Harvey to appeal ban

Updated September 12, 2012 16:07:18

North Melbourne has announced it will appeal the two-match suspension handed down to club stalwart Brent Harvey for striking West Coast's Adam Selwood.

Harvey received a four-week ban for striking Selwood's team-mate Daniel Kerr during the Kangaroos' fiery elimination final against West Coast at Subiaco Oval.

But the Kangaroos have announced they plan to fight the additional two-match ban handed down by the tribunal for striking Selwood, with a hearing set to take place next week.

Should the Kangaroos fail in its appeal, Harvey will miss the opening six weeks of the 2013 season.

"[Missing] six weeks of football at any time in your career is absolutely devastating," Harvey said.

"I'm absolutely shattered I will be missing six games of football for our football club."

The 34-year-old would have received a four-week ban had he not opted to contest the charge.

Lions pick up discarded Harvey

Updated November 03, 2011 19:06:16

Brisbane coach Michael Voss says his newly-appointed assistant coach Mark Harvey still has the fire in his eyes despite being dumped by Fremantle for St Kilda's Ross Lyon.

After missing out on securing Rodney Eade and Peter Sumich for the job, the Lions revealed 46-year-old Harvey would join Adrian Fletcher and Gary O'Donnell as Voss's assistants, as the club looks to lift itself back into the finals in 2012.

"I'm rapt to be involved with the Lions and I'm looking forward to working closely with Michael Voss and the playing group to ensure the team and the club continues to move in the right direction," said Harvey, who won three premierships as a player with Essendon.

Voss says the Lions had been searching "far and wide for the right man" and had to go as far as Perth to find him.

He says both he and key forward Johnathan Brown will benefit from Harvey's vast experience and knowledge.

There were some concerns Harvey, the fourth head coach sacked to bob up in an assistant's role, might have lost some of the drive and desire after Fremantle ruthlessly cut him loose with a year left on his contract.

"Mark had to work out where he was at after what happened to him (at Fremantle) and if the passion and drive were still there for him," Voss said.

"But when we met, he hardly stopped talking about football - from our list to who and what we need and what we should be focusing on.

"He'd clearly done his homework and also had that fire in his eyes to keep going."

Apart from being a good sounding board and a bonus in the coach's box, Voss says Harvey will also help Brown become a better player.

"For a guy like Brownie to be able to bounce off someone of Harvey's experience, who was able to play a key position and for some of our younger brigade, it's going to be very worthwhile for them," Voss said.

"He can be a set of eyes who can look at things and offer a different angle. That's going to be very important."

Harvey will link with the Lions for their preseason camp at Noosa Heads next week.

Harvey gets indemnity over pool death

Guy Stayner

Updated November 16, 2011 14:27:32

Former Fremantle coach Mark Harvey has been granted indemnity against future prosecution or civil penalties over the death of a child in a backyard pool.

Three-year-old Lauren Harris drowned in 2008, in a backyard pool at an Essendon property owned by Mr Harvey.

The certificate means his testimony cannot be used against him in future prosecutions or civil proceedings.

Lawyer Ann McGee told the court that under cross examination, Mr Harvey's answers could be self-incriminating.

She said Mark Harvey's testimony could lead to charges of perjury, conduct endangering life and manslaughter by negligent omission.

The court heard Mark Harvey's evidence will be contradicted by building inspector Arthur Smith.

Mr Smith will testify Mark Harvey received a building order to fix an unsafe pool fence in 2004.

"Mr Harvey asserts he did not. Arthur Smith says that he did," Ms Magee said.

A retrospective application to indemnify Donna Harvey against future prosecution was rejected on the grounds that she was not liable for prosecution.

Ms Magee tried unsuccessfully to have the applications for indemnity heard in-camera.

She argued given the high profile of her client there was significant media interest in the case and the application for indemnity could be misinterpreted and misreported.

She said Mark Harvey was not seeking to be excused from the court proceedings.

It is believed the child climbed over a bluestone barbecue that was less than a metre high, to access the pool area.

The child drowned three months after her parents complained about the safety of the fence.

Mr and Mrs Harvey approved the installation of trellis at the Harris's expense, but it was not installed.

Roos confirm Harvey broken thumb

Updated July 12, 2011 16:54:00

A broken thumb will most likely sideline North Melbourne captain Brent Harvey for Sunday's must-win match against Western Bulldogs.

It emerged on Tuesday that the Kangaroos' match record-holder had suffered the injury in Sunday's disastrous 117-point loss to Collingwood at the MCG.

The Kangaroos say Harvey will not need surgery, but admits he is in doubt for the fixture.

It is understood the half-forward will not be ready in time.

The injury is an untimely setback in a horror week for the Kangaroos, who suffered a major blow to their top-eight credentials with their embarrassing performance against the Magpies.

"(He) sustained the injury during an attempted tackle in the third quarter at the MCG," the Kangaroos said in a statement.

"Scans have revealed a bone fragment has been dislodged from his left thumb.

"Surgery will not be required at this stage.

"Harvey's progress will be monitored throughout the week."

The 33-year-old, a hugely-popular figure at Arden Street, broke the club games' record this season.

The four-time All Australian has played 316 matches for North since his 1996 debut.

Harvey only had 12 possessions and kicked two goals in Sunday's rout.

It was the second time this season Kangaroos figures had spoken pre-match about the need to take it up to the Magpies, only to offer very little resistance.

The Kangaroos fell to 12th, a game and a half outside the top eight.

By contrast, the Bulldogs have won their past four games to resurrect their season and are ninth, half a game behind Essendon.

Not surprisingly, North coach Brad Scott vented his frustration during the Monday match review.

"He (Scott) certainly put it on a few blokes who didn't do the things that he asked during the game," Kangaroos forward Drew Petrie said.

"His tone of voice did go up a little bit in yesterday's meeting which is what footy coaches do and players need to respond when that happens.

"Match review did go through a little longer than usual.

"We had a lot to look at to understand why we got beaten so badly."

Harvey hopeful of Dockers improvement

Posted July 7, 2011 15:41:00

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey hopes the impending return of several key players will transform the Dockers into a major force for the remainder of the season.

The sixth-placed Dockers have defied one of the worst injury runs in the league this year to post a creditable 8-6 win-loss record heading into this weekend's bye.

The recent returns of Alex Silvagni, Roger Hayden and Antoni Grover from injury have helped ease the load, while the squad will be further bolstered when midfielder Michael Barlow slots back in for next week's away clash with Sydney.

And with ruckman Aaron Sandilands (toe), defender Nick Suban (leg) and veteran Adam McPhee (knee) also nearing returns, Harvey expects his team to show vast improvement in the remaining eight matches of the home-and-away season.

"We've had our difficulty with availability and, hopefully, we can get somewhere near our best side out on the park in the next couple of weeks, so anything can happen," Harvey told Perth radio station 6PR.

"I'd like to think we've got a lot of improvement in our side in the coming weeks.

"We've put ourselves in a situation where we can control hopefully where we finish.

"We've got an important phase so all the players understand how important it is for us to make sure that mentally and physically we're ready for what lies ahead.

"As it stands, we haven't beaten any sides above us at the moment, so that's a real area of need for us."

Emerging Dockers star Nat Fyfe says the club's bye has come at the perfect time, allowing the team's sore bodies to get a well-earned rest.

"At the start of the season, when we had the bye, we probably didn't really need it but now that the body is a little bit sore and the mind needs refreshing, it's really important to get it now," he said.

"Last time we had the bye, we lost the week after so this time it's a bit different.

"We've got a little bit more training to do. I think we're training on the weekend but, as I said, this time we really needed the bye, we really needed the break so we'll be fresh coming up against Sydney next week."

Thirteen teams are still in the hunt for the finals, but Fyfe claims he has barely looked at where everyone stands on the ladder.

"Obviously, every win is really important, but I myself don't really know what the exact points are and where we sit exactly," he said.

"We've just got to get a win against Sydney next week and try our hardest for the rest of the season."

Fyfe has grown three centimetres and put on around 14 kilograms since being snared by the Dockers with pick number 20 in the 2009 national draft.

That pick has turned out to be an absolute steal, with the midfielder/forward fast establishing himself as one of the most important players at Fremantle.

The 19-year-old has averaged 25.6 possessions a match this season and has also booted 14 goals to put himself in line for All-Australian selection.

Kangas keen to stand up for Harvey

Posted June 4, 2011 11:19:00

North Melbourne's clash with Adelaide is all about putting on a good show for Kangaroos skipper Brent Harvey, ruckman Todd Goldstein says.

North have posted only two wins from nine matches but they are determined to triumph on Sunday at Docklands as Harvey celebrates his 311th game, equalling Glenn Archer's club record.

Harvey has been under fire from radio commentator Dermott Brereton for being selfish near goal.

But Goldstein says Harvey sets a great example and is one of the game's finest captains.

"We always know he'll do anything for the club," Goldstein said.

"The boys definitely want to put on a good show to show our support for him."

Goldstein said five-time club champion Harvey deserved praise for taking charge.

"You often need a player who is going to take the crucial shot at a crucial time and not just pass the buck on to someone else," Goldstein said.

"That little handball over the top often does get blocked or smothered.

"Quite often it is safer to take the shot yourself. It's a credit to 'Boomer' that he does want to take the pressure and kick the goal that we need.

"He has been an unbelievable captain. It's hard to judge not knowing how the other captains go about it, but definitely 'Boomer' would have to be up there."

Goldstein says 14th-placed North are heading in the right direction despite a one-point loss to Sydney last week.

"We've had three or four close losses. Definitely we can string a few wins together," Goldstein said.

The former Oakleigh junior has been playing more than 90 per cent of game time while the Kangaroos attempt to nurse Hamish McIntosh back to full fitness following an Achilles injury.

Goldstein is third in the league for hitouts with 32.1 per game and had a career-high 26 possessions in North's win over Melbourne in round eight.

McIntosh is due to play his first game for 2011 in about a month.

"Hamish and I have always wanted to be the best ruck combination in the league," said Goldstein, 22.

"We know we can work pretty well together.

"I can do it on my own if need be, but I'm hoping Hamish can come back soon and give me a bit of a chop-out."

Since missing round one with a virus, Goldstein has relished his heavy workload.

"It has been my most consistent year," he said.

Goldstein nominated Crows midfielder Scott Thompson, who's averaging 29 disposals per game, as a key player the Kangaroos must counter.

The Crows have lost Taylor Walker (knee) and Brodie Smith (hip) and regain wingman Bernie Vince, while the Kangaroos will be without backmen Daniel Pratt (thumb) and Michael Firrito (suspended).

Adelaide are 13th and Crows coach Neil Craig is desperately chasing a win, admitting he faces "huge pressure" to retain his job.
