Great Flinders has 100 reasons to improve by Mortlock

There were stories of the great times of old and Mortlock victories past, but it wasn't a great day for the maroons, with Port Lincoln leading from every break in the Centenary celebration match in Cummins.

Sure Great Flinders were without a strong key forward player apart from Jim Holman, but Port Lincoln held all the cards for pace, strength and forward options - and stretched the lead to six goals in the third quarter despite losing star Murray Kelsh with a knee injury.

With a lot of discussions around the oval about the incredible victories that Great Flinders has had over the 100 years, we think they now have 100 reasons to improve their game by the June long weekend, for the Mortlock Shield carnival.

Given that it is the 100th year of football,

Port Lincoln 10.13 73 defeated Great Flinders 5.4 34

Lincoln best: Dale Montgomerie, Harry Miller, Matt Keatley, Joe Cragg-Sapsford, Damon Scott, Andrew Jericho.

Great Flinders best: Tyson Mickan, James Pedler, Joseph Burgoyne, George Pedler, Stephen Crettenden.

A round robin was played in the under 17s between Great Flinders, Lincoln Districts and Lincoln City.

Under 17's - Game 1 report by Pat Head

Lincoln Districts secured a win in the first game of the Under 17's against Great Flinders. The majority of play was in Lincoln Districts' forward line aided by a strong wind in the first half. After good play from Kenneth Davey, Aron Redman kicked Lincoln Districts' first goal.

A free kick to Major Lienert near goal then gave Lincoln Districts another major score. Some slick hands and good work out of the middle led to Coen Taylor picking up a third for Lincoln Districts leading into half time, the question being had Lincoln Districts done enough with Great Flinders getting the wind advantage for the final half?

Half Time Great Flinders 0-0 Lincoln Districts 3-2

Lincoln Districts attacked with good defensive work by Jack Haarsma and Will Nankivell for Great Flinders. Great Flinders worked hard to keep the ball forward against a determined Lincoln Districts defence with Will Nankivell and Nicholas Gale having shots at goal, but unable to convert.

A breakthrough came when Jack Maughan goaled for Great Flinders. A second goal to Great Flinders eventuated when Dylan Wander put one through. Great Flinders had the same number of scoring shots but inaccuracy cost them in the end with Lincoln Districts making better use of the ball.

Under 17's - Game 3 report by Pat Head

The third Under 17's clash saw Lincoln City defeat Great Flinders in what was a very low scoring game. Great Flinders kicked with the howling northerly wind. Lincoln City took the ball forward against the wind and worked it down to James Laken who had a tough shot from the boundary and couldn't goal. Another shot at goal gave Lincoln City a point.

Play moved into Great Flinders forward line but they couldn't score, with a big run out of defence by Aaron Dunn for Lincoln City.

Half Time Great Flinders 0-0 Lincoln City 0-1

Lincoln City coach Scott Clarke told his players "this is your opportunity to shine, now take it" as they took the field after half time hoping to take full advantage of the wind. They worked the ball forward with Jayden Blewitt having a shot, but hitting the post.

There was good battling and desperation by both sides with Lincoln City looking the better side, but the scoreboard suggesting a more even game. Jack Jacobs ran ball into Great Flinders forward line but Lincoln City's defenders were able to get it out. Jake Shulz attacked for Great Flinders but it was rushed for a point giving Great Flinders their only score, going down by 2 points to Lincoln City.

A round robin was played in the under 15s between Great Flinders, Lincoln Districts and Lincoln City.

Game 1

Lincoln Districts 5.3 33 defeated Great Flinders 1.3 9

Ben Glover and Luke Partington worked hard for Great Flinders before Austin Miller picked up another 2 goals for Lincoln Districts. Port Lincoln's running game was far superior with good play from Samuel Bare, Keenan Ramsey and Geoff Taylor.

Half Time: Great Flinders 0-0 Lincoln Districts 5-3

The wind was dominating proceedings and Brandon Rogers goaled half way through the final quarter for Great Flinders' first and only goal for the match.

Under 15's - Game 3 report by Pat Head

The third game of the Under 15's competition saw Great Flinders take out a 9 point win over Lincoln City. Lincoln City had the wind (which was strongly favouring the southern end now) in the first half and picked up 2 goals courtesy of Tom Porter.

Despite good efforts from Kyle Emery, Jack Tansell and Angus Bell, one wondered if Port Lincoln had done enough by half time.

Half Time: Great Flinders 0-0 Lincoln City 2-4

Great Flinders got things underway in the second half when an 85-metre shot, albeit slightly aided by the wind, rolled through for a goal to Brandon Rogers. Rogers then marked and goaled again putting Great Flinders right in the game at Lincoln City 2-4 to Great Flinders 2 goals. Great Flinders then hit the lead when Brett Northcott gained possession from a loose defensive kick and goaled.

Great Flinders scored another major when Luke Partington carried the ball forward and it ended up in Brett Northcott's hands who goaled again.

Great Flinders 4.5 29 defeated Port Lincoln 2.4 16

GF best: Adam Murnane, Mitch Partington, Jack Green, Archie Harris, Brodie Miller, Flynn Paech.

PL best: Liam Dennis, Blayne Hull, Michael Hegerty, Jy Mueller, Braden Robinson, Mitchell Lyons.

GF goals: Alexander Glover, Jack Bedding, Flynn Paech, Jack Green.

PL goals: Nick Pedro, Braden Robinson.

Match report by Pat Head

Great Flinders kicked centenary celebrations off with a win over Port Lincoln in the Under 13s match. Great Flinders kicked to the southern end aided by a reasonably strong breeze. Port Lincoln defended well, with Mitchell Partington and Max Treloar standing out for Great Flinders. The difficult windy conditions meant it was scrambly match, a theme that followed through the day.

Quarter Time: Great Flinders 0-3 Port Lincoln 0-0

A goal against the breeze to Jack Bedding gave Great Flinders their first goal. When Port Lincoln got control of the ball they played a good running game and they got their first when captain Nick Pedro goaled following a scrimmage for the ball.

Half Time: Great Flinders 1-3 Port Lincoln 1-2

Great Flinders capitalised on the breeze after half time with Flynn Peach playing on after a free kick to put Great Flinders second goal on the board. A mark to Alex Glover gave Great Flinders another goal and Jack Green then goaled after a mark in the square.

Three Quarter Time: Great Flinders 4-5 Port Lincoln 1-2

Port Lincoln fought back in the final quarter with a at the 7 minute mark from Braden Robinson but it was a little too late. Port Lincoln looked good when they ran the ball but got caught too many times by Great Flinders excellent tackling.

Great Flinders to celebrate 100 years with match against Port Lincoln

One hundred years of football will be celebrated in the Great Flinders league this weekend as their Centenary celebrations kick off with the association match against their nemesis Port Lincoln.

The home team will run out under the tutelage of first time Great Flinders coach Craig 'Ferret' Curtis, who has proudly played for the side over many years.

Captain is George Pedler, who takes on the role 54 years after his grandfather Vin Pedler led Great Flinders.

George says it's a proud time for the club.

"Oh there's a huge amount of pride I mean the guernsey has been worn by a lot of great players and a lot of those will be present so there's yeah a real honour and it's great to be a part of it," he says.

The Great Flinders captain says that the side trained very well with all players keen to line up and represent their team.

Vice captain is Daniel Wedd who will be part of the difficult to penetrate Great Flinders backline, joined by Tysan 'Rooster' Mickan, James 'Flog' Pedler and past Eyre Peninsula representative Mark Habner.

Some tough courageous footballers will be lining up in the middle with George, Scott 'Jock' Blacker (who also just celebrated a birthday - happy days), possibly Jimmy Chard as well as the very good, fast, electrifying footballer with a proud Port Lincoln history - Joseph Burgoyne.

In the Great Flinders forward line we'll see the strong hands of Jim Holman who's been playing in the maroon since high school and has been performing well up forward for Ramblers this season, as well as dual Mail Medallist Hayden Parker.

But while the passion and will to win is strong in the Great Flinders camp, a whisper has come in that the Port Lincoln team selection and guernsey 'presentation' night was flat, so the question remains - can they lift up in order to take it to their rivals?

Port Lincoln sporting correspondent Bluey Dunn thinks they can.

Bluey was a representative of the Port Lincoln side in 1950 and says that he'll never forget playing against Great Flinders , despite being severely concussed in the match.

"Any person picked for Port Lincoln should be proud of that position to play, should defend it to death and get stick into it... so you Port Lincoln boys, we're expecting a lot out of you, no shirking it, get into it, get stuck into it and win this game," he says.

Port Lincoln will line up with two captains, Andrew 'the wall' Jericho at centre half back and co-captain the 'gladiator' Matthew Goodwin (also known as the Scarlett Pimpernel by Bluey) with vice captain Craig Reincke in full back.

Bluey says the Port Lincoln side will line up with five Mail Medallists on the ground.

"They can all be used as on-ballers, mid-fielders or they can push forward or go back and that starts with Wes Bilney, then Harry Miller (from Hawthorn), Matthew Keatley, Matthew Godwin, Murray Kelsh who can play in the upper half forward even be put back in the pocket or around the centre bounce, and of course you'll have the rucks being led by Jesse Kemp who's in remarkable form," Bluey says.

In late news, Yoey Wagner is believed to have sustained a injury to his rear end in a staple gun incident on Friday afternoon. Whether or not that will keep him out of the side, we'll have to wait and see.

The games kick off at Cummins oval at 9.30am with the Under 13s playing four 12 minute quarters. Trophy presentation will be held after the game next to the change rooms.

The Under 15s will play 2 x 15 minute halves and begins at 10.30 with Great Flinders Vs Lincoln Districts, at 11.10 it's Lincoln Districts Vs Lincoln City, then at 11.50 it's Lincoln City Vs Great Flinders.

The Under 15s trophy presentation will take place next to the change rooms after the games.

The Under 17s begins at 12.30pm, again playing 2 x 15 minute halves with Great Flinders Vs Lincoln Districts, at 1.10 Lincoln Districts Vs Lincoln City and then at 1.50pm Great Flinders Vs Lincoln City. Again the trophy presentation will be held after the games at the change rooms.

The League match will kick off at 2.30 when the teams line up for the Australian National Anthem, the coin toss and a short speech to mark the occasion.

At around 2.45pm the A Grade game will begin, playing four 20 minute quarters plus time on. At the end of the match the trophy presentation will take place on the oval.

A display will also be open for viewing in the Cummins Bowling Club during the day, with memorabillia and photographs of Great Flinders history.

Check out what's happening in the Great Flinders Vs Port Lincoln netball games in the report by Brooke Neindorf.

After the games are played, there is an evening event at the Cummins town hall with the auction of the heritage guernsey's, guest speaker former Adelaide Crow Shaun Rehn and more.

To check out what the weather will be doing, take a look at the four day forecast on our website. At this stage looks like wet and windy.

Wudinna will be hosting a round robin interleague game between them, Eastern Eyre and Far West this weekend.

In a Mortlock Shield type of day, the gates will open at 8.30am with a bacon and egg breakfast available.

Their matches begin with the Under 15s at 9.30 with Mid West taking on Eastern Eyre, followed by Eastern Eyre Vs Far West at 10.20 and Far West Vs Mid West at 11.10.

The Under 13s will play at the Wudinna Area School Oval beginning at 10am with Mid West Vs Eastern Eyre, 11am is Eastern Eyre Vs Far West and 12 noon is Far West Vs Mid West.

The Under 17s will be on the main football oval again from 12 noon with Mid West Vs Eastern Eyre, 1pm for Eastern Eyre Vs Far West at 2.35pm for Far West Vs Mid West with medal presentations for the junior teams at 2.35pm.

The League begins at 2.40pm with Mid West Vs Eastern Eyre, at 3.40 it's Eastern Eyre Vs Far West, followed by Far West Vs Mid West at 4.40pm with Medal Presentations at 5.30pm.

Best of luck to all teams competing.

Great Flinders netball preview

Here we are on the cusp of another netball season and with players already in a frantic rush to wash their lucky socks and find the most comfortable sneakers, I thought it was high time we had a look at what Great Flinders netball has in store for us in 2011.

The first game will see Tumby Bay take on Lock at the home of the Blues, Ramblers are meeting Eyre United out at Ungarra and Cougars take on Yeelanna at Cummins.

Good luck to everyone involved in the 2011 season this year and whether you are playing, coaching, umpiring, scoring, timing or simply just watching, enjoy the year and play hard but play fair.

Bring on the netball!

The undefeated A grade premiers from 2010 look set to be strong contenders again his year to go back to back.

The side is once again under the eye of the very experienced Gayle Phillips and Cathy Haarsma and they haven't lost any players from the premiership side.

They also welcome back Aimee Pedler from having a baby and Shannon Nagel joins the black and whites which will add even more depth to the defence end.

The A reserves and B grade will also look to go back to back with plenty of new combinations available for all sides.

Expect to see some big wins for Ramblers this year and at important times during the finals.

Ins: Caitlin Parker (Wanilla), Jess Murray (Wanilla), Shannon Nagel (Bostons), Aimee Pedler (returning from pregnancy), Kirsty Fox (returning from pregnancy), Bec Langley (out of retirement)

Outs: Abbi Dahlitz (Adelaide), Tatum Lawrie (Yeelanna) Tori Dahlitz (Yeelanna)

A Grade prediction: Runners Up

The Tumby bay netball club has huge numbers again this year but all teams are looking strong and fit and ready to take on the 2011 season.

There have been some new coaches appointed and plenty of new players welcomed to the club.

The Tumby Bay Netball Club A grade had a poor end to the season last year losing to Ramblers by way too many goals in the grand final, but this year they look set to break the Magpies undefeated run.

With the return of Ilka Curtis and Nadine McInerney the A grade side is looking promising.

Young gun Renee Butler has returned from a year at Eyre United and has been included in this year's side and looks set to be a consistent A grade player in the future.

The A grade side will once again be guided by playing coach Charmaine Cross and keeps Somma Baldissera, Stacey Curtis, Karlee Dunn, Shae Franks and Linda Trenberth in the side.

The A reserves is also looking strong and after a couple of years of finishing third and fourth the team is ready to step up and try and bring home a premiership.

The B grade and B reserves are also filled with both youth and experience and plenty of position combinations with both sides having plenty of numbers.

Ins: Nardine McInerney (pregnancy), Ilka Curtis (pregnancy), Renee Butler (Eyre United), Sarah Lynch (new to town), Erica Larwood (returns to town), Leah Hunt (Cowell), Lyndal Stanley (Eyre United), Jessica Cave, (returns to town), Leanne Higgins (returning), Therese Lawrie (pregnancy)

Out: Emily Schwark (Adelaide), Briohny Cave (work commitments), Bianca Jenkins (overseas), Ellen Walker (Adelaide), Leanne Butler (retired), Lisa James (Adelaide), Danielle Carr (pregnant)

A Grade Prediction: Premiers

Eyre United might have lost a lot of players from last year but they have been able to add to the team lists with new girls coming in.

The A grade side finished third last year and while there is only three of last year's team still around, the team welcomes back Chelsea Franks and Brooke Parsley which will boost their side and provide the experience for the younger players to look up to.

Donna McCallum has the experience to take her side to the next level and with a mixture of youth and experience the Eyre united saints should go well again this year.

As last year's Great Flinders Netball Association most successful club, Eyre United hopes to continue this form in both the juniors and seniors.

One player to look out for is young Twania Flavel who is making her A grade debut this year and if she is anything like her mum Deb Flavel she will be a player to watch.

Ins: Twania Flavel, Tagline Flavel, Sarah walker, Deb Flavel, Janine Pobke, Danielle Nugent (All from Port Lincoln), Susan Carmody (Cowell), Kristy Modra, Eden Telfer, Nicole Kroemer, Emma Pycroft, Shelley Fiegert, Kirsty Ives, Nicole Doley (All returning or new to club), Abby Degner, Jessie Liddicoat, Susanna Simpson and Leann Schreiber (All moving into seniors)

Outs: Trish Tassie, Karissa Cave, Kellie Freeman, Mardi Montgomerie, Kimberley Modra, Renni Maitland, Kyra Cave, Lyndal Stanley (Tumby Bay), Kylie Butler (Tumby Bay), Renee Butler (Tumby Bay), Lynne Coote, Sofia Modra, Mel Skarstrom, Kelsey Birkin, Corree Guerin, Britt Carmody (Adelaide), Rachel Telfer.

A Grade Prediction: Fourth

The Lock netball club is hoping the string of pregnancies that have occurred produce plenty of girls because unfortunately for the club they can only fill three sides once again.

This year the Roos won't have an A reserves side due to people leaving the district, injuries and pregnancies but the A grade side is still looking reasonably strong.

While it might take them a little while to gel at the start of the year hopefully they don't get too disheartened if there are some early losses because by the start if the second round I can see they will be challenging teams and even getting the points on the board.

Coached once again by Jodie Thompson the younger girls, such as Sarah Hurrell will combine well with Mel Glover and Abby Lee Agars - two of the more experienced players in the side and great club members of the Lock Roos.

In the B grade and B reserves, expect the teams o be competitive this year with some junior players stepping up as well as some of the "older" ladies adding the experience to the side.

A grade prediction: Sixth (prove me wrong girls)

Like Tumby Bay Yeelanna has huge numbers this year and girls who would normally be playing in a higher grade are taking on roles in other teams.

Holly Campbell will be playing coach this year and will do a great job rallying her troops through the centre court, while her mum Debbie will be keeping a watchful and experienced eye on things from the sidelines.

The return of a number of players from maternity leave will bolster the both the A grade and A reserves who are looking to go one better this year and take home the premiership.

The B grade and B reserves is also looking extremely strong with some new players to the club and a player to watch will be Cheryl Thompson who looks to be running the centre for the B reserves.

Ins: Penny Will, Ebony Christian, Tatum Lawrie (Ramblers), Candice Lawrie (Ramblers), Bree Boyanton (Cougars), Lauren Keough, Lauren Routledge, Cheryl Thompson, Holly Turner - (retuned to the club from Ceduna), Rikki-Lee Watson, Kate Hancock (pregnancy), Brianna Modra, (pregnancy), Kellie Taylor (pregnancy), Tegan Modra (pregnancy), Kirsty Koch (pregnancy), Ahza Benedik, Caitlyn Martin, Jess Armstrong, Rianna McLaughlan (All coming up from juniors)

Out: Fiona Adams, Emma Hancock, Vicki Phillips, Sarah Nicholls, Kelsey Mullan, Maddie Richardson, Rebecca Carratt, Peta Griffiths, Amy-Lee Pervan

A grade prediction - Third.

The A grade side has made a few changes this year with some players leaving and a few new ones coming to the club. New coach Carrie Oesterman is looking at continually improving the side and seeing them be competitive throughout the year.

A big inclusion will be Jessica Green who was a star junior for Cougars and will be a welcome addition through the centre court with the Meyers sisters.

A big loss for the club is the retirement of gun netballer Sam Pedler who is hanging up the on court shoes but will no doubt be kept busy with other jobs at the club.

In: Jessica Green (returned), Belinda-Jane Clarke (Adelaide), Hayley Winen (Adelaide), Taylor Siegert (returned), SallyAnn Hill (returned), Lynne Davies (retuned), Kristy Southern (Tumby Bay), Kristy Cunningham (new), Kerri- Ann Lock (new), Melissa Roberts (new) , Georgia Nelligan (D Grade), Lisa Smith (D Grade), Tiahni Adamson (D grade), Genevive Wright (D grade)

Out: Sam Pedler (retired), Katelyn Wright (uni), Catlin Phelps (uni), Tash Puckridge (retired), Stacey Smith (Bostons), Marika Giddings, Kylie Smith, Robyne May, Elise Moroney (Wudinna), Emily Doudle (pregnant), Mardi Green (inj), Pennie Hazelgrove (apprenticeship), Shay Kimber (inj), Sarah Southern (Adelaide)

A grade prediction: Fifth
