AFL Preview: Round 11

Round 11 begins with Melbourne once again on the big stage of Friday night football when they take on Essendon at the MCG.

The Bombers are coming off a much need bye and the week off should see the speed return to game and their young players will once again be hard to contain.

The Dees continue to be under pressure after losing their last three, but the inclusion of Jack Trengove will be welcomed by the team and their under siege coach.

Saturday

Saturday the Cats host the Dogs at Kardinia Park.

Geelong remain unbeaten for 2011 and it seems unlikely they will drop this game against the Bulldogs, a team that has made their poorest start to a season since 2004 with just three wins to date.

The Cats haven't lost at home for since 2008, with a winning run of 25 straight likely to be extended by one this weekend.

It's a battle of the Coast's in the west on Saturday afternoon, with the West Coast Eagles hosting the Gold Coast Suns.

The Eagles have been the most improved team this season and should retain their top 8 spot with a victory this weekend, while the Suns will be missing Karmichael Hunt for the first time in their history after he was suspended for 1 week.

Keeping on the rugby league theme, it's State of Origin of a different kind at the Gabba on Saturday night with Brisbane up against Sydney.

The Lions are on a two game winning streak and with captain Brown back in the team they will more than match Sydney.

The Swans fell over the line against North Melbourne last week, and although they appear to be struggling in attack they will be sure to put up a competitive effort.

The other match on Saturday night is the pick of the round, with Collingwood and St Kilda meeting in a Grand Final rematch.

A few weeks ago this was looking like a mismatch, but the Saints have finally found some form and Collingwood will go into the match without gun midfielder Dane Swan.

However the Pies should be far too strong and with arguably the hottest player in the competition in the form of Dale Thomas, Collingwood will end the Saints mid season revival.

Sunday

Sunday the high flying Hawks host the Dockers at the MCG, the first time these two teams have ever met at this venue.

Hawthorn is quietly returning to the form that saw them claim the flag in 2008 and if Buddy kicks straight they will win with ease.

The Dockers again will be missing big man Aaron Sandilands, and in the past 6 games that Sandilands has missed the Dockers have lost - expect that trend to continue.

Brent Harvey equals the North Melbourne games record this weekend against the Crows, with the midfielder playing his 311th game for the Roos.

The celebration will be added motivation for his team as the look to overcome a Crows team looking to rebound after a disappointing loss last week.

The Crows will have been stung by the criticism of them after going down to the Lions in Round 10, and will need to be at their best if they want to stop their losing streak at two.

The final match of the round will no doubt provide the smallest crowd of the weekend, with Port Adelaide hosting Carlton in wintery conditions at Football Park.

The Power have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons throughout the week, with the AFL having to come to their financial rescue.

Not only do they need help off the field, but this week they will need help on it as they come up against one of the form teams of the comp and one of the best players in the shape of Chris Judd.

The Power will be desperate to put up a good performance on the field as they battle to stay in contention for an unlikely finals spot.
