Hawks lose Whitecross to ACL injury

Updated September 08, 2012 17:59:42

Hawthorn's Brendan Whitecross faces a long stretch of rehabilitation after the club confirmed he has ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament.

Whitecross sustained the injury early in Friday night's qualifying final win over Collingwood at the MCG.

The injury will wipe him out for the rest of this year and potentially impact on the start of next season.

While backman Brent Guerra (hamstring) is also unlikely to play again this year, Jordan Lewis (hamstring) and Clinton Young (calf) are expected to return for the Hawks' preliminary final, after missing Friday night's match with minor injuries.

Despite being forced to use its subearly, Hawthorn ran rampant over Collingwood in the second half sealing a 20.15 (137) to 15.7 (97) victory.

Cats' Menzel suffers another knee injury

Updated June 02, 2012 22:58:13

Highly-rated Geelong youngster Daniel Menzel is facing another knee reconstruction in another devastating setback to his AFL career.

The 20-year-old forward was making his comeback on Saturday after needing the same surgery last September.

Menzel was playing for Geelong's VFL side at Kardinia Park against North Ballarat when he went down in the third term.

It was costly VFL match for the Cats - Allen Christensen, who was returning from a calf muscle injury, was also taken to hospital when he was concussed in the final term.

Menzel had to be stretchered from the field after his injury.

Cats football manager Neil Balme said the club was 90 per cent sure Menzel had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Menzel suffered the same injury in his right knee during last September's qualifying final against Hawthorn.

He will undergo scans to confirm the injury.

If Menzel needs a reconstruction, his football season is over.

"We're not over-optimistic about it, we'll wait and see what happens," Balme told SEN.

"He's a very young man and they get them right nowadays.

"We have to take the positive view and say that will be good, but right now I think it will be very hard to convince him of that optimistic view of things."

Balme said Menzel had started the game well and kicked a couple of goals.

The Cats football manager said Menzel had made an outstanding play immediately before he was injured.

"I saw him - he went for the ball very quickly and picked up a fabulous half-volley and gave off a handball," Balme said.

"I followed the ball then and the next thing, something was down.

"I haven't seen the replay, but I don't think there was any other player involved - it wasn't someone falling over him.

"He was full pace, half-volley, off the ground, quick give - he was ready to play, don't worry about that."

Menzel continues a rash of ACL ruptures so far this season, which now extends to around a dozen.

It is not uncommon for a footballer to suffer more than one ACL rupture, but it is unusually shocking luck to suffer the same injury in his first comeback game following a knee reconstruction.

"Maybe it says that he has ACLs that are not that strong - or my feeling is he's that powerful, maybe he has to work harder than others," Balme said.

"The whole physics of it, I wonder what that means."

Menzel has played 20 games since his 2010 debut and was enjoying strong form last year before he missed out on Geelong's premiership because of the reconstruction.

Former Cats star Cameron Mooney said if Menzel can return to full fitness for an extended period, he is capable of winning a Brownlow Medal.

Pendles injury scare in Pies' big win

Updated June 03, 2012 20:08:19

Collingwood won the four points, but the Magpies may have lost something much more important, after beating Gold Coast by 97 points at the MCG on Sunday.

Scott Pendlebury was subbed early in the third quarter after appearing to pick up a knee injury, but in his absence Collingwood had a percentage-boosting 23.11 (149) to 7.10 (52) win.

The Suns were outclassed all day, with the only shining light provided by Gary Ablett, who equalled Greg Williams' single-game record of 53 possessions.

The Magpies' Dale Thomas told Grandstand that the win was pleasing and denied that the Suns had been weak opposition.

"I don't think you can call the opposition weak," he said.

"They are a building side and they've got some fantastic players, once a few of them take that next step they're going to be a really good side."

Some of the Magpies' younger players came to the fore, with three goals to Jamie Elliott and Ben Sinclair and 24 possessions to Jarryd Blair, while players like Tom Young and Kirk Ugle were given valuable time in the middle.

Thomas said it was great for the club that the less experienced players were making the most of their chances.

"These boys have been given the opportunity, the most pleasing thing is each week they are given the opportunity they're taking it," he said.

"They keep improving, and it's a credit to the systems we've got and the staff we've got that fast track these blokes through, and when they are ready to step up and get their first crack at it, they can take it with both hands."

Collingwood was clearly the more threatening side up forward from the earliest stages - Travis Cloke had two first quarter goals, and could have had more with a miss and an out on the full in the opening term.

He ended up with 3.4 for the day, but the Magpies did not need to worry about the misses, with 13 different goalkickers.

Collingwood's dominance was total - the Magpies had 61 forward entries to the Gold Coast's 36, 50 more contested possessions and 30 more clearances for the match.

The outcome was clear from half-time when the home side was 45 points to the good.

Thomas was brilliant for the Magpies, with 32 possessions - 20 of them contested - 11 clearances, five marks, four tackles and three goals.

But on a bad day for the Suns, Ablett's four-quarter performance was quite amazing, racking up 20 more possessions than Thomas as well as nine marks and seven tackles.

He led by example, still running and seeking the ball even in the dying stages.

The other injury concern for the Magpies was Cloke, who left the ground early to go down to the rooms with a groin injury.

Magpies: 23.11 (149) - Sinclair 3, Cloke 3, Elliott 3, Didak 2, Fasolo 2, Thomas 2, Beams, Buckley, Pendlebury, Goldsack, Wellingham, Wood.

Suns: 7.10 (52) - Brown 3, Lynch, Russell, Shaw, Hall.

Cats' Hawkins out with knee injury

Updated May 29, 2012 20:33:51

Geelong coach Chris Scott says the club's decision to submit key forward Tom Hawkins for knee surgery ahead of Saturday's clash with Greater Western Sydney has nothing to do with the opposition.

Hawkins has had surgery to fix an injury he has been dealing with for several weeks.

He is expected to miss only Saturday's match at Kardinia Park, before returning to face Carlton on Friday week.

Scott said the timing had nothing to do with this round's lowly-ranked opponents, but was because Hawkins was noticeably affected against the Western Bulldogs last Friday night.

"By the end of the game, he was really struggling," Scott told reporters on Tuesday.

"It's one of those things. You're confident once you have the procedure done, he'll be ready really quickly.

"Maybe he could have pushed through a little bit, but it would just be delaying the inevitable.

Scott said there were other Cats with minor injuries that would be monitored this week.

But James Kelly, Allen Christensen and Tom Gillies were all in contention to return.

Scott said the Cats' list of available players was growing, with David Wojcinski eligible to come back from his VFL suspension after this weekend, while Daniel Menzel is about to return from a serious knee injury through the VFL.

Scott acknowledged the Giants could find it tough to cope with what is tipped to be wild weather for their first trip to Geelong, particularly given the ongoing stadium redevelopment.

"In the middle of winter, it can be tough for interstate sides, full stop," he said.

"But with half the stadium missing and the wind howling through, it's certainly going to be a little bit different."

But Scott said the Cats' focus would be on areas of their own game that need work.

He noted Geelong were the only winner last round not to have won the contested ball statistic, an area the Cats have consistently been beaten in this season.

Scott said the number of inexperienced players the Cats had fielded this season was a factor in their failure to win enough contested ball, but no excuse - and they expected improvement.

Keeffe the latest Pie with ACL injury

Updated May 28, 2012 19:30:08

Collingwood's disastrous season of knee problems has continued with key defender Lachlan Keeffe requiring surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Keeffe went down with the injury in the final quarter of the Magpies' win over the Crows in Adelaide on Saturday night and is likely lost for the season after he undergoes a knee reconstruction.

The 22-year-old has played all of Collingwood's games so far this season in the 2011 grand finalists' march to a 7-2 record through nine rounds due to the absence of fellow defenders Ben Reid, Chris Tarrant and Nathan Brown.

He is the fourth Magpie to suffer an ACL injury this season after Andrew Krakouer, Brent Macaffer and Luke Ball all went down and ultimately under the knife.

Collingwood director of football Geoff Walsh said it is a tough loss for the football club.

"It's really disappointing for Lachlan and the club, especially considering he's been such a good contributor for us in 2012 so far," he told the Magpies website.

"He'll undergo a knee reconstruction and we expect him to be available to play early in the 2013 season."

Shaw joins Magpies' injury list

Updated May 31, 2012 20:12:52

Collingwood's injury-hit defence has taken another blow, with Heath Shaw to miss Sunday's clash with Gold Coast with a calf injury.

While the Magpies hope the experienced backman will miss just one match, it adds to the unsettled state of a defence which also lost young full-back Lachlan Keeffe for the season with a knee injury.

The good news for the Magpies was Nathan Brown was named at full-back to return from the latest in his series of knee injuries.

But fellow tall defenders Chris Tarrant and Ben Reid were not in the 25-man squad and Brownlow medallist Dane Swan is still sidelined.

Magpies football manager Geoff Walsh says it is uncertain whether Shaw will return for the round 11 Queen's Birthday match with Melbourne.

The struggling Suns dropped ruckman-forward Zac Smith.

Reigning premiers Geelong regained midfield gun James Kelly and named two AFL debutants, Jordan Schroder and Lincoln McCarthy, for Saturday's Kardinia Park meeting with Greater Western Sydney.

As forecast, forward Tom Hawkins will miss the match after minor knee surgery.

The Giants also named a first-gamer, last year's number seven draft pick Nick Haynes.

Essendon welcomed back veteran Dustin Fletcher, fellow backman Kyle Hardingham and small forward Leroy Jetta for Saturday night's MCG encounter with Melbourne, but lost Mark McVeigh (hip).

Midfielder-forward Colin Sylvia was recalled for the winless Demons.

Fremantle made three changes after last Sunday's Derby to West Coast, dropping Jonathon Griffin, Alex Silvagni and Jay van Berlo for Saturday's match with Adelaide and including debutant Hayden Crozier.

Star forward Taylor Walker returns from suspension for the Crows.

Brisbane will find it harder to combat West Coast star ruck pairing Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui after losing Billy Longer (back) for Sunday's Gabba clash, along with Simon Black (knee).

The Eagles lost Luke Shuey (suspension) and Sam Butler (hamstring).

Hawthorn dropped Stephen Gilham, after last round's thrashing by Richmond, adding midfield run by replacing him with first-year player Bradley Hill for Saturday's Launceston meeting with North Melbourne.

The unchanged Kangaroos are still missing injured ruckman Hamish McIntosh.

Sydney hope ruckman Shane Mumford proves his recovery from a back injury at training on Friday, after naming him on their extended bench for Sunday's SCG fixture with Western Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs added defender Easton Wood and forward Ayce Cordy to their squad.

Carlton regained running backman Chris Yarran for Saturday night's Football Park meeting with Port Adelaide, but are still without key defender Lachie Henderson and key forward Jarrad Waite.

Richmond welcomed back Jake Batchelor for Friday night's pivotal match with St Kilda, who lost Jarryn Geary to injury and remain without Sam Fisher.

Jurrah to have scans for leg injury

Updated May 20, 2012 15:11:16

Melbourne forward Liam Jurrah could be facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines after limping off the SCG with a suspected broken ankle.

Jurrah's comeback game from a wrist complaint ended on a sour note in Saturday's 101-point loss to Sydney.

The controversial forward, who faced court on Thursday on assault charges, had 12 possessions for the Demons, who have made a woeful 0-8 start to the season under new coach Mark Neeld.

A Demons spokesman said on Sunday any talk of a lengthy injury lay-off was pure speculation at this stage.

"He's having another scan today," he said.

Medical expert Peter Larkins noted Jurrah was unable to put any weight on his left ankle as he was assisted from the ground after landing awkwardly in a marking contest.

"They (Melbourne) are worried about a broken ankle," Larkins said on the Seven Network.

"Liam Jurrah will have a nasty ankle injury, possibly a break and miss a lot of time."

Collingwood's Brownlow Medallist midfielder Dane Swan (hamstring) and All-Australian defender Ben Reid (thigh) are both likely to be out for a month.

Essendon's veteran defender Dustin Fletcher (groin) is in doubt for Saturday's clash with Greater Western Sydney.

Richmond defender Dylan Grimes (hamstring) is expected to miss a month, although Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said he hoped it was only a minor strain.

Fletcher and Grimes were both subbed off during Saturday's clash at the MCG.

Hawks' Osborne sidelined with ACL injury

Updated May 12, 2012 19:13:29

Hawthorn has confirmed Michael Osborne suffered an anterior cruciate ligament and lateral ligament injury in Friday's victory over Melbourne.

Although scans showed a high grade injury in Osborne's left knee, as it is an incomplete tear the Hawks will seek specialist advice in the week before judging how to treat the injury.

The injury came when Osborne was tackled while attempting a kick in the final quarter of his side's 66-point rout of the Demons at the MCG.

Osborne is the second Hawk to suffer an ACL this season after Alex Woodward injured his knee during the preseason.

The blow comes just as Stephen Gilham made a successful return on Friday after 12 months out with the same injury.

Giants confirm O'hAilpin ACL injury

Updated May 07, 2012 16:38:08

Greater Western Sydney forward Setanta O'hAilpin's season is in doubt after the club announced on Monday that he had suffered a ruptured ACL.

O'hAilpin went down in the third quarter of the Giants' loss to his old side Carlton at Docklands on Sunday afternoon.

Scans on Monday confirmed the damage and the club said the 29-year-old Irishman will meet surgeons later in the week to determine how best to proceed.

The Giants also lost ruckman Dean Brogan to a right arm complaint after he was injured in a contest with Heath Scotland in the 67-point defeat.

Brogan also underwent scans on Monday but the extent of the damage is as yet unknown.

Kennedy continues Eagles' horror injury run

Updated May 01, 2012 15:53:04

West Coast forward Josh Kennedy is set to miss the next three months with scans confirming he requires ankle surgery.

Kennedy suffered the injury after landing awkwardly in a marking contest in Sunday's 10-point victory over Richmond.

Kennedy, 24, returned to the field, but the Eagles claim no further damage was suffered by his efforts to continue.

Kennedy needs a six-to-eight-week recovery period before he can start the process of rebuilding his fitness base.

The key forward's injury is another blow to ladder-leading West Coast, which has already lost All-Australian Mark LeCras (knee) for the season.

Goalsneak Mark Nicoski (hamstring) and winger Andrew Embley (shoulder) are also nursing serious injuries and will not return until the second half of the season.

Kennedy booted 59 goals in 2011, and his absence will put major pressure on fellow key forwards Jack Darling and Quinten Lynch to boost their goalkicking outputs.

The Eagles take on North Melbourne at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

Swans duo cleared of serious injury

Updated April 30, 2012 16:27:32

Injured Sydney duo Lewis Roberts-Thomson and Nick Malceski have been cleared of structural damage and could be fit to face Adelaide at the SCG on Saturday.

Tall utility Roberts-Thomson, who only recently returned from a fractured cheekbone, suffered another facial cut in Sunday's AFL win over Hawthorn.

Dashing half-back flanker Malceski incurred a knock to his knee during the game in Launceston, which Sydney won by 37 points to extend their perfect season record to 5-0.

"LRT's face and also Nick Malceski's knee are both OK structurally, we will just see how they go later in the week," Sydney coach John Longmire told reporters on Monday.

"Hopefully they will both be able to play. One of them might play, I'm not too sure, but will see how we go on Thursday's training session."

Longmire wasn't getting too excited about Sydney's scintillating start to the season, more focused on the next challenge of tackling Adelaide (4-1).

He said the reason behind the Swans' success wasn't rocket science and they needed to maintain the pressure footy that helped dismantle the Hawks in the second half.

Longmire acknowledged the importance of beating a legitimate title contender.

"It's important for players' confidence to be able to do that," Longmire said.

"The players we have brought into the team over the last couple of years, and even this year, are younger players and have been able to play their roles really well."

Cooney not dogged by injury

Updated February 01, 2012 18:01:25

Injury-plagued Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney has given the Western Bulldogs hope he is over the worst of the knee problem which ruined his 2011 AFL campaign.

Cooney played in the team's intra-club hit-out on Wednesday and moved freely, prompting veteran midfielder Daniel Giansiracusa to indicate he was well ahead in his preparation for the coming season.

"I thought he moved all right out there, he's slowly stepped it up as a lot of the guys who had post-season ops from last year (have)," Giansiracusa said.

"It's exciting to see those blokes out there. It's been a grind for them being in rehab but we get a bit of a buzz when we see him out there.

"I think he probably played half of that match practice which is a great sign for us."

He would not say that Cooney was ready for a full season but was confident the club's medical staff had helped him to the point where he could expect to play the majority of games.

"They've been really good and managed his program fantastically well and I think it's about timing with him," he said.

"With a player like that you've just got to make sure you manage him well but from what I saw today he's still got his zip and his spark."

Giansiracusa even said new coach Brendan McCartney had to "slow him down a bit."

He said McCartney was "a new voice" following the sacking of Rodney Eade and the side's game plan had been tinkered with in a bid to improve on last year's performance.

"You'll see that throughout [the preseason cup] and in the early rounds," he said.

"The game is going down that path of (being) very defensive and I think we'll be better in that area.

"But in the end you've got to compete for the footy and if we can win enough of the contested ball I think we're going to go pretty well this year."

Giansiracusa said that the Dogs were planning to beef up the forward line with players including himself, ruckman Will Minson, Jordan Roughead and rookie draft selection Jack Redpath all set to spend time in attack.

"You don't want to look into the past but when we did play our best footy we had six or seven options, guys kicking 30 or 40 goals, and I think you need a spread if you're going to be successful," he said.

Meanwhile, All-Australian defender Brian Lake is moving back into training following a minor calf injury early in the new year.

McCartney said Lake would be playing a lot leaner this season after playing just a handful of games last year due to leg problems.

He said he had used Geelong full-back Matthew Scarlett as a model for Lake, suggesting that at 29, a lighter frame would help him optimise his chances of playing on injury-free.

Embley suffers injury scare

Updated February 03, 2012 23:44:11

West Coast Eagles stalwart Andrew Embley suffered an injury setback at a closed training session on Friday which could sideline him for three to six weeks leading into the new AFL season.

The incident occurred during a match simulation drill at Subiaco Oval, with the 2006 Norm Smith medallist suffering a subluxation of the right shoulder that is likely to keep him out of the preseason cup.

While the injury will be closely monitored in the coming days, it is anticipated Embley will be ready for the start of the season proper.

Judd carrying injury blues already

Updated November 30, 2011 18:24:23

Carlton captain Chris Judd has suffered a shoulder injury at AFL preseason training.

The two-time Brownlow Medallist has had scans on his right shoulder and will meet a specialist on Thursday to decide on the best course of action.

The Blues were unable to provide more detail on the severity of the injury.

But they were confident that even in the worse-case scenario, Judd would be ready for the opening round of the 2012 season.

"The Carlton medical team and Chris decided it was best to take this action now to ensure, no matter what the outcome of the review, that Chris will be available for the 2012 AFL season," the club said in a statement.

The former West Coast premiership skipper was runner-up to Marc Murphy in the Blues' best and fairest count this season, after winning the award in his previous three seasons at Carlton.

McKenna has positive spin on Ablett injury

Updated July 10, 2011 15:12:00

Gary Ablett, Gold Coast's million-dollar man and the face of AFL expansion, could be sidelined for several weeks with a knee injury - but try telling coach Guy McKenna that is a bad thing.

Smiling in the face of another heavy defeat after his side's 70-point shellacking at the hands of Sydney, McKenna is renowned for chalking up his side's now-customary beltings as a rite of passage for his youngsters.

They may well become better footballers for the school of hard knocks that 2011 is proving to be for the Suns, but not even the loss of his superstar captain and the massive ramifications it will bring could get him singing the blues.

"I'd almost see it as a positive," McKenna said.

"He's been so good and he's carried such a workload so what that would do is now allow us to play another young kid and spread the load and see who actually wants to put their hand up and stay the course.

"If there is a beauty about Gary missing a game for us that would be it.

"We get to see and expose another boy that wants to have a crack."

That might be McKenna's top priority at the moment after an embarrassing display from the Suns.

They were held to just 36 points - the lowest total score in Gold Coast's short history.

"Individually and collectively, we lost a bit of respect tonight," he said.

"You're not going to win games of footy with 39 (inside 50s). The spark wasn't quite there, with or without Gaz.

"There was probably half a dozen fellas who flew that flag tonight and that was disappointing.

"With such a young group if only six are putting their hand up, it makes it very, very difficult."

Scans on Monday will reveal the extent of Ablett's knee injury, after he limped from the field during the first quarter.

The 2009 Brownlow Medallist returned during the second term before being substituted off.

AFL medical specialist Peter Larkins told Nine's The Sunday Footy Show that the first-year club's marquee signing was unlikely to be facing a long stint on the sidelines.

"There's no question that's not a major ligament injury," Larkins said.

"It's going to be either meniscus or just bruising in the bone, nothing more dramatic than that.

"It just doesn't seem like much at all."

The Swans have injury concerns of their own after their trip to Metricon Stadium - but theirs came before the match had even started.

Veteran Jude Bolton was an eleventh-hour withdrawal after complaining of knee soreness in the pre-game warm-up.

"When Jude says that you really listen because he's such a tough nut," Sydney coach John Longmire said.

"That doesn't happen too often to a bloke like Jude.

"I'm hoping it's OK."

Longmire will find out if he is after scans on Monday.

Blues lose Curnow to injury

Posted June 24, 2011 18:00:00

Carlton has lost a third player to injury for Sunday's key clash against West Coast at Docklands.

Ed Curnow has a quadriceps muscle injury and he will join Nick Duigan (calf) and Shaun Hampson (knee) as forced omissions.

The Blues have recalled Robbie Warnock and Dennis Armfield and promoted rookie-listed defender Rhys O'Keeffe for his senior debut.

The Eagles made one change, dropping Patrick McGinnity for Eric Mackenzie.

The Blues are third and will further consolidate their top-four berth if they can beat the fifth-placed Eagles.

Geelong made four forced changes for Sunday's home game against Adelaide, but named Jimmy Bartel.

He remains in some doubt because of a concussion during last Saturday night's win over St Kilda.

The Cats have already lost Josh Hunt and Mathew Stokes to suspension, while Nathan Vardy has soreness and Darren Milburn has a calf injury.

They promoted Mitch Brown for his AFL debut and also brought in Tom Hawkins, Tom Gillies and Allen Christensen.

Adelaide's 28-year-old rookie Ian Callinan will also make his AFL debut as Brent Reilly and Richard Tambling were recalled.

Brad Symes has a knee injury and Chris Schmidt and Jack Gunston were dropped.

Port Adelaide left out Daniel Motlop and Michael Pettigrew for Sunday's home game against North Melbourne, with David Rodan and Andrew Moore returning to the team.

Scott McMahon is out of the Kangaroos team because his wife is expecting and Cameron Richardson will replace him.

Jack cleared of serious ankle injury

Posted June 27, 2011 16:37:00

Sydney is hopeful star midfielder Kieren Jack will be fit to play against Adelaide on Saturday after he was cleared of a serious ankle injury.

Jack was subbed off midway through Saturday night's one-goal loss to Collingwood at the Olympic stadium, amid fears he had suffered a recurrence of the injury, which sidelined him for five weeks earlier in the season.

But Swans coach John Longmire says that the 2010 club best and fairest award winner could play against the Crows.

"A lot can happen between now and Thursday. We've got our fingers crossed that he's still a chance," Longmire said.

"He's got to get through the agility session on Thursday before he trains."

Collingwood premiership defender Nathan Brown has suffered a second knee injury, this time on a training camp in Arizona.

Brown, who suffered a season-ending ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury earlier in the year, damaged the patella on his other knee during a hike.

There was no further damage to his reconstructed knee.

Brown was one of four Magpies players on the mid-season trip to Arizona.

Roos lose Pratt to thumb injury

Posted May 31, 2011 21:39:00

Experienced North Melbourne defender Daniel Pratt is expected to be out of AFL action for a month with a fractured thumb.

The backman sustained the injury shortly before half-time in Saturday's agonising one-point loss to Sydney at Docklands, but played out the game.

But he has since had surgery to have a plate and screw inserted.

The Roos have lost another defensive stalwart Michael Firrito to suspension.
