Dawes wants to be a Demon

Updated October 12, 2012 17:20:50

Collingwood premiership forward Chris Dawes wants to be traded to Melbourne.

The Demons had been among several clubs, also including the Western Bulldogs, Brisbane and Carlton, vying to attract the 24-year-old.

Dawes' manager Ben Niall said on Friday the 71-gamer had settled on Melbourne as his preferred destination.

Dawes' relationship with Demons coach Mark Neeld, a former Collingwood assistant, was a factor.

"If you go somewhere where you know your boss a bit better obviously you feel more comfortable," Niall told the AFL website, adding the idea of playing a key role at a rebuilding club also appealed.

"He came into Collingwood which already had a terrific culture in place. Now he can go into a club and be responsible for building a culture and standards, that really appealed to Chris."

The Demons now need to come up with a trade to satisfy the Magpies, where Dawes remains under contract.

Official paperwork has not been lodged with the AFL as of 5pm AEDT Friday evening.

Demon Howe to face blood-wiping charge

Updated July 23, 2012 16:40:50

Melbourne forward Jeremy Howe has been sent directly to the AFL tribunal over a charge of wiping his blood on an opponent's shorts.

Howe cannot make an early guilty plea, and must front the tribunal over the unusual offence.

The match review panel has charged Howe with wiping blood from his knee on Port Adelaide player Tom Jonas' shorts in the Demons' loss to Port in Darwin at the weekend.

Geelong defender Matthew Scarlett has been offered a one-match ban for striking Essendon's Corey Dell'Olio.

If he accepts the suspension, he will miss the Cats' clash with Adelaide at Kardinia Park on Saturday.

Eighteen players have been fined a total of $27,000 over the quarter-time melee in the Richmond-North Melbourne match at the MCG on Sunday.

Tigers Shane Tuck, Alex Rance, Dustin Martin, Luke McGuane, Chris Newman, Matt Dea, Reece Conca, Jayden Post, Steven Morris, Brandon Ellis and Kelvin Moore will pay between $1,200 and $2,100 if they make early guilty pleas to involvement in a melee.

North's Michael Firrito and Jamie MacMillan will receive $2,100 fines, with Drew Petrie, Robbie Tarrant, Daniel Wells, Sam Wright and Lindsay Thomas facing $1,200 sanctions if they make early guilty pleas.

Richmond's Brett Deledio has been fined $1,950 over an abusive language charge in a separate incident.

All have until lunchtime Tuesday to decide whether to contest their charges at the AFL tribunal.

Demon Jurrah to stand trial in March

Updated September 03, 2012 10:58:23

Melbourne Demons footballer Liam Jurrah has appeared briefly in the Alice Springs Supreme Court, where it was confirmed he will face trial in March next year.

Jurrah is charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of unlawfully causing serious harm.

The charges relate to an incident at an Alice Springs town camp earlier this year.

Jurrah's bail conditions were also amended to allow him to live in South Australia with family.

Four more charges laid against Demon Jurrah

By Ruby Jones

Updated May 17, 2012 22:26:47

Four more charges have been laid against AFL star Liam Jurrah but he will be able to play in a match in Darwin just two days before he goes to a committal hearing.

The Melbourne Demons player was already facing charges of causing serious harm and being armed with an offensive weapon in an alleged melee.

The charges relate to an alleged machete attack on a man at Little Sisters town camp in Alice Springs in March.

The victim of the alleged attack is his 35-year-old cousin.

In an Alice Springs court today, the prosecution added four charges of aggravated assault to the case against Jurrah.

These relate to the same evening of the alleged incident but involve four different people.

Jurrah, 23, appeared before the court via a video link from Melbourne.

Magistrate John Birch has set July 23 as a date for the committal hearing, at which time Jurrah will have to appear before the court in person.

Defence lawyer John McBride applied for a variation of bail conditions so Jurrah can play for Melbourne in a match against Port Adelaide in Darwin on July 21.

After earlier saying he did not usually vary bail conditions for personal matters, Mr Birch later approved the application.

The magistrate ordered Jurrah to travel to Alice Springs immediately after the match for the committal hearing.

Jurrah hails from Yuendumu, 260 kilometres north west of Alice Springs.

People from Jurrah's Warlpiri group have been involved in a bitter and sometimes bloody feud between two families that has divided the community.

Young Demon improving after coma

Updated May 02, 2012 17:04:53

Melbourne Football Club says rookie forward Leigh Williams' condition is improving in hospital after being diagnosed with a viral infection of the brain and placed into an induced coma.

Williams, who is yet to play a game for the Demons after being taken with pick number 59 in the 2011 draft, became severely ill on Saturday evening.

He was taken by ambulance to the intensive care unit at Box Hill Hospital and was diagnosed with viral encephalitis.

He regained consciousness on Monday morning after being treated with anti-viral drugs, but will remain in hospital for another two weeks.

Williams' doctors expect the 21-year-old to make a full recovery and return to training in time.

"Our focus is to ensure Leigh's health continues to improve, as it has over the past 48 hours and that he makes a full recovery," Demons manager Josh Mahoney said.

"Clearly returning to football is secondary to Leigh's health and we certainly won't be rushing anything in that regard."

Hunt may have to mind Demon matchwinner

Posted April 16, 2011 11:21:00

Gold Coast's project player Karmichael Hunt may be one of several defenders saddled with minding Melbourne's exciting forward Liam Jurrah at the Gabba on Sunday, according to the Suns' development coach Anthony Lovell.

Lovell said Hunt and fellow inexperienced defenders Josh Toy and Seb Tape were all likely to be on a rotation system to eyeball the spring-heeled Demon in the absence of suspended centre-half back Campbell Brown.

He said if Jurrah's firing then Melbourne is at its most dangerous and the Suns cannot afford the dangerous forward any chance to weave his magic.

"We have talked about him a little bit at match committee," Lovell said.

"He's one that clearly is a barometer of how Melbourne is going and if he's going well then usually they are going well.

"We may use a few different players on him.

"Remember our progress is as much about educating the young players as well as getting experience and you have Hunt, Tape and Toy who could all be given the opportunity to play on him."

After heavy losses to Carlton and the Western Bulldogs in their first two matches, Gold Coast is more suited, at least in the midfield, to matching it with Melbourne than their previous opponents.

The Suns' on-ball brigade, led by Gary Ablett, Michael Rischitelli and Daniel Harris will put the Demons' midfield under enormous pressure.

Lovell said it is one part of the ground the Suns are confident they are of equal or better strength than the Demons.

He said if their on-ball division can generate enough drive, win contested balls and the stoppages they will increase their inside 50s ratio and put scoreboard pressure on the inconsistent Demons.

"The stoppages will be critical," Lovell said.

"It's the team that wins the contested footy and the stoppages that usually wins.

"We did improve in that area last match.

"We played good in patches against Carlton and we need a lot more consistency but we are definitely improving.

"It's probably one area on the ground that we do match-up well against them."

The Suns promoted Matt Shaw and Luke Russell for their AFL debuts, while veteran ruckman Josh Fraser and Josh Toy will return to the side.

They lost vice captain Campbell Brown to suspension and dropped Nathan Krakouer, Alik Magin and Harley Bennell.

Melbourne named an unchanged side for Sunday's clash and they took the unusual step of heading to Brisbane a day earlier to allow them two instead of one training session at the Gabba.

The Demons held a closed training session on Friday and trained on Saturday under grey skies and in light rain.
