Hawks hang on against gutsy Crows

Updated September 22, 2012 20:24:10

Hawthorn avoided one of the biggest preliminary final upsets in AFL history, outlasting a brave Adelaide by five points at the MCG to setup a grand final against Sydney.

The Hawks, who against the odds trailed by seven points at quarter-time and five at the main break, fought back to take a 16-point three-quarter time lead before a dramatic charge put the Crows in front by a point with just over five minutes left.

But an inspirational, late performance by Cyril Rioli and a match-saving tackle by Ben Stratton helped the Hawks avoid a repeat of last year's preliminary final pain and hang on for a heart-stopping 13.19 (97) to 14.8 (92) triumph.

The Hawks surrendered a 17-point advantage at the final change to lose by three points to Collingwood in last year's grand final qualifier.

Memories of that horror night would have come flooding back when Jason Porpylzia kicked true to put Adelaide within five points after Ryan Schoenmakers' ill-discipline reversed a free kick.

Substitute Graham Johncock then booted the Crows into a narrow lead only for Rioli to convert a goal after taking a vital contested mark deep inside 50 only seconds later.

The Hawks superstar then used his speed to setup Lance Franklin (3.5) for his third goal that pushed the margin back out to 11 points.

In the true spirit of Adelaide's fighting performance, Crows speedster Patrick Dangerfield took the game on in his attacking 50 half only to be hauled down by a crucial tackle by Stratton.

Taylor Walker (4.0), who along with forward partner Kurt Tippett (4.1) had a massive impact on the contest, kept things interesting until the final siren when he nailed his fourth goal of the game.

But with only 16 seconds remaining the visitors fell agonisingly short of a boilover that would have surpassed Adelaide's preliminary final heroics against the Bulldogs in 1997.

More follows.

Hawthorn: 13.19 (97) - L Franklin 3, J Gunston 2, L Breust 2, C Rioli 2, C Young, S Burgoyne, L Shiels, M Suckling

Adelaide: 14.8 (92) - K Tippett 4, T Walker 4, R Henderson, G Johncock, J Porplyzia, R Sloane, B Smith, N van Berlo

Petrenko hopes to play against Hawks

Updated September 17, 2012 15:55:51

Adelaide forward Jared Petrenko trained with the Crows on Monday and remains optimistic about lining up in Saturday's preliminary final against Hawthorn at the MCG.

Petrenko dislocated his right shoulder during Adelaide's semi-final win against Fremantle.

Crows assistant coach Mark Bickley says the team would miss his energy and aggression if he is ruled out.

"He's important, not just to structure but also his attack on the opposition is really good and he's fervent in his pressure," Bickley said.

"Having said that if it's not Jared we've got plenty of other options for people to be able to play that role."

Petrenko was close to tears after the Dockers game, in clear discomfort and fearing for his ability to play on in the finals.

The 22-year-old - who has kicked 16 goals for the season so far - incurred the injury in the final minutes of the match.

But Bickley said Petrenko was still optimistic of taking his place against Hawthorn.

"He is quite buoyant in terms of his chance," Bickley said.

"Obviously it's going to be tough for him to get up, and the style of play he plays, he's a pretty rugged type.

"But at the same time he's also a very professional and very determined young man."

Bickley said the club's medical staff will have the final say.

"You take a little bit of responsibility as the player in being honest about how you're feeling," he said.

"But it's not like we'll play him without testing it at some stage so I'd suggest later in the week if he was still in the mix that he would have to prove to the coaching staff that it is capable of standing up."

Adelaide's structure is already under serious stress in the back six following the first two rounds of the finals series.

The Crows have lost two key defenders - Rising Star winner Daniel Talia (broken arm) and Sam Shaw (hamstring) - for the season.

This weekend Adelaide will have to find a way to stop Hawthorn's stellar forward line, with the likes of Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead, Cyril Rioli, Jack Gunston and David Hale providing a stern test for any AFL defence.

Crows defender Andy Otten has played only five games in 2012, but he has already been identified as a likely replacement for Shaw.

"We are delving pretty deep into our key position stocks in key defenders," Bickley said.

"And we have lost a couple with injury late this year.

"So to be able to have a player in the calibre of Andy - had finals experience before, bigger body and has proven that he can stand up and play on a big stage - that is probably a fortunate position to be in."

Dockers don't hold back against Demons

Updated September 02, 2012 14:17:02

Fremantle cruised to a 61-point win over Melbourne at Subiaco Oval, but in doing so ensured they would be on the road in the first week of the finals.

The Dockers had little trouble accounting for Melbourne with a 14.17 (101) to 5.10 (40) victory to finish the home-and-away season with a 14-8 record and in seventh position, but that means an elimination final against reigning premiers Geelong at the MCG on Saturday night.

If Fremantle had lost to Melbourne or failed to win by 13 or more points they would have remained in eighth position and have stayed in Perth to play West Coast next week.

But the first western derby final remains elusive to the Western Australian football public.

The victory was comfortable for Fremantle with captain Matthew Pavlich kicking two goals to move to 62 for the season and equal Geelong's Tom Hawkins as the league's leading goalkicker.

The only thing that could stop him sharing his first Coleman Medal would be if Jack Riewoldt kicks four or more goals against Port Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday.

Small forward Hayden Ballantyne booted three for Fremantle with ruck pair Jonathon Griffin and Aaron Sandilands as well as Tendai Mzungu kicking two goals each.

Michael Barlow racked up 32 possessions, David Mundy 31, Nat Fyfe 30, Michael Johnson 24, Paul Duffield 23, Clancee Pearce 23 and Stephen Hill 22.

But the news was not all good for Fremantle with likely All-Australian defender Luke McPharlin subbed out of the match in the third quarter with a hamstring injury.

His battle to be fit could give Antoni Grover the chance to end his career in the finals after announcing his retirement during the week, although Alex Silvagni is another option with both playing well at WAFL level.

Melbourne provided little opposition for Fremantle kicking just four goals in the first three quarters, and then just one more in the last to end its disappointing first season under new coach Mark Neeld with a 4-18 record.

Jack Fitzpatrick kicked two goals for the Demons while Colin Sylvia picked up 25 possessions, Jack Grimes 23, Jack Trengove 21, Tom McDonald 18 and Jordie McKenzie 18.

Fremantle: 14.17 (101) - Ballantyne 3, Mzungu 2, Pavlich 2, Sandilands 2, Griffin 2, Mzungu 2, Mundy, Mayne, Walters

Melbourne: 5.10 (40) - Fitzpatrick 2, Jones, Blease, Sellar

Hill unlikely starter against Bombers

Updated June 21, 2012 14:40:36

Fremantle is set to make at least four changes for Saturday's clash with Essendon in Perth after midfielder Stephen Hill's bid to recover from an ankle injury fell short.

Hill tweaked his ankle early in the June 9 match against Richmond, but battled on through the pain to play a crucial role in the two-goal win.

But last week's bye was not enough for Hill to sufficiently recover from the injury, with the Dockers confirming the 22-year-old is unlikely to face the Bombers.

Hill's absence comes at a bad time for the Dockers, who also need to find replacements for ruckman Aaron Sandilands (turf toe), defender Zac Dawson (knee) and goalsneak Hayden Ballantyne (suspended).

Kepler Bradley and Zac Clarke will battle it out to replace Sandilands, while Alex Silvagni is set to come in for Dawson.

Michael Walters, Jayden Pitt, Nick Lower and Paul Duffield are all in the selection mix for the other two spots, but midfielder Anthony Morabito will spend at least another week in the WAFL building match fitness.

The Dockers sit 11th on the table with a 6-5 record, while the Bombers have an 8-3 return, but enter Saturday's match on the back of two straight losses.

Four more charges laid against Demon Jurrah

By Ruby Jones

Updated May 17, 2012 22:26:47

Four more charges have been laid against AFL star Liam Jurrah but he will be able to play in a match in Darwin just two days before he goes to a committal hearing.

The Melbourne Demons player was already facing charges of causing serious harm and being armed with an offensive weapon in an alleged melee.

The charges relate to an alleged machete attack on a man at Little Sisters town camp in Alice Springs in March.

The victim of the alleged attack is his 35-year-old cousin.

In an Alice Springs court today, the prosecution added four charges of aggravated assault to the case against Jurrah.

These relate to the same evening of the alleged incident but involve four different people.

Jurrah, 23, appeared before the court via a video link from Melbourne.

Magistrate John Birch has set July 23 as a date for the committal hearing, at which time Jurrah will have to appear before the court in person.

Defence lawyer John McBride applied for a variation of bail conditions so Jurrah can play for Melbourne in a match against Port Adelaide in Darwin on July 21.

After earlier saying he did not usually vary bail conditions for personal matters, Mr Birch later approved the application.

The magistrate ordered Jurrah to travel to Alice Springs immediately after the match for the committal hearing.

Jurrah hails from Yuendumu, 260 kilometres north west of Alice Springs.

People from Jurrah's Warlpiri group have been involved in a bitter and sometimes bloody feud between two families that has divided the community.

Appeals lodged against Optus copyright ruling

By court reporter Jamelle Wells, wires

Updated February 10, 2012 19:05:48

Telstra and Australia's two biggest football codes have appealed against a Federal Court ruling that lets Optus record matches shown on free-to-air television and replay them to customers.

In a landmark Federal Court case earlier this month, Optus was found to have not breached copyright over Telstra's lucrative deal with the NRL and AFL to broadcast live matches on the internet.

Customers using Optus's TV Now are able to record free-to-air television from their smartphone or computer and watch it with a delay as little as two minutes.

In his ruling, Justice Steven Rares found TV Now users had themselves made the recording of the matches, similar to when a person used a video or digital recorder.

He also found the recordings were being made for private and domestic use and that users were responsible for making available the recording, not Optus.

This was allowed under an exception in the Copyright Act.

But in a joint-submission lodged on Friday, Telstra and the AFL said Justice Rares erred in his judgment.

"The judge erred in finding that the service that Optus TV Now offers the user is substantially no different from a VCR or DVR," the notice of appeal said.

The NRL has filed a separate submission, with a hearing set down for April 18.

Media analysts have said the Federal Court ruling makes multi-million-dollar exclusive rights deals worthless.

Telstra has exclusive online broadcast rights for both the AFL and NRL.

The ruling could seriously reduce the NRL's next television deal as the code prepares to renegotiate its broadcasting rights.

Healy withdraws legal action against Roosters

Posted June 21, 2011 15:20:00

Former North Adelaide Football Club coach Daniel Healy has discontinued a civil action against the club.

Healy had claimed the Roosters breached his contract when he was dismissed last year.

He coached the SANFL club from November 2008 until his sacking last September.

Healy mounted civil proceedings in the Adelaide District Court, saying the club breached the three-year term of his contract.

He said he was owed salary and benefits and his coaching reputation had been damaged.

The club argued Healy failed with coaching, player recruitment and development duties.

It said he brought the club into disrepute during an incident at the Stirling Hotel three weeks before his sacking.

The matter was due to return to court but the action was withdrawn earlier in the month.

Healy is now an assistant coach with the AFL side Port Adelaide.

Suns can't blame travel against Eagles

Updated June 3, 2011 17:38:00

Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna says there will be no excuses for his fledgling team to fall flat in Saturday's clash with West Coast at Subiaco.

McKenna claims the travel factor and last week's taxing game against Geelong should have little bearing on the match.

The Suns, who led Geelong at half-time last week before losing by 66 points, are rank underdogs against the Eagles but McKenna says there will be a price to pay if his team is not competitive.

"Certainly (we) wouldn't use travel as an excuse," McKenna said.

"I don't think any other clubs do and we shouldn't start either.

"With a young group, I think what that does is provide them with the opportunity (to shine).

"Now if they don't step up and grab their opportunity, well they know they're out of the side fairly quickly.

"We would have had 25 debutants after this weekend.

"Well, we'll play the 26th and 27th (if players don't perform).

"If you want to stay in the side, you understand how we expect you to play.

"And if you don't, you'll be quickly out of it. I don't think there'll be a letdown (despite the big build-up to the Geelong game last week), that's for sure."

McKenna says contact with West Coast coach and former premiership team-mate John Worsfold had been somewhat limited in the lead-up to the game.

"We went to the breakfast (function) this morning and I understand he's got (his) game face on, because it's probably the first social function I've seen him actually talk at and not eat," McKenna said.

"He loves his food. So he did his bit and got up and left before he had breakfast.

"If he's getting up and leaving his breakfast behind, he's deadly serious, so look out."

Gold Coast would be eager to celebrate skipper Gary Ablett's 200th game with a win, but McKenna says he will not use the milestone as a prime motivating tool for his troops.

"Why would I expect the boys to pull the rabbit out of the hat just for Gaz and a milestone?" he said.

"We'd expect the boys to be pulling the rabbit out of the hat every game they play and that's what we expect.

"Look, it's special for Gary and we're going to try to make it special.

"But I don't think it's going to be the motivation that tips us into playing 120 minutes of great footy."

McKenna hoped the inclusion of former Collingwood big man Josh Fraser to join Zac Smith in the ruck would help counter the influence of dominant Eagles duo Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui.

"Would we have liked him to play maybe one or two games in the seconds? We probably do," McKenna said of Fraser, returning from an ankle injury.

"But against that ruck combination, we're happy to bring him back in, because what that does is help the load of Zac, helps the load of Tommy Nicholls.

"And I don't think it was fair on Charlie Dixon and even Tommy Lynch to try and ruck up against those two boys."

Lions continue resurgence against Crows

Updated May 29, 2011 16:24:00

Brisbane continued its AFL recovery with its second win on the bounce, triumphing by 40 points over the Adelaide Crows at Football Park.

Wily Brisbane goalsneak Ashley McGrath triggered a turnaround to earn Brisbane a 15.11 (101) to 8.13 (61) victory, kicking four goals alongside Todd Banfield's three, while Mitch Clark capped his dominant display with two majors.

McGrath changed the tune of the contest with a second stanza cameo that stole momentum as the Lions banked consecutive wins after seven straight losses.

"Ash was fantastic today and our young guys are starting to really grow in stature and put in some consistent performances," veteran midfielder Simon Black told Grandstand.

"A lot of them are around the 50-game mark; I remember [former coach] Leigh Matthews used to say if you play 50 games you start to feel really confident out on the field and should be contributing regularly, and that's why our young guys are starting to do so well.

"Obviously it's only our second win for the year but there's some good signs there at the moment.

The Crows had flown to an early lead with recalled forward Taylor Walker among the goal scorers in Adelaide's 3.2 to 1.3 opening term.

But McGrath then kicked three goals and set another up in a devastating 17 minute which stunned the 34,583-strong crowd.

McGrath slipped Graham Johncock for a personal haul punctuated by a creative handball to set team-mate Luke Power up for goal - his third gave Brisbane the lead for the first time.

McGrath's hot streak sparked a 13-goal-to-three period of sustained Brisbane dominance over an Adelaide outfit which wilted alarmingly when challenged.

"We had a good second quarter and come in at half-time relatively confident," Black said.

"We knew that Adelaide would come at us in the third quarter but we had a real focus in the third quarter to come out and at least match them in contested footy and I thought we did that really well.

"That set up the win for us today, our second win for the year. It's fantastic to be able to come down here and get a win."

The Lions grabbed a defining 34-point buffer at the last change and McGrath underlined his match-swinging ways with the opening goal of the final quarter which settled the result.

Brisbane's win was just reward for the feats of roaming utility Clark who collected 23 disposals and eight marks, prolific ball winner Black (31 possessions) and defensive linchpin Daniel Merrett, who kept Kurt Tippett goal-less in a commanding performance.

The Crows, their season tattered with six losses from nine starts, lost Walker who sat out the second half with an ankle injury.

Adelaide's woes would have been worse without the efforts of its prime midfielders Scott Thompson (35 disposals) and Richard Douglas (33 touches).

The Lions host Sydney next Saturday while Adelaide travels to meet North Melbourne on Sunday.

Brisbane: 15.11 (101) - A McGrath 4, T Banfield 3, B Retzlaff 2, M Clark 2, D Rich, J O'Brien, L Power, T Collier

Adelaide: 8.13 (61) - B Smith, C Knights, M Wright, N van Berlo, P Dangerfield, R Henderson, S Jacobs, T Walker

Great Flinders to celebrate 100 years with match against Port Lincoln

One hundred years of football will be celebrated in the Great Flinders league this weekend as their Centenary celebrations kick off with the association match against their nemesis Port Lincoln.

The home team will run out under the tutelage of first time Great Flinders coach Craig 'Ferret' Curtis, who has proudly played for the side over many years.

Captain is George Pedler, who takes on the role 54 years after his grandfather Vin Pedler led Great Flinders.

George says it's a proud time for the club.

"Oh there's a huge amount of pride I mean the guernsey has been worn by a lot of great players and a lot of those will be present so there's yeah a real honour and it's great to be a part of it," he says.

The Great Flinders captain says that the side trained very well with all players keen to line up and represent their team.

Vice captain is Daniel Wedd who will be part of the difficult to penetrate Great Flinders backline, joined by Tysan 'Rooster' Mickan, James 'Flog' Pedler and past Eyre Peninsula representative Mark Habner.

Some tough courageous footballers will be lining up in the middle with George, Scott 'Jock' Blacker (who also just celebrated a birthday - happy days), possibly Jimmy Chard as well as the very good, fast, electrifying footballer with a proud Port Lincoln history - Joseph Burgoyne.

In the Great Flinders forward line we'll see the strong hands of Jim Holman who's been playing in the maroon since high school and has been performing well up forward for Ramblers this season, as well as dual Mail Medallist Hayden Parker.

But while the passion and will to win is strong in the Great Flinders camp, a whisper has come in that the Port Lincoln team selection and guernsey 'presentation' night was flat, so the question remains - can they lift up in order to take it to their rivals?

Port Lincoln sporting correspondent Bluey Dunn thinks they can.

Bluey was a representative of the Port Lincoln side in 1950 and says that he'll never forget playing against Great Flinders , despite being severely concussed in the match.

"Any person picked for Port Lincoln should be proud of that position to play, should defend it to death and get stick into it... so you Port Lincoln boys, we're expecting a lot out of you, no shirking it, get into it, get stuck into it and win this game," he says.

Port Lincoln will line up with two captains, Andrew 'the wall' Jericho at centre half back and co-captain the 'gladiator' Matthew Goodwin (also known as the Scarlett Pimpernel by Bluey) with vice captain Craig Reincke in full back.

Bluey says the Port Lincoln side will line up with five Mail Medallists on the ground.

"They can all be used as on-ballers, mid-fielders or they can push forward or go back and that starts with Wes Bilney, then Harry Miller (from Hawthorn), Matthew Keatley, Matthew Godwin, Murray Kelsh who can play in the upper half forward even be put back in the pocket or around the centre bounce, and of course you'll have the rucks being led by Jesse Kemp who's in remarkable form," Bluey says.

In late news, Yoey Wagner is believed to have sustained a injury to his rear end in a staple gun incident on Friday afternoon. Whether or not that will keep him out of the side, we'll have to wait and see.

The games kick off at Cummins oval at 9.30am with the Under 13s playing four 12 minute quarters. Trophy presentation will be held after the game next to the change rooms.

The Under 15s will play 2 x 15 minute halves and begins at 10.30 with Great Flinders Vs Lincoln Districts, at 11.10 it's Lincoln Districts Vs Lincoln City, then at 11.50 it's Lincoln City Vs Great Flinders.

The Under 15s trophy presentation will take place next to the change rooms after the games.

The Under 17s begins at 12.30pm, again playing 2 x 15 minute halves with Great Flinders Vs Lincoln Districts, at 1.10 Lincoln Districts Vs Lincoln City and then at 1.50pm Great Flinders Vs Lincoln City. Again the trophy presentation will be held after the games at the change rooms.

The League match will kick off at 2.30 when the teams line up for the Australian National Anthem, the coin toss and a short speech to mark the occasion.

At around 2.45pm the A Grade game will begin, playing four 20 minute quarters plus time on. At the end of the match the trophy presentation will take place on the oval.

A display will also be open for viewing in the Cummins Bowling Club during the day, with memorabillia and photographs of Great Flinders history.

Check out what's happening in the Great Flinders Vs Port Lincoln netball games in the report by Brooke Neindorf.

After the games are played, there is an evening event at the Cummins town hall with the auction of the heritage guernsey's, guest speaker former Adelaide Crow Shaun Rehn and more.

To check out what the weather will be doing, take a look at the four day forecast on our website. At this stage looks like wet and windy.

Wudinna will be hosting a round robin interleague game between them, Eastern Eyre and Far West this weekend.

In a Mortlock Shield type of day, the gates will open at 8.30am with a bacon and egg breakfast available.

Their matches begin with the Under 15s at 9.30 with Mid West taking on Eastern Eyre, followed by Eastern Eyre Vs Far West at 10.20 and Far West Vs Mid West at 11.10.

The Under 13s will play at the Wudinna Area School Oval beginning at 10am with Mid West Vs Eastern Eyre, 11am is Eastern Eyre Vs Far West and 12 noon is Far West Vs Mid West.

The Under 17s will be on the main football oval again from 12 noon with Mid West Vs Eastern Eyre, 1pm for Eastern Eyre Vs Far West at 2.35pm for Far West Vs Mid West with medal presentations for the junior teams at 2.35pm.

The League begins at 2.40pm with Mid West Vs Eastern Eyre, at 3.40 it's Eastern Eyre Vs Far West, followed by Far West Vs Mid West at 4.40pm with Medal Presentations at 5.30pm.

Best of luck to all teams competing.

Young Hawk rises against Saints

Posted May 17, 2011 10:43:00

A sterling performance against St Kilda has seen Hawthorn midfielder Shane Savage earn the AFL's Rising Star nomination for round eight.

Savage had a career-high 26 disposals, 14 marks, five tackles and two goals in the 30-point win over the struggling Saints at the MCG on Sunday.

The 20-year-old has played every game for the Hawks this season after a 2010 campaign in which he was named an emergency eight times and made no senior appearances.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson praised Savage for his work ethic.

"This nomination is a great nod to a young kid who has shown much improvement over the course of his three years at this club," Clarkson said.

"Shane has stepped up this year and has injected a great deal of pace, energy and footy nous into the team."

Cats craving test against new yardstick

Posted May 10, 2011 15:47:00

Collingwood defender Harry O'Brien says not much time will be spent analysing recent wins over a Geelong side which has clearly changed its game plan, as the two AFL superpowers prepare to clash at the MCG on Friday night.

A 22-point Magpies win in round 19 last year, followed by their 41-point romp in the preliminary final, led to a widespread belief Geelong's golden era was over.

Instead, the Cats have adapted under new coach Chris Scott and sit alongside the Magpies as the only unbeaten teams after seven rounds.

Friday night's blockbuster will be the match of the season so far and O'Brien said the Pies can take some confidence from their recent performances against the Cats.

"You can take out some confidence, they had the measure over us for probably four or five years," O'Brien said.

"Last year, for us to be able to beat them was quite a big thing for us.

"You do take a lot out of that, but we haven't analysed last year's games because we know they've tweaked a few things.

"But you can go into a game with confidence, knowing you can beat that team."

One potential issue for Collingwood is it is coming off the bye, a problem for several teams this season.

"We can't go by what other teams have done and I know teams haven't won games after the break," O'Brien said.

"But if I take myself back (to) last year, we started to gain our momentum after the mid-season break.

"I know it's a bit earlier, but we'll soon find out."

Captain Nick Maxwell, midfielder Ben Johnson and defender Chris Tarrant are all coming off injuries, but O'Brien said the only definite exclusion he knew of would be ruckman Darren Jolly.

"He's our number one ruckman, but we think Cameron Wood is an adequate ruckman," O'Brien said of Jolly's absence with a recurring knee injury.

"He'll be trying his hardest with this opportunity he has to take the next step in his football development and add something to his team."

The Cats are expected to field a near full-strength side, with captain Cameron Ling (hamstring) and forward Steve Johnson (shoulder) both likely to return from injury.

Ruckman Brad Ottens should also play, despite being subbed off with soreness in their most recent match.

Scott said the match will test just how good his side really is.

He said the Magpies' game plan had not changed much since last year and the Cats, like the rest of the competition, were working to catch up.

But he said even if they did not win this time, they expected to be much-improved by the time they met again in the final home and away round.

"I don't think we're playing our best football, I firmly believe that's still to come. But I think we're in pretty good shape to test ourselves," he said.

"But this is not the be-all and end-all.

"We'll put our best foot forward and we're desperate to win the game, but whatever happens we've got the big picture in mind."
