Drummond takes coaching role with North

Updated November 08, 2012 19:44:24

Injury-plagued Brisbane defender Josh Drummond, who announced his retirement from the AFL in September, has joined North Melbourne as a development coach.

Drummond, known for his pin-point left kicks and rebounding runs out of defence, hung up the boots after managing just 94 games in nine seasons with the Lions.

The 29-year-old will work alongside former team-mate Brad Scott, focusing on the youngest Kangaroos as they seek to make the transition from VFL to AFL.

Drummond initially made contact with North Melbourne to discuss a chronic hip injury with renowned physiotherapist Steve Saunders, the side's medical services director.

"I came to get a bit of closure on where I was at and whether there was anything worth salvaging from a playing point of view," Drummond said of the latest in a long list of major injury setbacks.

"Once we came to the agreement that there probably wasn't much to do, we spoke about the coaching thing.

"It's really exciting to be down here and get stuck into it. I know (coach) Brad (Scott) well from playing and I've also met Brady (Rawlings) through his brother Jade who coached us up at Brisbane."

Eade joins Pies' coaching staff

Updated October 03, 2011 14:22:28

Former Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade will join Collingwood's coaching staff for the 2012 season to act as a mentor for rookie coach Nathan Buckley.

Eade will take on the role of football and coaching strategist, the Magpies announced on Monday.

Buckley succeeds Mick Malthouse, who stepped down as senior coach following a 12-year stint.

Malthouse, 58, guided the Magpies to a premiership in 2010 and a 38-point loss to Geelong in last week's grand final.

Three-time premiership coach Malthouse had been contracted to stay on at Collingwood in a coaching director role for next season but announced within hours of the grand final that he was pulling out.

"The role by name sounded pretty good, but in reality I'm not 100 per cent sure that I would be of value to the football club," Malthouse said on Saturday night.

"I don't want to take money under false pretences, I think that Nathan needs space."

Eade coached the Bulldogs for the past seven seasons and is also a former Sydney coach.

The four-time Hawthorn premiership player will also coach Australia in the International Rules series against Ireland in October/November in Melbourne and Gold Coast.

"I'm thrilled to be given the opportunity to work at Collingwood and be part of what is clearly one of the most professional and well-resourced football programs in the AFL," Eade said.

"I'm looking forward to joining Nathan and his team and doing everything possible to ensure Collingwood remains in a position to challenge for the 2012 premiership."

The Magpies have lost midfield coach Mark Neeld to Melbourne but they have recruited former Adelaide assistant Ben Hart to join Collingwood as Buckley's defensive coach.

Eade will report to football director Geoff Walsh.

Monday's announcement is a blow for St Kilda, which is yet to secure a senior coach for next year following the shock defection of Ross Lyon to Fremantle.

Egan joins Bombers' coaching ranks

Updated October 06, 2011 13:37:08

Geelong assistant coach Matthew Egan has joined Essendon, the Bombers have confirmed.

The 28-year-old leaves the Cats less than a week after Geelong clinched its third AFL premiership in five years with victory over Collingwood in the 2011 grand final.

The Bombers have lost assistant coach Brendan McCartney, who switched to Essendon from Geelong in 2011, but has now claimed the senior-coaching job at Western Bulldogs for next season.

Essendon Football operations manager Paul Hamilton said Egan's knowledge of the game and ability to develop players would be a huge boost for the Bombers.

"We are very lucky to have secured someone of Matt's experience who will be able to relate to our young playing list through his experiences as a player and as a young coach," Hamilton said.

Egan, who also worked with Geelong's VFL team in 2011, was reportedly being chased by McCartney to link up with the Bulldogs in 2012.

"I am very excited to get the opportunity to work with Essendon," Egan said.

"They are obviously a young and exciting playing group and a group that I feel I can have an impact with given my experiences.

"It's a great opportunity for my career. I am also rapt to work with some young and dynamic coaches and that's what excited me to work with James Hird and the rest of the coaching group."

Egan played 59 games for the Cats before a foot injury cut short his career.

He worked as a VFL assistant coach in 2009 and joined Geelong's AFL coaching staff the following year.

AFL coaching legend Jeans dies

Updated July 13, 2011 17:04:55

Legendary AFL coach Allan Jeans has died at the age of 77.

Jeans, known as one of the league's toughest coaches and greatest motivators, died in a nursing home after a long illness.

After a 77-game playing career with St Kilda, Jeans became coach of the club in 1961 at the age of 28 before leading the Saints to their only flag in 1966.

Following 16 years with the Saints he was appointed coach of Hawthorn in 1981, going on to win premierships in 1983, 1986 and 1989.

Under Jeans, the Hawks dominated the VFL, appearing in seven successive grand finals from 1983 to 1989 - excluding 1988 when Jeans suffered a brain haemorrhage and Alan Joyce took over and won the flag.

Jeans later had a short stint at Richmond in 1992, winning only five out of 22 games.

He was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 1996.

"Hawthorn Football Club has lost a very humble and extraordinary individual, who not only nurtured many of our players, but also led the club to premierships in 1983, 1986 and 1989," Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett said.

"We will all miss him."

St Kilda chief executive Michael Nettlefold said the Saints will wear black arm bands in round 17 to honour the contribution Jeans made to the St Kilda club.

"Allan's contribution to the game went well beyond the statistics as his coaching changed the way the game was played," he said.

"Allan generously continued his contribution to the game well after his active coaching career finished, sharing his extensive knowledge of coaching and our great game."

"Allan was a person of great strength, honesty and integrity and will forever be remembered as the man who helped deliver our first premiership cup."

"Our sincere thoughts and condolences go to his family and friends at this difficult time."

Saints premiership hero and close friend Kevin 'Cowboy' Neale said Jeans was a father figure to many he coached.

"Whilst his football and coaching exploits were well known, the way he offered his support and advice to me away from the game is something that I will cherish the most," Neale said.

"From the coaches box he was ferocious and fearless and took our young side to the pinnacle of our game. He pioneered the modern coaching style and many of his contemporaries followed suit with great success. He will be sorely missed."

Michael Voss on coaching the Brisbane Lions

It was a decade ago that the Brisbane Lions won the first of their now legendary three-in-a-row premierships, nearly four!

The Lions have since struggled to regain such blistering form, languishing anywhere between 10th and 13th except in 2009 when, under new coach Michael Voss, the side made the semi-finals.

Voss was arguably one of the best players the AFL has ever seen, a Brownlow medallist, All-Australian team captain, someone who could turn a game around and inspire a team to victory.

Voss took up the role of senior coach when Leigh Matthews stepped aside, but that move hasn't been all smooth sailing.

Coaching any top level team, no matter what the code, is not for the faint of heart.

Michael Voss joined Kelly Higgins-Devine on 612 ABC Brisbane.
