Free agent Young joins Collingwood

Updated October 21, 2012 21:55:14

Clinton Young's lethal left foot was encased in a moon boot as the free agent joined his new home at Collingwood.

Young had off-season surgery on Tuesday and, two days later, made the tough decision to leave Hawthorn and join the Magpies.

After several weeks of negotiations with the Hawks, Young decided to join Collingwood on the last day of the league's first free agency period on a three-year deal.

The only other deal of the day involved Richmond ruckman Angus Graham being traded to Adelaide.

The Crows will receive Graham and pick 50 in exchange for pick 40.

Meanwhile, North Melbourne re-signed tall forward Lachlan Hansen for another two seasons while Essendon managed to keep Scott Gumbleton for another year.

Gumbleton, who has been cruelled with injuries since being selected with the second overall pick of the 2006 Draft, reportedly turned down a longer deal with the Bulldogs to stay with the Bombers.

Young, 26, played 116 games for the Hawks and was a member of their 2008 premiership team.

"There were a lot of things to consider. Certainly there wasn't one thing that made it easy but, for many reasons, it was a tough decision," said Young, who was an unrestricted free agent.

"There were lots of things to consider and I'm just relieved it's all over now."

Young struggled in the grand final loss to Sydney and he admitted it was a disappointing way to end his playing career at Hawthorn.

The longer trade period worked to his advantage as he weighed up his options.

"For me, moving from the grand final and having surgery, it was handy to have a bit of time," he said.

"As hard as it is, it was good to have a bit of time to make the decision."

Collingwood director of football Geoff Walsh noted that Young would be one of the Magpies' rare left-foot players and said his ball-carrying ability would be a major asset.

"He runs and carries the ball - he kicks it very well," Walsh said.

"He's a left footer, we don't have a helluva lot of left footers, which might be a bit oblique, but that's a bit of a plus.

"On transitions, he's probably an 80-90m player. He carries it and kicks it really well."

Young will join his new team-mates for a training camp in Utah in December.

Walsh said Young went through a medical examination before the deal was done.

"We knew the operation was inevitable, that it had to happen," he said.

"The post-operative report from the doc is that he'll be well into his rehab phase and running by Christmas.

"We're not looking at the next three months - we're looking at he's three, four, hopefully five-year player for us."

Collingwood has also gained West Coast's Quinten Lynch through free agency, while Sharrod Wellingham (Eagles) and Chris Dawes (Melbourne) were traded.

Ratten joins Hawks

Updated October 05, 2012 17:04:24

Sacked Carlton coach Brett Ratten has joined Hawthorn's staff for the 2013 season.

Ratten was forced out of the Blues last month after the club failed to make the finals and opted to appoint Mick Malthouse to the senior coaching position.

He will join the Hawks as an assistant to senior coach Alastair Clarkson.

The announcement comes a day after Clarkson's former assistant Leon Cameron joined Kevin Sheedy's staff at Greater Western Sydney.

"Brett is an excellent addition to our coaching line-up and will bring a great deal of experience and coaching nous to our Club," Clarkson said in a statement.

"With Leon's recent departure, it's pleasing that a coach of Brett's calibre can step in immediately and I'm sure he will complement our team of coaches well."

Ratten took over as Blues senior coach in mid-2007 and led the club to the finals from 2009 to 2011.

He was also a premiership player with the Blues in 1995 and a former captain, having played 255 senior matches in total.

Primus joins Suns staff

Updated September 26, 2012 22:06:38

Former Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus has joined Gold Coast to work as an assistant to Guy McKenna.

Primus will act as the midfield coach with the Suns, taking over the role from Shane O'Bree, and also take on a brief to work with the club's ruckman - the position he excelled in during his playing career at the Power.

"We are thrilled to confirm that Matthew has accepted an assistant coaching role," Suns general manager Marcus Ashcroft said.

"He brings considerable experience and we believe he has a significant amount to offer our club.

"Matthew's ability to educate and develop our ruckmen and key position players, as well as working with our midfield group ensures our playing group will benefit from the best possible tuition as we continue to develop our list."

Primus said he was looking forward to heading north to continue his coaching career.

“It was great to have the Gold Coast SUNS show interest in having me join their coaching staff and looking at their list," he said.

"It’s clear they have a great bunch of young players and I am certainly looking forward to working with them when preseason training gets under way, everyone who knows me knows I love coaching and I love teaching, so this is a great opportunity.”

The appointment follows the Power's sacking of Primus after their round 19 loss to Greater Western Sydney last month.

He guided the Power for 47 matches, having taken over from Mark Williams during the 2010 season.

Shaw joins Magpies' injury list

Updated May 31, 2012 20:12:52

Collingwood's injury-hit defence has taken another blow, with Heath Shaw to miss Sunday's clash with Gold Coast with a calf injury.

While the Magpies hope the experienced backman will miss just one match, it adds to the unsettled state of a defence which also lost young full-back Lachlan Keeffe for the season with a knee injury.

The good news for the Magpies was Nathan Brown was named at full-back to return from the latest in his series of knee injuries.

But fellow tall defenders Chris Tarrant and Ben Reid were not in the 25-man squad and Brownlow medallist Dane Swan is still sidelined.

Magpies football manager Geoff Walsh says it is uncertain whether Shaw will return for the round 11 Queen's Birthday match with Melbourne.

The struggling Suns dropped ruckman-forward Zac Smith.

Reigning premiers Geelong regained midfield gun James Kelly and named two AFL debutants, Jordan Schroder and Lincoln McCarthy, for Saturday's Kardinia Park meeting with Greater Western Sydney.

As forecast, forward Tom Hawkins will miss the match after minor knee surgery.

The Giants also named a first-gamer, last year's number seven draft pick Nick Haynes.

Essendon welcomed back veteran Dustin Fletcher, fellow backman Kyle Hardingham and small forward Leroy Jetta for Saturday night's MCG encounter with Melbourne, but lost Mark McVeigh (hip).

Midfielder-forward Colin Sylvia was recalled for the winless Demons.

Fremantle made three changes after last Sunday's Derby to West Coast, dropping Jonathon Griffin, Alex Silvagni and Jay van Berlo for Saturday's match with Adelaide and including debutant Hayden Crozier.

Star forward Taylor Walker returns from suspension for the Crows.

Brisbane will find it harder to combat West Coast star ruck pairing Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui after losing Billy Longer (back) for Sunday's Gabba clash, along with Simon Black (knee).

The Eagles lost Luke Shuey (suspension) and Sam Butler (hamstring).

Hawthorn dropped Stephen Gilham, after last round's thrashing by Richmond, adding midfield run by replacing him with first-year player Bradley Hill for Saturday's Launceston meeting with North Melbourne.

The unchanged Kangaroos are still missing injured ruckman Hamish McIntosh.

Sydney hope ruckman Shane Mumford proves his recovery from a back injury at training on Friday, after naming him on their extended bench for Sunday's SCG fixture with Western Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs added defender Easton Wood and forward Ayce Cordy to their squad.

Carlton regained running backman Chris Yarran for Saturday night's Football Park meeting with Port Adelaide, but are still without key defender Lachie Henderson and key forward Jarrad Waite.

Richmond welcomed back Jake Batchelor for Friday night's pivotal match with St Kilda, who lost Jarryn Geary to injury and remain without Sam Fisher.

Former Adelaide Crows forward Brett Burton has been appointed to the AFL's laws of the game committee.

Hall joins Fev in country footy

Updated May 10, 2012 12:42:20

Former AFL forward Barry Hall is pulling on the boots again to play football in country Victoria.

Hall has been recruited by Wangaratta Rovers in the second major signing for the Ovens and Murray League this season.

Former Carlton and Brisbane forward Brendan Fevola is playing for Yarrawonga Pigeons.

Wangaratta coach Mick Caruso says he is confident Hall will be just as big a drawcard as Fevola.

"He'll play at least three games possibly four games," he said.

"Of course they will be all home games for us in the back end of the season, if we are lucky enough to make the finals we would be expecting that a lot of people would come to watch Barry Hall play, absolutely."

Hall played 289 matches for St Kilda, Sydney and Western Bulldogs, booting 746 goals.

Eade joins Pies' coaching staff

Updated October 03, 2011 14:22:28

Former Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade will join Collingwood's coaching staff for the 2012 season to act as a mentor for rookie coach Nathan Buckley.

Eade will take on the role of football and coaching strategist, the Magpies announced on Monday.

Buckley succeeds Mick Malthouse, who stepped down as senior coach following a 12-year stint.

Malthouse, 58, guided the Magpies to a premiership in 2010 and a 38-point loss to Geelong in last week's grand final.

Three-time premiership coach Malthouse had been contracted to stay on at Collingwood in a coaching director role for next season but announced within hours of the grand final that he was pulling out.

"The role by name sounded pretty good, but in reality I'm not 100 per cent sure that I would be of value to the football club," Malthouse said on Saturday night.

"I don't want to take money under false pretences, I think that Nathan needs space."

Eade coached the Bulldogs for the past seven seasons and is also a former Sydney coach.

The four-time Hawthorn premiership player will also coach Australia in the International Rules series against Ireland in October/November in Melbourne and Gold Coast.

"I'm thrilled to be given the opportunity to work at Collingwood and be part of what is clearly one of the most professional and well-resourced football programs in the AFL," Eade said.

"I'm looking forward to joining Nathan and his team and doing everything possible to ensure Collingwood remains in a position to challenge for the 2012 premiership."

The Magpies have lost midfield coach Mark Neeld to Melbourne but they have recruited former Adelaide assistant Ben Hart to join Collingwood as Buckley's defensive coach.

Eade will report to football director Geoff Walsh.

Monday's announcement is a blow for St Kilda, which is yet to secure a senior coach for next year following the shock defection of Ross Lyon to Fremantle.

Egan joins Bombers' coaching ranks

Updated October 06, 2011 13:37:08

Geelong assistant coach Matthew Egan has joined Essendon, the Bombers have confirmed.

The 28-year-old leaves the Cats less than a week after Geelong clinched its third AFL premiership in five years with victory over Collingwood in the 2011 grand final.

The Bombers have lost assistant coach Brendan McCartney, who switched to Essendon from Geelong in 2011, but has now claimed the senior-coaching job at Western Bulldogs for next season.

Essendon Football operations manager Paul Hamilton said Egan's knowledge of the game and ability to develop players would be a huge boost for the Bombers.

"We are very lucky to have secured someone of Matt's experience who will be able to relate to our young playing list through his experiences as a player and as a young coach," Hamilton said.

Egan, who also worked with Geelong's VFL team in 2011, was reportedly being chased by McCartney to link up with the Bulldogs in 2012.

"I am very excited to get the opportunity to work with Essendon," Egan said.

"They are obviously a young and exciting playing group and a group that I feel I can have an impact with given my experiences.

"It's a great opportunity for my career. I am also rapt to work with some young and dynamic coaches and that's what excited me to work with James Hird and the rest of the coaching group."

Egan played 59 games for the Cats before a foot injury cut short his career.

He worked as a VFL assistant coach in 2009 and joined Geelong's AFL coaching staff the following year.
