery

Jim Stynes' surgeon is "ecstatic" after the AFL great underwent another operation on Thursday to remove a brain tumour.

The Melbourne president and 1990 Brownlow Medallist said earlier this week he had been "written off", but a new treatment had given him an unexpected boost.

Stynes has been battling cancer for two years and this latest operation appears to have been a success.

"Jim has just come out of surgery for the removal of a brain tumour and is in recovery," a Facebook post announced.

"Professor (Jeffrey) Rosenfeld who performed the surgery is ecstatic, saying they got a big removal/clearance rate on the tumour without any damage.

"All in all, (it) looks like a big success.

"Sam (Stynes' wife) is by his side as usual.

"Thanks to everyone for your well wishes and prayers. We all love you big guy."

Stynes looked tired and drawn on Monday when he presented his famous number 11 guernsey to new Melbourne recruit Mitch Clark.

But he was in typical good spirits and said new medication had been an unexpected boost for his health.

"I was sort of written off there not too long ago and now I've been given another crack," Stynes said.

"The doctors saw something they didn't see a few weeks ago, so they got some more medicine that will keep me going for a little bit more.

"They started something new and then they didn't think that was going to work and now they think it might.

"One of the tumours has halved in size, and that was unexpected. That was a real surprise."

The success with the medication led to Stynes undergoing Thursday's operation.
