AFL Preview: Round 8

Round 8 is a tough round for tipsters with plenty of matches that could go either way and a couple of possible upsets.

The weekend kicks off with a blockbuster between the two unbeaten teams in the league.

It's Geelong and Collingwood at the MCG in Friday night footy, and with both teams rarely tested all season it is shaping up as a tight and tough encounter.

Saturday afternoon in Victoria, Melbourne and North Melbourne meet at Docklands.

The Dees are coming off a stunning win over the Crows but have key players in Jamar, Grimes and Trengove missing, while North will be desperate to get back on the winners list for the first time since Round 2.

Adelaide slinked back in to town after a humiliating 96 point loss in Round 7 and their fans are demanding a better showing when they take on the Gold Coast Suns at Footy Park on Saturday afternoon.

It should be an easy win for the Crows, but the Suns have a perfect record at Footy Park and are coming off a impressive win against their cross town rivals last week.

Saturday night the high flying Bombers head to the Gabba to take on Brisbane.

Essendon are sitting in the top 4 and looking good for finals actions, while the Lions are firmly entrenched at the bottom of the ladder and already look to be rebuilding for next year.

At the SCG the Power will be searching for their first win in Sydney since 2006 and after a just their second win of 2011.

But they come up against a Sydney team that keep surprising and are shaping up as a serious final contender in their first season under John Longmire.

Sunday, Hawthorn host the struggling Saints at the MCG in the early game.

The Hawks continue to impress and with Franklin finding form they look a formidable team once again and should be too good for St Kilda.

After being positioned near the top of the ladder in recent years and a team that is feared, the Saints have struggled all season and with just 1 win and 1 draw to date they are quickly running out of time, so a win is crucial for the season.

The toughest match to pick for the round would have to be the game between the Bulldogs and the Tigers at Docklands.

Richmond are on a three game winning streak and starting to believe in themselves, while the Bulldogs haven't managed to yet re-capture their form of recent years.

Either team could claim to be favourites for this game but in Riewoldt fires for the Tigers they may have too much scoring power for the Dogs.

The final match of the round is the "Derby" with West Coast hosting Fremantle.

The Eagles are a much improved team in 2011 and will be confident of claiming their first Derby win in 7 starts, while the Dockers will be determined to win and prove last week's big loss in Melbourne was not a sign of things to come.
