Gay footballer calls for AFL 'pride round'

Updated September 10, 2012 08:52:05

A new campaign has been launched calling on the AFL to host a 'pride round' to support gay footballers.

Victorian country footballer Jason Ball has launched an online petition calling on the AFL to run a national anti-homophobia television campaign during the grand final.

Ball is an openly gay footballer who is also preparing for his team's grand final in the Yarra Valley Mountain District league next Sunday.

He says homophobia is rife in the AFL and it is time the league showed the kind of support for gay footballers that his team-mates have shown to him.

"What we need to see is something really substantial from the AFL. I think gay players and gay supporters really need to know that the AFL has got their back," he said.

"What we're trying to do is see if the AFL will play the 'No to Homophobia' campaign on the big screen at the grand final or even commit to a pride round just like they have for Indigenous rounds and multicultural rounds."

Ball says homophobia remains a serious problem in society, but is especially prevalent in football.

"Gay slurs are a regular part of the language of many clubs. That's sort of part of the culture, it's a very blokey culture," he said.

"It's no wonder to me that no senior professional AFL footballers have come out of the closet yet, but I think the clubs are ready for change, I think the players are ready for change.

"We just need the AFL to get on board and really lead that change."

Beyond Blue chairman and former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett is supporting the campaign.

Beyond Blue chief Kate Carnell says the AFL needs to step up its fight against homophobia.

"Discrimination is linked significantly to depression and anxiety and even in some cases suicide, so it is essential that the AFL comes out and is supportive of its players who are gay," she said.

"There must be a large number, just based on statistics, and at the moment they are not comfortable to come out and declare their sexuality and that's simply not good enough."

The AFL has issued a press release saying it supports anti-homophobia campaigns, but it has stopped short of explicitly backing calls for a pride round.

Sinclair gets round 11 Rising Star nod

Updated June 12, 2012 08:56:54

Collingwood small forward Ben Sinclair has won the AFL's round 11 Rising Star nomination after a sterling performance against the Demons on Monday.

Sinclair grabbed five marks, 12 possessions and booted home three majors in the Magpies' 42-point win over Melbourne in the Queen's Birthday match at the MCG.

The 20-year-old has played every game this year after succumbing to a fractured leg in early 2011 which delayed his debut AFL appearance until Round 19 in a season where Collingwood finished as grand-final runners-up to Geelong.

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley has lauded Sinclair's consistency.

"In the first half of this year Ben has consistently been impacting on games for us," Buckley said.

"His contested footy, his pressure on the opposition and his ability to regularly get on the scoreboard have become really valuable and important to our flexibility.

"Right now he's one of our first picked, certainly one of the first picked of our small forwards."

Veterans to miss round one: Sheedy

Updated March 14, 2012 22:46:05

Sheedy suggested on Wednesday the Giants were likely to be missing up to five or six players for the Olympic stadium encounter on March 24.

Among the absentees will be midfielder Luke Power (hamstring), ruckman Dean Brogan (hamstring) and forward Setanta O'hAilpin (cork).

Sheedy was already resigned to taking on the Swans without the club's number draft pick Jonathan Patton, who underwent knee surgery in Sweden.

The Giants' coach said he was pretty close to finalising his preferred 22 for the match against Sydney.

He suggested GWS would field its strongest available squad for their final preseason hitout against Richmond in Canberra on Saturday.

"The best ones we can put out there," Sheedy said.

"We will not have our best team out there, but it's always hard to organise your best team to be running out there week in, week out."

Another veteran Chad Cornes is set to go for round one, but the former Port Adelaide star is not thinking about playing beyond this year.

"I'm still rapt for the opportunity to be here this year. The body is feeling pretty good at this stage," Cornes told reporters.

Sheedy reiterated rugby league convert Israel Folau would definitely be part of the side to face the Swans and was continuing to improve.

"He got the ball a few more times last week and we played him in the ruck more and he's starting to learn to read the game up the field," Sheedy said.

Looking ahead to the first-round clash with Sydney, Sheedy said he was still to decide who would get the difficult matchup on Swans' champion Adam Goodes.

With its Blacktown facility unavailable as it's being prepared for Sydney's clash with Gold Coast on Saturday, GWS trained on Wednesday at Lakeside Oval, next to the SCG and frequently used by the Swans.

Sydney coach John Longmire chatted with Sheedy before the session and then, together with some of his assistants, watched from a respectful distance at the opposite end of the ground.

"The Swans guys are there watching so we won't give too much away," Cornes said.

While he can get around western Sydney with relative anonymity, Cornes is finding another aspect of the harbour city less enjoyable.

"It takes two hours to get anywhere here. In Adelaide, it's 10 minutes max," Cornes said.

AFL Wrap - Round 16

Collingwood have moved to the top of the ladder after round 16 of the AFL, overtaking Geelong following the Cats second loss in a row.

Geelong went down narrowly to West Coast at Subiaco, with inaccuracy in front of goal in the final term hindering any late comeback from the Cats.

But the win by the Eagles was full of merit and they are pushing for a crucial top 4 spot.

With 7 weeks remaining in the season, West Coast appears to be a team that could cause a headache to some more fancied teams come finals time if they can grab a home final.

Hawthorn won their 11th game of the year with a clinical victory over Brisbane at York Park in cold and windy conditions.

It wasn't flashy, but the Hawks got the job done and they remain in 3rd spot on the ladder, half a game clear of fourth placed Carlton.

But the best news for the club was that they got through the match with no injuries, a nice change from recent weeks that have seen their big man stocks decimated.

Saturday night the Bombers stormed to their second straight win with a 39 point win over Richmond.

Essendon was looking in trouble early in the third terms when they trailed by 22 points, but they piled on 10 unanswered goal to finish the match in style.

It was an impressive turnaround and they hang on to 8th spot on the ladder, while the Tigers appear to be out of the running for finals after sinking to 13th spot and two clear games outside the 8.

Sydney got back on the winners list with an easy win over the Suns on the Gold Coast.

A 5 goal to 1 opening term set the Swans on their way, with the 70 point margin a nice percentage booster as they look towards September.

The Suns continue to struggle against the top teams and managed just 4 goals for the match, and they will have an anxious wait this week after Gary Ablett limped off with a knee injury.

Sunday saw the Collingwood machine crank into gear and dismantle North Melbourne, leading to a massive 117 point win by the Pies.

It was the biggest ever win by Collingwood over the Roos, and with some of their key players like Swan and Jolly running back into top form, they are clearly the best team in the competition.

The win moved the Pies back into top spot on the ladder, equal on points with the Cats but with 1 game and nearly 45 percentage points in hand.

All things being equal, with 7 weeks to go the minor premiership appears to be Collingwood's to lose.

St Kilda continued their charge at a finals spot with a 56 point win over Port Adelaide at Football Park.

Nick Riewoldt kicked a goal just 10 secs into the match and from there the Saints were never headed, easily taking the four points and moving to within one game of 8th place.

Port Adelaide disastrous season continued, with the Power losing their 13th game in 15 matches and they are only ahead of the Suns and out of the wooden spoon position on percentage.

The Western Bulldogs are another team making a late run at the finals, and they are now half game outside the 8 following an upset win over Carlton at Docklands.

The Blues led narrowly at the main break, but a Hooper goal early in third quarter saw the Dogs take the lead and they were never headed, going on to win by 27 points.

The Blues recent roller coaster form has continued, with the loss following on from a huge win last week, and they are now in danger of slipping out of the prized top 4 spot next week with a match against Collingwood on the agenda in Round 17.

AFL Preview: Round 16

Seven games in five states games this weekend take place in Round 16 of the AFL, with three teams resting with the bye.

West Coast play one of their most important matches of the season when they host Geelong in Friday night footy.

The Cats are coming off a shock loss against the Bombers last week, their first for the year, and they face the tough task of heading across the country to take on an Eagles team vying for a top 4 spot.

For West Coast a home final is up for grabs if they can maintain their fine form, while the Cats will be keen to show that last week's loss was just a minor hiccup on the road to another flag.

Brisbane head from the warmth of Queensland to the freezing cold of Launceston to play Hawthorn at York Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks have an impressive record at the second home and they should have no real trouble accounting for the Lions, who have just three wins for the year.

Gold Coast host the Swans for the first time, with Sydney desperate to break a three game losing streak.

Sydney were looking good for a top 4 spot just 1 month ago, but losses to Carlton, Collingwood and Adelaide have seem them slip to 7th, and a loss could see them drop out of the top 8 by the end of the round.

Essendon and Richmond meet at the MCG in front of what should be a massive crowd.

The Bombers finally got back on the winner list last week after a run of 5 losses, and what a win it was.

The 4 point defeat of Geelong has revived their finals hopes, while the Tigers were thrashed by Carlton to the tune of 103 points and as a consequence slipped to 13th on the ladder.

There is a lot at stake in this match, with Richmond needing to win to stay in touch with the pack chasing the final few spots in the top 8.

Collingwood can move to top spot of the AFL ladder with a win over North Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The Pies are slowly gearing up for September with key players rested and the team starting to find the form that engineered their premiership last year.

For North Melbourne, a 4 game winning streak was halted last round by a loss to St Kilda, but they still remain in the hunt for the top 8, just half a game behind 8th placed Essendon.

St Kilda head to Footy Park to take on a Port Adelaide team that has slipped to second last on the ladder.

It is a dangerous match for the Saints, who have a poor record against the Power, but they must overcome that record if they are to continue their last season push for the finals.

5 wins out of the past 6 has seen St Kilda move to within a game of the top 8, but with games against Collingwood, Carlton, Sydney and Fremantle still to come, a win over the 16th ranked team is a must.

The Power, on the other hand, are playing for little more than pride, and with Chad Cornes looking likely to finally win a recall to the team despite not being in their plans for next year, it marks the start of farewell tour of a few of the stalwarts of the Power team.

The final match of the round between Carlton and the Western Bulldogs is a crucial one for both teams, with the Blues looking to consolidate a top 4 spot, while the Bulldogs are still striving for a top 8 position.

The Western Bulldogs have won their past three, put have yet to win this season over a team in the top 8, so to defeat Carlton will give the team confidence they can play finals for the 4th straight year.

The Blues are looking much more secure, sitting in third spot with 10 wins for the year, and they were impressive last week in their big win over the Tigers.

With Judd and Murphy continuing to lead the way Carlton look certain to finish in the top 4 and get the double chance come finals time, something that has be shown to be crucial if you want to win the premiership.

AFL Wrap: Round 13

An massive upset, a favourite flexing their muscles and a couple of giants starting to awaken were the results of a fascinating Round 15 of the AFL.

The Western Bulldogs continued their late run at a finals sport when they hammered a disappointing Melbourne team in the opening match of the round.

The 64 points victory by the Dogs saw them move to withing two points of 8th spotm while the Dees slip out of the late as their inconsistant season continued.

On Saturday afternoon Carlton responded to their loss in Round 14 in the perfect way, thrashing the Tigers by 103 points at the MCG.

Carlton kicked the opening goal just 28 secs into the opening quarter and were never in trouble, kicking 28 goals for the match.

Judd was once again a standout for the Blues, kicking 2 goals and collecting 31 touches, while Eddie Betts kicked 5 majors and Walker 4.

It was an embarressing performance by Richmond, who kicked 4 of the last 5 goals of the game to make the margin seem better than it actually was, and once again they run the risk of missing finals action despite being in touch midway through the year.

At Subiaco the Dockers over ran a plucky Gold Coast side to record a 50 point win.

In Matthew Pavlich's 250th game, Fremantle kicked 10 goals to 2 after half time to run away from an injury ravanged Suns team.

On Saturday night Essendon caused one of the upsets of the year, defeating the unbeaten Cats by 4 points at teh MCG.

The Bombers had lost their last 5 games and were given no realistic chance of taking the points, but they withstood a late Geelong charge to take a memorable win.

Across at Football Park, the Crows also broke a long losing streak, defeating the Swans by 7 points in wet and wild conditions.

Adelaide had lost 6 straight but they were on the mark early and stuck with Sydney when they threatened to take control of the match.

In the end inaccuracy from the Swans and great desperation from the Crows was enough to give the home team their 4th win of the year.

On Sunday Brisbane and Port Adelaide, two former powerhouse teams, did battle at the Gabba in a bid to avoid the possibility of claiming the wooden spoon.

It was a close contest throughout the day before the Lions kicked the last 5 goals of the game to record an 11 point win and jump up to 15th on the ladder.

Collingwood and Hawthorn played off in the match of the round at the MCG in front of a massive crowd, with the Pies showing they are a class above the Hawks at this stage of the year.

Collingwood held Hawthorn goal less in teh opening term and were always in control of the match, going on to win by 41 points.

The Hawks were gallant in defeat but their injury struck side was no match for the defending premiers, who now sit 4 points behind Geelong but with a game in hand and superior percentage.

The final match of the weekend saw the Saints continue their charge at the finals with an impressive 11 point win over the Kangaroos.

North went into the match with 4 straight wins and led by 10 points mid way through the seond term, before the Saints clicked into gear and booted the next 6 goals to take control of the contest.

The win moves St Kilda to within 4 points of 8th placed Essendon, but it will still be a tough ask to grab a final spot with six teams within 1 game of 8th spot on the ladder.

AFL Preview: Round 14

Round 14 of the AFL kicks off with Hawthorn and Essendon meeting at the MCG on Friday night.

The Hawks are looking for their 10th win of the year and have been in a rich vein of form in recent weeks, but in another blow to their big man stocks they will be missing the suspended Buddy Franklin.

The Bombers have slumped to four straight losses after a bright start to the year, and nothing less than a competitive effort against the Hawks will be tolerated by their legion of fans.

Saturday afternoon the Tigers and the Demons do battle at the MCG.

Both teams are in the mix for the top 8 and are in winning form, so the match should be a hard fought affair.

The Gold Coast host the Bulldogs in the other afternoon match.

The Dogs are coming off a much needed win, but despite that they will have a tough task against the Suns.

At home the Gold Coast can hold their own for a substantial part of the contest, and with some rested players back in the team an upset could be on the cards.

Saturday night Collingwood travel out of Melbourne for one of the few times in 2011 when the take the trip to Sydney to play the Swans.

With the contest at the Olympic Stadium, the Swans home ground advantage is negated and despite the game being a match up between two top 8 teams, the Pies should be far too strong.

Fremantle host Brisbane at Subiaco, with both teams desperate to get back on the winners list.

The Dockers have been cursed by injury this season and are in danger of slipping out of finals contention, however the return of Aaron Sandilands will help their cause.

The Lions continue to rebuild towards next year and they appear to be a way off matching the likes of the Dockers.

Sunday the Adelaide Crows face one of the toughest tests in the AFL - making the trip to Geelong to play the Cats.

Adelaide have lost their past 5 games and with their form flucuating wildly during games they will struggle to stay with the imposing Geelong team.

The Ctas are sitting clear at the top of the ladder and are starting to prime themselves for another tilt at a premiership, so a match against the 14th ranked team should be little trouble.

Carlton are one of the form teams in the league, winning 7 of their past 8 games and they host the Eagles at Docklands on Sunday.

However the Eagles will fly to Melbourne with hope of causing an upset, with their run at a top eight spot one of the surprises of the year.

The final match of the round sees Port Adelaide playing North melbourne at Football Park.

The Roos have started a mid season turnaround with three straight wins and they are still a rough finals chance.

The Power have struggled all year and are second last on the ladder, but in recent weeks they have been much more competitive and at home they could upset the Roos.
