Swans confirm McGlynn will miss grand final

Updated September 25, 2012 17:27:05

Sydney has confirmed Ben McGlynn will miss the grand final due to the hamstring injury suffered three weeks ago.

McGlynn failed a sprint test on Tuesday afternoon, ending his unlikely bid for recovery.

The small forward felt the injury in the fourth quarter of Sydney's qualifying final victory over Adelaide, ending the match in tears on the sideline.

"He did a sprint test before training and whilst he sprinted once, when he sprinted again he had some discomfort so really he failed that test in order to train," Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said.

"Not being able to train today and Thursday means he is unfortunately out of this game."

Swans coach John Longmire, who was spared having to make a difficult decision on Thursday, said everyone at the club felt sorry for McGlynn.

"Since the initial disappointment after the qualifying final against the Crows, Benny has been extremely positive about his recovery," Longmire said.

"He has been in at the club at every available opportunity and I'm positive there is nothing more he could have done to make himself available to play.

"Ben has played a big role in getting us to Saturday's match and everyone at the club is disappointed he can't play," he said.

Crows confirm Petrenko fit for prelim

Updated September 21, 2012 17:24:22

Tenacious Adelaide forward Jared Petrenko has survived a fitness test on his troublesome shoulder and will play in Saturday's preliminary final against Hawthorn.

Petrenko dislocated his right shoulder in the last minutes of Adelaide's semi-final victory against Fremantle last Friday night.

The 22-year-old was given a searching test on Friday behind closed doors before joining his Crows team-mates on their flight to Melbourne.

Adelaide's strategy and innovation coach Dean Bailey said Petrenko was "ready to go" for the knockout MCG final against the Hawks.

"We put him through a pretty vigorous test today, of wrestling and tackling," Bailey told reporters at Adelaide airport.

"Not that we needed too much convincing, but we just needed to see him do it at absolute top speed and we saw that.

Unless something unforeseen happens in the next 24 hours, he'll line-up."

The Crows made one change to their semi-final side, with Andy Otten replacing injured defender Sam Shaw (hamstring).

But Bailey said the Crows could make a late change, with tall forward Josh Jenkins being considered to stretch an under-sized Hawthorn defence.

"It's going to be a sunny day in Melbourne tomorrow so maybe Josh Jenkins might get an opportunity, another tall forward," Bailey said.

" ... Our tall forwards will probably be the question on their (Hawthorn) whiteboard, I would think.

"Those possibilities are still on the table for us before the game."

Bailey dismissed as irrelevant Hawthorn's hot favouritism for the match, but needled the Hawks by suggesting their weekend off may work in Adelaide's favour.

"There is no doubt that the weekend off is deserved when you win a (qualifying) final and it certainly does freshen you up," he said.

"We hope to be on our toes at the start and hopefully they might be a bit rusty at the start.

"We have got to take advantage of that - any opportunity we can, particularly in the early stages, we have got to make sure we get scoreboard pressure.

"The talk out of Melbourne is that they (Hawthorn) have got one hand on the premiership cup ... the bookies have made it very loud and clear about where they see it.

"But once the ball is bounced, it will be who can win it and who can use it and take their opportunities."

Giants confirm O'hAilpin ACL injury

Updated May 07, 2012 16:38:08

Greater Western Sydney forward Setanta O'hAilpin's season is in doubt after the club announced on Monday that he had suffered a ruptured ACL.

O'hAilpin went down in the third quarter of the Giants' loss to his old side Carlton at Docklands on Sunday afternoon.

Scans on Monday confirmed the damage and the club said the 29-year-old Irishman will meet surgeons later in the week to determine how best to proceed.

The Giants also lost ruckman Dean Brogan to a right arm complaint after he was injured in a contest with Heath Scotland in the 67-point defeat.

Brogan also underwent scans on Monday but the extent of the damage is as yet unknown.

Roos confirm Harvey broken thumb

Updated July 12, 2011 16:54:00

A broken thumb will most likely sideline North Melbourne captain Brent Harvey for Sunday's must-win match against Western Bulldogs.

It emerged on Tuesday that the Kangaroos' match record-holder had suffered the injury in Sunday's disastrous 117-point loss to Collingwood at the MCG.

The Kangaroos say Harvey will not need surgery, but admits he is in doubt for the fixture.

It is understood the half-forward will not be ready in time.

The injury is an untimely setback in a horror week for the Kangaroos, who suffered a major blow to their top-eight credentials with their embarrassing performance against the Magpies.

"(He) sustained the injury during an attempted tackle in the third quarter at the MCG," the Kangaroos said in a statement.

"Scans have revealed a bone fragment has been dislodged from his left thumb.

"Surgery will not be required at this stage.

"Harvey's progress will be monitored throughout the week."

The 33-year-old, a hugely-popular figure at Arden Street, broke the club games' record this season.

The four-time All Australian has played 316 matches for North since his 1996 debut.

Harvey only had 12 possessions and kicked two goals in Sunday's rout.

It was the second time this season Kangaroos figures had spoken pre-match about the need to take it up to the Magpies, only to offer very little resistance.

The Kangaroos fell to 12th, a game and a half outside the top eight.

By contrast, the Bulldogs have won their past four games to resurrect their season and are ninth, half a game behind Essendon.

Not surprisingly, North coach Brad Scott vented his frustration during the Monday match review.

"He (Scott) certainly put it on a few blokes who didn't do the things that he asked during the game," Kangaroos forward Drew Petrie said.

"His tone of voice did go up a little bit in yesterday's meeting which is what footy coaches do and players need to respond when that happens.

"Match review did go through a little longer than usual.

"We had a lot to look at to understand why we got beaten so badly."
