Power dash Jurrah's AFL draft hopes

Updated December 10, 2012 20:55:25

Troubled ex-Melbourne forward Liam Jurrah will not be in the AFL next season after Port Adelaide ruled out punting on him in Tuesday's pre-season or rookie drafts.

Ex-Adelaide star forward Kurt Tippett is set to finally get his wish to join reigning premiers Sydney.

Tippett is the one big fish among the many recycled AFL players set to dominate the off-season's last recruiting opportunity.

But Jurrah faces at least a year in AFL exile.

The 24-year-old, who walked out on the Demons at the end of the 2012 AFL season, is due to face court in Alice Springs next March over assault charges.

He has trained with the Power in recent weeks.

But Port football manager Peter Rohde said injury-related fitness concerns and Jurrah's off-field troubles had put them off drafting him on Tuesday.

The Power have instead offered him a spot with their SANFL club, help with his court battle, assistance regaining fitness and a promise they will consider recruiting him for 2014.

The Swans will not enter the pre-season draft until pick number 11.

But with Greater Western Sydney, who have the top pick, having ruled out taking Tippett - who is suspended for next year's first 11 rounds over a draft and salary cap saga - and no signs of interest elsewhere, the way is clear for Sydney.

GWS plan to re-draft veteran ruckman Dean Brogan and are likely to also extend ex-Carlton key position player Bret Thornton's career.

The Crows will re-draft Nick Joyce, the youngster they de-listed before November's national draft when they were not allowed to cut Tippett.

Andrew Collins (Carlton), Ariel Steinberg (Essendon), Callum Bartlett (Brisbane), Peter Yagmoor (Collingwood), Jesse Crichton (Fremantle), Ben Speight and Cameron Richardson (North Melbourne) are others likely to be welcomed back onto the main or rookie lists of clubs that delisted them.

Collingwood will give veteran ruckman Ben Hudson his fourth AFL home through the rookie draft.

Ex-Geelong ruckman Orren Stephenson could be picked up by Richmond.

Former Geelong and Essendon midfielder Brent Prismall is hoping to join the Western Bulldogs.

He is battling for a spot with VFL player Brett Goodes, the brother of Sydney's Adam.

Other relatives of AFL players hoping for selection include Xavier Richards and Brandon Jack, the brothers of Sydney's Ted and Kieren respectively, who are on the Swans' radar.

Jordon Bourke, the son of former Geelong and Brisbane big man Damien, is seeking a spot with the Lions.

Dayle Garlett, cousin of Carlton's Jeff, is hoping to join Essendon, where he has been training after being overlooked in the national draft because of disciplinary concerns despite being rated one of the nation's most talented youngsters.

Power beat Bulldogs in London exhibition

Updated November 04, 2012 09:03:32

New coach Ken Hinkley has made a winning start to his time in charge of Port Adelaide with a one-point win in an AFL exhibition match against the Western Bulldogs in London.

Hinkley, who was only appointed to the top job last month, was at the helm as the Power edged out the Bulldogs 14.4 (88) to 13.9 (87) at The Oval cricket ground.

After trailing by six goals in the third quarter, the Power kicked nine majors on the trot before the 'Dogs reclaimed the lead in a see-sawing encounter.

To top off an entertaining evening in south London, Port Adelaide's Brad Ebert kicked the winning goal from the boundary line with only 40 seconds remaining.

Former Essendon forward Angus Monfries made an impact in his first outing for the Power by booting three goals although both teams were far from full strength.

Hinkley was happy for his young players to be on the right side of a scoreline following a forgettable season.

"I said to the players before hand 'you always want to win' it does not matter if it is an exhibition match or anything for us," he said.

"We are a club that needs to learn to win a bit."

Hinkley was an assistant coach at Geelong and the Gold Coast before finally being handed the reins at a club for the first time last month.

"I don't like losing and that is what most of us are about if we are in this game, we like to play to win and we were lucky enough to end up just in front tonight," he said.

"I am not sure whether we knew what we were doing, we have been together for three seconds but the coaching staff told me all along there was some talent here to work with and it is nice to see that."

Power set to announce coach

Updated October 08, 2012 10:01:22

Port Adelaide is set to announce the successor to Matthew Primus at 2.30pm (AEDT), with Ken Hinkley set to fill the coaching vacancy.

Hinkley will leave his role as assistant coach with the Gold Coast Suns to take over the position which has been vacant since Primus was sacked on August 6.

"The Port Adelaide Football Club will make a major announcement regarding its coaching structure at 2pm today (SA time)," the club said on Monday.

The new coach is expected to work alongside new coaching director Alan Richardson at Alberton.

Also joining the staff as head of sports science will be Darren Burgess, who recently left a similar role with English Premier League side Liverpool.

Hinkley was a two-time All-Australian and three-time losing grand finalist during his playing career at Geelong, for whom he was also a coaching assistant - working alongside his new Adelaide coaching rival, Brenton Sanderson.

Hinkley takes on Power gig

Updated October 08, 2012 15:29:43

Port Adelaide has officially announced Ken Hinkley as its senior coach for the next four seasons.

Hinkley, who will leave his role as Gold Coast assistant coach to link up with the Power, fills the vacancy left when Matthew Primus was sacked in August.

He was a two-time All-Australian and three-time losing grand finalist during his playing career at Geelong.

He also served as an assistant coach at St Kilda and worked under Mark Thompson at the Cats when they won flags in 2007 and 2009.

The Power also announced Alan Richardson as director of coaching and strategy and Darren Burgess as high performance manager.

Richardson was most recently an assistant coach at Carlton, while Burgess previously worked with the Power as head of fitness as well as at English Premier League giant Liverpool.

Hinkley has assumed what some critics consider a poisoned chalice, with Brett Ratten and Leon Cameron choosing to take roles with other clubs after being approached by the Power.

Former Sydney and Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade was also a Power target but he decided to stay on Collingwood's staff.

But the highly-regarded Hinkley has ignored the suggestion he was not the Power's preferred choice.

"People have said last man standing, I've heard those comments," he said.

"Maybe I was the right man standing."

Hinkley admits to being nervous about moving into the senior coaching role but it is a chance he is relishing.

"I think for a first-time AFL coach it is daunting, whichever club you have the opportunity to look at," he said.

"But for me I've been through a number of processes to try and achieve the result for myself today as a coach and I'm really excited by it."

Hinkley says he is excited by the player roster at the Power, who earlier in the day announced the successful recruitment of Angus Monfries as part of a trade with Essendon.

"I'm becoming excited more and more and to just walk into the place again today and meet some of the players - they're now my players and our players as a club," he said.

"I build incredibly strong relationships and I'm now looking forward to having that at the Port Adelaide Football Club."

Hinkley will begin his tenure at the Power later this month.

Hinkley poised to coach Power

Updated October 05, 2012 19:58:10

Port Adelaide is set to announce Ken Hinkley as its senior coach, ending a tortuous two-month process for the club.

The Power will formally confirm the Gold Coast assistant coach on Monday.

Also on Friday, losing grand finalists Hawthorn appointed sacked Carlton coach Brett Ratten as an assistant to Alastair Clarkson.

Ratten replaces Leon Cameron, who has gone to Greater Western Sydney on a four-year deal where he will take over from Kevin Sheedy as its senior coach from 2014.

Ratten and Cameron were candidates for the Power job, as was former Sydney and Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade.

But all three withdrew their interest, forcing Power chief executive Keith Thomas to defend the appointment process on the club website and say it had been "far from ... farcical".

On the same day in August that the Power sacked Primus, president Brett Duncanson tearfully announced he would also leave his post.

Earlier this week, the Power announced Sydney-based television personality David Koch would be their new president.

Last month, the club also had to deal with the death of player John McCarthy on a players' trip to Las Vegas.

This week, they lost players Danyle Pearce (to Fremantle) and Troy Chaplin (Richmond) to rival clubs under the new free agency system.

While the circumstances have not been ideal, Hinkley will go to Alberton with strong credentials.

He was an assistant at Geelong before going to the Suns and his former colleague, Adelaide senior coach Brenton Sanderson, are among those who say he will make a massive difference to the Power.

Hinkley, who turned 46 earlier this week, played 132 AFL matches for Fitzroy and Geelong from 1987-95 and was also an assistant coach at St Kilda.

The Power have not made the top eight since their record 2007 grand final loss to the Cats and are struggling financially.

Koch confirmed as Power chairman

Updated October 03, 2012 13:27:03

Channel Seven presenter David Koch will take over as chairman of financially-struggling Port Adelaide Football Club.

He will replace Brett Duncanson, who announced his intention to stand aside on the same day Matthew Primus was sacked as coach back in August.

Koch has been the Power's number one ticket holder since 2007.

He lives in Sydney but plans to fly to Adelaide each month for the club's board meetings.

"There is no way I underestimate the challenges going forward, but I'm excited because I think that together we can make a difference and have a great impact as we guide the club through an incredibly exciting period," Koch said.

He said he was determined to see Port Adelaide achieve success again on the football field and be financially strong away from it and planned to help boost the Power's national profile.

"It was put to us that Port Adelaide really wasn't that relevant in Melbourne or Sydney. This state deserves two really strong clubs, the football tradition here, and we want to get Port Adelaide back to where it should be," he told reporters.

Koch grew up at nearby Largs Bay in Adelaide.

"I am lucky enough to be a part of a great family tradition of supporting Port Adelaide," he said.

"My extended family, including cousins and their children, are all Port Adelaide people and they go to every game to support Port Adelaide in the outer. That will never change."

Hawthorn assistant coach Leon Cameron has been strongly tipped to get the job of coaching the Power next season, but has also been interviewed by Greater Western Sydney about a coaching position.

Power chief executive Keith Thomas said a decision on Port Adelaide's coaching job was yet to be made.

"We're right at the tail end of the process. I'm hoping that we can make that announcement if not by the end of this week, very early next week," he said.

Boak signature delivers Power surge

Updated September 06, 2012 16:20:01

Port Adelaide has received a major boost with the news that key on-baller Travis Boak has re-signed with the club.

The Power announced on Thursday that Boak, who had been closely linked to a move to Geelong, had signed a contract extension until the end of 2014.

The 24-year-old has played 108 matches for the Power and was promoted to vice-captain in February this year.

But his future has been the subject of intense speculation, with Geelong coach Chris Scott and Cats' players Joel Selwood and Jimmy Bartel causing a media storm when they were spotted arriving at Adelaide Airport in July to make a play for Boak's services.

Power general manager of football Peter Rohde says the club is delighted to have re-signed Boak given his qualities as both a player and a person.

"Travis is obviously a key player for our club who has an amazing work rate, wins a lot of the ball both inside and out and generates a lot of inside 50s for our forwards," Rohde said in a statement.

"He is an important part of our leadership group, is extremely popular around the club and drives the standards for our entire playing group through the way he trains and prepares."

It has been a tumultuous season for the Power, with former club captain Matthew Primus departing as coach when told he would not be in charge of the club in 2013 after a disastrous loss to Greater Western Sydney.

But Boak's decision will make things slightly easier for whomever is chosen to fill the coaching vacancy - a decision is expected by the end of September.

"We got a clear indication several weeks ago that Travis wanted to stay and we had been working through some details since that point," Rohde said.

"All the way through Travis maintained that he wanted to play for Port Adelaide, he loved the club and was excited by its direction. And even though he is away from his family, he also really enjoys living in Adelaide," Rohde said.

Boak says he is delighted to re-sign with the club.

"The last two years doesn't reflect the talent of our group and I think we're going to realise our potential in the near future. I'm very excited about what lies ahead and that was another major factor in my decision to stay," he said.

Power slam Cats' Boak bid

Updated July 17, 2012 08:49:31

Port Adelaide has slammed Geelong for its public courtship of out-of-contract midfielder Travis Boak.

Cats coach Chris Scott, captain Joel Selwood and Brownlow medal winner Jimmy Bartel were seen arriving in Adelaide Airport on Sunday to present the case to the former Geelong Falcons junior that he should move back East.

Power chief executive Keith Thomas reacted furiously to the news and issued a statement criticising the Cats' conduct.

"We respect the Geelong Football Club very much, but if Matthew Primus, Domenic Cassisi and Travis Boak were to bowl into Geelong to meet with Joel Selwood, I am sure Brian Cook, his players and supporters would feel more than a little disrespected," Thomas said in a club statement.

"Subtle conversations are one thing, but arriving with shiny buttons and a brass band is quite a different matter.

"We will keep talking to Travis and we remain very comfortable with where our discussions with him are placed."

Foley has Power in his sights

Updated August 07, 2012 15:36:49

Former South Australian treasurer Kevin Foley has expressed interest in being the next president of financially-struggling Port Adelaide Football Club.

Current president Brett Duncanson will stand down at the end of the year, an announcement made on the same day Matthew Primus gave up the senior coaching role.

Mr Foley said he had not been formally approached but would consider nominating.

"I don't need the publicity or the ego trip or the pressure that comes with this job," he said.

"If I did it, I would do it out of genuine concern about my club and with an aim to do what I could to restore the club to a very strong position.

"I've got to think long and hard whether I want to get back into a high-profile, you know, media-driven, stressful job again. I've just got out of one and, you know, I've got some thinking to do. I'm not ruling it out, but I'm not necessarily at all saying that it's one I will take or want to take."

Mr Foley said later in the day he had found significant support after flagging his interest in the presidency and the club needed unity if it were to see success on the field.

"I don't think it's healthy for the club to have a period of uncertainty as they think about who may or may not be prepared to put their hand up," he said.

"I'm putting my hand up, I'm you know seriously considering running for president and if that encourages others all the better."

Mr Foley said if he became club president, Port nostalgia or personalities would not be among his priorities.

"This will have to be a single, focused task to support (club CEO) Keith Thomas, to support the administration, to support the coach and players," he said.

"I'm not going into this for any publicity, those days are way past me.

"I'll go in to do a job and I'm not going to be hung up if I upset people on the way through."

The Power has been bailed out financially by the AFL, but continues to struggle on the field, having won just five matches in the current AFL season.

With Primus gone, it is searching for a new coach and has made Garry Hocking the interim coach for the last four rounds of the current season.

Cameron will be AFL's best in five years: Power

Updated August 18, 2012 12:53:40

Speaking ahead of his 300th AFL match, Luke Power has tipped his young Giants team-mate Jeremy Cameron to become the best player in the AFL in five years.

Cameron is Greater Western Sydney's top scorer this season with 29 goals but this week was ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing hip surgery.

This absence from the field may prove costly for Cameron in terms of winning the AFL's Rising Star award but Power - who combines playing with assistant coaching duties at the Giants - is certain the North Ballarat recruit is the best prospect.

"He's probably the most special young player I've ever seen in my time in football with what he can do," Power told Grandstand Sports Breakfast.

"I think he's kicked about 30 goals in his first season in a team that doesn't score too many goals."

"Without pumping him up too much ... I think he'll be the best player in the comp in five years!"

Power moved to Greater Western Sydney at the end of the 2011 season after playing 282 games, and winning three flags, with Brisbane.

Listen to the interview in full to hear Power discuss highlights of his illustrious career.

Power shock Kangaroos at death

Updated May 19, 2012 18:07:38

Jay Schulz kicked seven goals as Port Adelaide staged a remarkable comeback from 32 points down against North Melbourne to win by two points at Football Park.

Schulz's perfect kicking, which included four goals in the final quarter, brought Port back in position to seal a remarkable victory but it was Paul Stewart's major with less than a minute remaining which saw them surge to a 14.11 (95) to 14.9 (93) win.

It was Port's first lead since midway through the second quarter.

After scoring five goals in the first quarter, the Power only managed three in the next two stanzas, putting them behind the eight ball.

Drew Petrie kicked five goals for the Kangaroos while Andrew Swallow's 12 tackles quelled Port's attacks for much of the game.

Schulz was keen to put the comeback down to a team effort and said coach Matthew Primus encouraged his troops that victory was still possible despite their 21-point deficit at three-quarter time.

"It was just hard work today - it was an absolute slog," Schulz said.

"Matty said 'take the game on no matter what'.

"We managed to get a run on. Showed great spirit and great determination.

"When we do take risks, we can be a good and damaging side. Hopefully this is the start of something good for us.

"This doesn't count a great deal for us unless we back it up this week.

"We know when we play our best footy we're good enough to challenge most sides."

Danyle Pearce, fresh from a spell in SANFL, was Port's best on ground.

"Pearcey was fantastic. He went back to the SANFL - it was quite hard for him to cop," Schulz said.

"(But) he thought he deserved that cop.

"He went back and he was tremendous with his defensive stuff. That's what they told him to work on.

"I told him at the start 'you just run all day no matter what'. He was fantastic for us, one of the stand-outs, it was one of his best games for a while."

Schulz himself was playing his first game back after an eye injury.

"I have a new-found respect for people who have eye issues," he admitted.

"It wasn't my eye that kept me out last week. It affected my balance, made me feel nauseous. I don't wish anyone to go through that."Ultimately, Port's six-goal final quarter, which could have been more considering their five behinds, saw them over the line to the delight of the near 15,000 in attendance.

There could be more bad news for North coach Brad Scott as Brent Harvey could be charged for a forearm to the head of Chad Wingard.

Port Adelaide: 14.11 (95): Goals - Schulz 7, Broadbent, Cornes, Brett Ebert, Jacobs, McCarthy, Stewart, Westhoff.

North Melbourne: 14.9 (93): Goals - Petrie 5, Thomas 2, Wells, 2, Harvey, Pedersen, Swallow, Warren, Ziebell.

Power lose Trengove for opener

Updated March 26, 2012 17:53:55

Port Adelaide key defender Jackson Trengove will watch his side's AFL season opener against St Kilda from the sidelines after being ruled out with a finger injury.

Trengove suffered a small fracture against the Demons in a preseason cup clash on March 16.

Power football manager Peter Rohde said the club did not want to push its luck with the young star.

"The medical advice is that if he plays this week and displaces the fracture he may require surgery and need an extensive break from playing," he said in a statement.

"Our understanding is that if he has this weekend off he is much less likely to re-injure the finger when playing next week and will therefore just miss the one game.

"We will reassess his injury next week in anticipation that he will be available for round two."

Cassisi keeps Power captaincy

Updated February 10, 2012 16:24:57

Midfielder Dom Cassisi will captain Port Adelaide for a fourth straight season, with Hamish Hartlett the only newcomer in the club's five-man leadership group.

Travis Boak has been promoted to vice-captain, while 21-year-old defender Jackson Trengove, who shared the club's best and fairest award with Boak last year, remains part of the group.

The other member is key forward Jay Schulz.

Coach Matthew Primus said Cassisi, 29, remained a stand-out choice as skipper.

"Dom keeps developing his leadership skills every year and he really stood tall both on and off the field last season in what was a very challenging year," he said.

"He's got the ultimate respect of the playing group, the coaches and everyone involved at our club so it was a unanimous decision.

"We're looking forward to supporting him as he continues to grow and develop in the role."

Cassisi said it was good to have some youngsters supporting him, with Hartlett and Trengove both 21.

"I'm extremely excited about the young leadership group I'm going to have around me," he said.

"I know we're going to be able to drive the culture and behaviours that we need and expect at the club."

Power record another loss

Updated December 13, 2011 07:54:22

Port Adelaide has recorded another loss of more than $3 million as the club continues to struggle on and off the field.

The Power reported a consolidated operating profit of $887,981, but that was after financial assistance from the SANFL worth more than $4 million.

Their loss was $3.16 million, which was an improvement on last year's $3.69 million result in the red.

Power president Brett Duncanson says the club needs more improvement in match day and sponsorship revenues.

"We suffered in 2011 through lower-than-expected AFL home ground crowds, which were impacted on by some scheduling issues together with our teams on-field results," he said in a statement.

"It highlights the need for our members and supporters to get along to our home games and support the team and at the same time help our clubs bottom line."

The SANFL help included a $2.05 million grant, held over from last year, and $2 million made available through a loan to the SA Football Commission from the AFL.

Power players come to blows

Updated December 07, 2011 16:59:13

Port Adelaide players Jay Schulz and Jackson Trengove had to be separated after punches were thrown during an AFL training session on Wednesday.

Key defender Trengove seemed to be upset by the way Schulz entered a marking contest and threw two punches at Schulz, which both missed their mark.

Team-mates including skipper Dom Cassisi rushed to separate the pair, who are both in Port's leadership group.

The skirmish was an eye-opener for Port's new draftees Nathan Blee and Brendon Ah Chee, but they liked what they saw.

"It shows how passionate and competitive they are and how much everyone wants success next year," 21-year-old defender Blee said.

"I think it's good for the club."

"It was definitely a positive," Ah Chee told reporters.

"Afterwards everything was fine with them, it's not like they're hating on each other or anything - they're good mates."

Power re-sign Brett Ebert

Updated October 07, 2011 19:55:07

Port Adelaide has re-signed forward Brett Ebert and his cousin Brad could soon join him at the AFL club.

Brett played his 150th game at the end of this season, in which he managed only 12 games because of a knee injury and illness.

He is the son of SA football icon Russell Ebert, who starred for Port Adelaide in the local league.

Brad told West Coast this week that he wants to be traded to either the Power or Adelaide.

According to media reports, the Crows do not want to become involved in a bidding war.

Brad has played 76 games for the Eagles, but only played in one of their three finals matches last month.

He is the son of Russell's younger brother Craig, who also played for Port and West Adelaide in the SANFL.

Power take axe to list

Updated September 22, 2011 13:39:58

Port Adelaide has axed three players while another, former Richmond utility Danny Meyer, has retired from the AFL.

The Power delisted Marlon Motlop and rookies Matthew Westhoff and Callum Hay to free up spaces on their list entering the trade period.

Motlop, the 25-year-old cousin of Power goalsneak Daniel Motlop, was discarded after managing just five matches in four seasons.

Westhoff, 23, the brother of Power forward Justin, played just six matches over four years while Hay, 19, was a rookie-listed player who never made an AFL debut.

Meyer, 25, has retired after playing nine matches for the Power over two seasons after being recruited from Richmond, where he played 16 matches.

Power down Northern Knights

The Power's Rob Reid was delighted with the win and the ability of the team to come back from a very disappointing game last week.

With a number of players not available due to being selected for representative squads their absence has allowed other players to get some first team game time and impress the coaches and possible talent scouts from AFL teams.

Rob Reid says Tom Fusinato from Warragul is an example of a player who has taken his chance when being called into the first team.

"He came into the team just a few weeks ago...he's been one of the best players since he came in and he's just showed what a classy little player he really is."

The Power play the Bendigo Pioneers at Box Hill on Saturday.
