Buddy says Hawks must improve

Updated September 23, 2012 14:57:59

Hawthorn star Lance Franklin says the AFL premiership favourite will have to improve greatly from its preliminary final performance to win Saturday's grand final against Sydney.

The Hawks expect to regain captain Luke Hodge for the decider after he missed Saturday night's desperately tight 13.19 (97) to 14.8 (92) win over Adelaide through illness.

But Hodge was not at the club for Sunday's recovery session and team-mates said he had been kept away from them since training on Friday.

"He's got the bug. He's not in this morning, but he'll be fine," Franklin said on Sunday.

"I don't think anyone would want to miss a grand final so Hodgey will get himself right and get himself up for this weekend.

"It's lucky we were able to get over the line for him because I think he would have been a little bit disappointed to miss out."

Franklin said the Hawks badly needed to improve their shooting for goal and admitted he was a major culprit with some poor misses.

"This week we need to take our opportunities when we can, otherwise it could cost us," he said.

"I think I had (former Hawks president) Jeff Kennett's boots on the way I was kicking.

"I obviously just didn't kick as straight as I would have liked to.

"We just need to take those opportunities.

"I was disappointed in myself but we were able to win so that was good."

Franklin said the Hawks were happy to reach a grand final not playing their best but could not afford to hope to beat the Swans playing the same way.

"Definitely we've got to play a lot better than we did on the night," he said.

"Sydney are a great side too and play four quarters of football every week, so it's going to be a tough game."

Defender Brent Guerra is pushing to return from a hamstring injury and Franklin said it would pose a tough decision for coach Alastair Clarkson.

"I hope (he returns). He'll train this week and he's been really training hard the last couple of weeks to get himself up for this game, so it's a hard decision for Clarko so we'll just leave that to the coaching staff," Franklin said.

Magpies can improve fast: Pendlebury

Updated September 12, 2012 19:22:11

Collingwood's Scott Pendlebury is confident the Magpies can bounce back from the last-start loss to Hawthorn and avoid a straight-sets finals exit.

The Magpies will have to hurriedly regroup following their 38-point defeat at the hands of the Hawks ahead of Saturday's semi-final against West Coast at the MCG.

Pendlebury says the players are upbeat they can turn around the result of their most recent match against West Coast, a 49-point loss at Subiaco Oval in round 22.

"Finals makes a new ball game, there's a lot more pressure on in finals footy," he said.

"Last week against Hawthorn we took great steps in the right direction."

Pendlebury says the return of number one ruckman Darren Jolly, absent from the whipping by the Eagles, will be a major boost against the imposing tag team of Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui.

"It's a massive in for us," he said.

"Getting your number one ruckman always helps against probably the best ruck tandem in the league.

"We just want Jolls to compete and also us guys at ground level. We still got smashed in the contested footy and clearances, so we've got a bit of work to do and we're looking forward to getting our hands dirty."

Pendlebury says the Magpies defence will need to step up to cover the absence of suspended skipper Nick Maxwell, with more responsibility falling to the likes of Heath Shaw, Ben Reid and Harry O'Brien.

He also says the death in Las Vegas of Port Adelaide player and former Magpies team-mate John McCarthy has been dealt with by the group in a respectful manner.

"Any time the boys are together, like Monday when we came out and had a good training session, just being able to get together and talk about it," Pendlebury said.

"At times like this you never want to be by yourself and thinking about it.

"When you are together you can all talk and comfort each other."

Meanwhile, the AFL has issued an official warning to the Magpies after coach Nathan Buckley approached the umpires during the three-quarter time break against the Hawks at the MCG last Friday night.

The league has also cautioned Buckley in regard to his post-match comments concerning the matchday report of Maxwell.

Cats can improve, says Scott

Updated June 5, 2011 08:30:00

Geelong coach Chris Scott said the Cats had plenty of improvement left in them after thumping the Western Bulldogs by 61 points on Saturday.

Scott's Cats continued their unbeaten start to the AFL season with their 10th win, crushing the Bulldogs 23.10 (148) to 13.9 (87).

Big Brad Ottens kicked five goals and third-gamer Nathan Vardy showed promise as a tall-forward option with one goal and 10 possessions including three marks.

The Cats had dropped ruckman/forward Tom Hawkins to the VFL and Scott could not have been happier with the efforts of 19-year-old Vardy.

Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel dominated midfield, as the Cats took control of the match with an eight-goal burst in the second quarter to lead by 50 points at half-time.

Daniel Giansiracusa kicked five goals from limited opportunities for the Bulldogs, while out-of-form defender Brian Lake went forward in the second half and finished with three goals.

It is the Bulldogs' sixth loss in their past seven games as they lose touch with the top eight.

Geelong won the possessions tally 384-306 and the inside-50s were 63 to 41.

"It's the most complete performance we've put together," Scott said.

"Our tall forwards have been questioned a little bit. We got a good return from them today.

"We took the ball forward a little bit quicker and mainly that was a result of our work around the ball.

"We were able to get in and win the contested ball and we tackled a little bit better than we have recently as well.

"It's good that we've still got things to improve on," Scott added, pointing to the tackle count which the Cats lost 72-69.

Tall forward Cameron Mooney was rested on Saturday with a knee injury, but the 31-year-old was expected to return to VFL ranks in a few weeks with the aim of being back in the AFL for the finals series.

Scott laughed off a radio interview in which Mooney said he faced a "make-or-break" period over the next month.

"He's a bit of a drama queen," Scott said.

"There's a chance that he may not come good. It may go wrong but we're anticipating that he'll be okay."

Vardy, who also had 15 hit-outs, was making excellent progress according to Scott, who compared him to St Kilda star Nick Riewoldt.

"I really rate him. He has got the attributes to play as a genuine forward and he's a very good young ruckman as well," Scott said.

"We all know they take time to develop, but he doesn't look out of place at all.

"I can see the similarities (with Riewoldt). He is an exceptional contested mark.

"For a second-year player to be doing those things at AFL level is really exciting because they do take time.

"Tom Hawkins is a good example. He's 22. That's young for a key forward.

"Nathan's really agile and he's a good runner as well.

"We're trying not get carried away, but it's hard."

Geelong host arch rivals Hawthorn next Saturday night at the MCG.

Great Flinders has 100 reasons to improve by Mortlock

There were stories of the great times of old and Mortlock victories past, but it wasn't a great day for the maroons, with Port Lincoln leading from every break in the Centenary celebration match in Cummins.

Sure Great Flinders were without a strong key forward player apart from Jim Holman, but Port Lincoln held all the cards for pace, strength and forward options - and stretched the lead to six goals in the third quarter despite losing star Murray Kelsh with a knee injury.

With a lot of discussions around the oval about the incredible victories that Great Flinders has had over the 100 years, we think they now have 100 reasons to improve their game by the June long weekend, for the Mortlock Shield carnival.

Given that it is the 100th year of football,

Port Lincoln 10.13 73 defeated Great Flinders 5.4 34

Lincoln best: Dale Montgomerie, Harry Miller, Matt Keatley, Joe Cragg-Sapsford, Damon Scott, Andrew Jericho.

Great Flinders best: Tyson Mickan, James Pedler, Joseph Burgoyne, George Pedler, Stephen Crettenden.

Lincoln goals: Murray Kelsh 2, Johan Wagner 2, Rohan Miegel 2, Harry Miller 1, Matt Parker, Wes Bilney.

Great Flinders goals: Luke Northcott, Tom Kelly, Michael Crettenden, James Pedler, Ben Green.

A round robin was played in the under 17s between Great Flinders, Lincoln Districts and Lincoln City.

Goals LD: Aron Redman, Major Lienert, Coen Taylor.

Goals GF: Jack Maughan, Dylan Wandner

Under 17's - Game 1 report by Pat Head

Lincoln Districts secured a win in the first game of the Under 17's against Great Flinders. The majority of play was in Lincoln Districts' forward line aided by a strong wind in the first half. After good play from Kenneth Davey, Aron Redman kicked Lincoln Districts' first goal.

A free kick to Major Lienert near goal then gave Lincoln Districts another major score. Some slick hands and good work out of the middle led to Coen Taylor picking up a third for Lincoln Districts leading into half time, the question being had Lincoln Districts done enough with Great Flinders getting the wind advantage for the final half?

Half Time Great Flinders 0-0 Lincoln Districts 3-2

Lincoln Districts attacked with good defensive work by Jack Haarsma and Will Nankivell for Great Flinders. Great Flinders worked hard to keep the ball forward against a determined Lincoln Districts defence with Will Nankivell and Nicholas Gale having shots at goal, but unable to convert.

A breakthrough came when Jack Maughan goaled for Great Flinders. A second goal to Great Flinders eventuated when Dylan Wander put one through. Great Flinders had the same number of scoring shots but inaccuracy cost them in the end with Lincoln Districts making better use of the ball.

Game 2

Lincoln City 5.3 33 defeated Lincoln Districts 3.1 19

LC best: Matt Downey, James Lakin, Tom Wadsworth, Sean Emery, Riley Nisbet, Aaron Dunn.

LD best: Mitchell Denniss, Kenneth Davey, Coen Taylor, Damien King, William Roderick, Quinn Ah-kit Burgoyne.

Under 17's - Game 3 report by Pat Head

The third Under 17's clash saw Lincoln City defeat Great Flinders in what was a very low scoring game. Great Flinders kicked with the howling northerly wind. Lincoln City took the ball forward against the wind and worked it down to James Laken who had a tough shot from the boundary and couldn't goal. Another shot at goal gave Lincoln City a point.

Play moved into Great Flinders forward line but they couldn't score, with a big run out of defence by Aaron Dunn for Lincoln City.

Half Time Great Flinders 0-0 Lincoln City 0-1

Lincoln City coach Scott Clarke told his players "this is your opportunity to shine, now take it" as they took the field after half time hoping to take full advantage of the wind. They worked the ball forward with Jayden Blewitt having a shot, but hitting the post.

There was good battling and desperation by both sides with Lincoln City looking the better side, but the scoreboard suggesting a more even game. Jack Jacobs ran ball into Great Flinders forward line but Lincoln City's defenders were able to get it out. Jake Shulz attacked for Great Flinders but it was rushed for a point giving Great Flinders their only score, going down by 2 points to Lincoln City.

A round robin was played in the under 15s between Great Flinders, Lincoln Districts and Lincoln City.

Under 15's - Game 3 report by Pat Head

The third game of the Under 15's competition saw Great Flinders take out a 9 point win over Lincoln City. Lincoln City had the wind (which was strongly favouring the southern end now) in the first half and picked up 2 goals courtesy of Tom Porter.

Despite good efforts from Kyle Emery, Jack Tansell and Angus Bell, one wondered if Port Lincoln had done enough by half time.

Half Time: Great Flinders 0-0 Lincoln City 2-4

Great Flinders got things underway in the second half when an 85-metre shot, albeit slightly aided by the wind, rolled through for a goal to Brandon Rogers. Rogers then marked and goaled again putting Great Flinders right in the game at Lincoln City 2-4 to Great Flinders 2 goals. Great Flinders then hit the lead when Brett Northcott gained possession from a loose defensive kick and goaled.

Great Flinders scored another major when Luke Partington carried the ball forward and it ended up in Brett Northcott's hands who goaled again.

Great Flinders 4.5 29 defeated Port Lincoln 2.4 16

PL goals: Nick Pedro, Braden Robinson.

Match report by Pat Head

Great Flinders kicked centenary celebrations off with a win over Port Lincoln in the Under 13s match. Great Flinders kicked to the southern end aided by a reasonably strong breeze. Port Lincoln defended well, with Mitchell Partington and Max Treloar standing out for Great Flinders. The difficult windy conditions meant it was scrambly match, a theme that followed through the day.

Quarter Time: Great Flinders 0-3 Port Lincoln 0-0

A goal against the breeze to Jack Bedding gave Great Flinders their first goal. When Port Lincoln got control of the ball they played a good running game and they got their first when captain Nick Pedro goaled following a scrimmage for the ball.

Half Time: Great Flinders 1-3 Port Lincoln 1-2

Great Flinders capitalised on the breeze after half time with Flynn Peach playing on after a free kick to put Great Flinders second goal on the board. A mark to Alex Glover gave Great Flinders another goal and Jack Green then goaled after a mark in the square.

Three Quarter Time: Great Flinders 4-5 Port Lincoln 1-2

Port Lincoln fought back in the final quarter with a at the 7 minute mark from Braden Robinson but it was a little too late. Port Lincoln looked good when they ran the ball but got caught too many times by Great Flinders excellent tackling.
