Magpies hoodoo continues for Swans

Updated August 12, 2012 17:27:34

Collingwood made an emphatic statement about its premiership credentials on Saturday night, downing ladder-leaders Sydney by eight points in a thrilling match worthy of September billing.

The Magpies were routinely challenged in a scrappy clash played under finals-like pressure, but held sway in a dramatic final quarter to win 12.6 (78) to 9.16 (70) at the Olympic stadium.

Sydney held a 17-point lead, the largest margin of the game, halfway through the third term and then had countless chances to regain the advantage in the final quarter.

Lewis Jetta, Ben McGlynn, Tony Armstrong, Josh Kennedy and Adam Goodes all missed shots in the fourth term, with Goodes having a forgettable night on the whole.

The Magpies' win, achieved largely without star wingman Dale Thomas who was substituted early in the second quarter with a leg injury, extended Collingwood's winning streak against Sydney to 11 matches.

It also laid the platform for a thrilling end to the season, with the Magpies, Swans and Adelaide all on 60 points and tussling for top spot on the ladder.

Fittingly it was best-on-ground Dayne Beams who kicked the sealer in the dying stages.

As predicted by Swans coach John Longmire on Friday, Beams took up the slack left by star midfielder Dane Swan, who copped a club-imposed two-game ban for drinking.

While Beams' influence was quelled somewhat by Kieren Jack, who was shifted onto him after halftime, he still finished the game with impressive numbers - 34 disposals, 11 clearances and three goals.

In a match where both sides struggled to create goals or much free space, Swans on-baller Kennedy worked the stoppages in Brett Kirk-like fashion.

Kennedy had a game-high 40 possessions, eight tackles and nine clearances.

Thomas's injury was worked on for the duration of quarter-time, he returned to the field in the second term but was still restricted.

It meant coach Nathan Buckley had to turn to veteran goal-sneak Alan Didak earlier than expected.

Didak, who returned for his first AFL game since sustaining a groin injury while playing against Melbourne on June 11, showed his spark was still there with the last goal of the first half.

Swans utility Lewis Roberts-Thomson was involved in a heated wrestle with former teammate Darren Jolly in the second term, while Collingwood spearhead Chris Dawes could face sanction after hurling his mouth guard in anger at Swans defender Alex Johnson.

The Swans were inaccurate in front of goal and guilty of turning the ball over far too often in a low-scoring game played in front of a crowd of 45,827 - Sydney's biggest since 2008.

The match was marred by windy conditions, best typified by the fact Sydney's banner collapsed before 100-gamer McGlynn could run through.

Buckley paid tribute to his charges' decision-making and attack on the ball in the "excellent win".

"I thought the boys showed really good concentration, intensity, ticker, hunger - whatever you want to call it," he said.

"It was a very strong four-quarter performance. Especially when there were things that weren't going our way at some times."

Longmire was disappointed with the loss that ended his club's nine-game winning streak, but took heart from how close they came to victory in the September dress rehearsal.

"I thought that it was just two teams having an absolute crack. You go through the stats and it was very even," he said.

"I think we had 25 scoring shots to 18, we missed a few chances that would have made a difference at important times."

Collingwood: 12.6 (78) - Goals: Beams 3, Cloke 3, Blair, Didak, Fasolo, Seedsman, Thomas, Wellingham.

Sydney: 9.16 (70) - Goals: Roberts-Thompson 2, Bird, Dennis-Lane, Goodes, Kennedy, McGlynn, O'Keefe, Pyke.

Kennedy continues Eagles' horror injury run

Updated May 01, 2012 15:53:04

West Coast forward Josh Kennedy is set to miss the next three months with scans confirming he requires ankle surgery.

Kennedy suffered the injury after landing awkwardly in a marking contest in Sunday's 10-point victory over Richmond.

Kennedy, 24, returned to the field, but the Eagles claim no further damage was suffered by his efforts to continue.

Kennedy needs a six-to-eight-week recovery period before he can start the process of rebuilding his fitness base.

The key forward's injury is another blow to ladder-leading West Coast, which has already lost All-Australian Mark LeCras (knee) for the season.

Goalsneak Mark Nicoski (hamstring) and winger Andrew Embley (shoulder) are also nursing serious injuries and will not return until the second half of the season.

Kennedy booted 59 goals in 2011, and his absence will put major pressure on fellow key forwards Jack Darling and Quinten Lynch to boost their goalkicking outputs.

The Eagles take on North Melbourne at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

Nightmare continues for the Crows

The pressure on Neil Craig is sure to mount after another big loss by the Crows.

The Crows nightmare season has continued, with the club all but out of finals contention after going down by 47 points to North Melbourne at Docklands on Sunday.

Another poor start cost Adelaide with the Roos kicking the first 5 goals of the match, and from there the Crows never got back within touching distance.

Once again coach Neil Craig will spend the week under the microscope, with his future at the helm of the Crows to be questioned after another poor display by a team that has won just three games for the season.

North Melbourne, on the other hand, did captain Brent Harvey proud as he celebrated his 311th game for the Kangaroos, equalling the club record set by Kangaroos legend Glenn Archer.

But it was future star Andrew Swallow who took the limelight with a superb display in the 18.7 (115) to 10.8 (68) triumph.

Swallow provided a glimpse into the future, finishing with 39 disposals and two goals whilst also dominating contested possessions and clearances in a virtuoso individual display.

Harvey had 17 touches and two goals while Drew Petrie kicked four off his own as North picked up a third win for the season to draw level with the Crows.

Bernie Vince made an encouraging return for the Crows with 26 possessions and albeit inaccurate, Kurt Tippett finished with three majors.

Swallow gave North a scare when he limped off early in the last term, but only a couple of minutes later he was winning another clearance.

He put on a clinic in the first term with 17 disposals, 14 contested possessions and 10 clearances and also kicked the first goal of the game.

After kicking the first two goals, North suffered an early blow when Jamie MacMillan had to be stretchered off with concussion.

Adelaide's Richard Douglas will come under video scrutiny after his hip collected MacMillan's head as the young Kangaroo was trying to gain possession.

But substitute Ben Speight did well when he came on for MacMillan and finished among North's best players.

Adelaide did not kick its first major until 26 minutes into the first quarter.

North continued to dominate general play in the second term, but the Crows were resilient and went goal for goal with their opponents.

Adelaide should have been closer than 23 points behind at half-time, with Tippett and Sam Jacobs missing straight-forward set shots on goal.

The Crows had their chances again through the third term, twice reducing the margin to 21 points.

Adelaide's two goals for the quarter came from 50m penalties against Jack Ziebell and Scott Thompson, a consistent problem for North over their last three games.

But the Kangaroos steadied with three goals and had a decisive 40-point lead at the last change.

Defender Graham Johncock was Adelaide's best player and captain Nathan van Berlo was solid when he went onto Harvey.

The goalkicking yips continued for North forward Lindsay Thomas, who had a set shot after the final siren and sprayed it out on the full.

FINAL SCORE

Kangaroos: 18.7 (115) - D Petrie 4, A Swallow 2, B Harvey 2, L Adams 2, L Anthony 2, A Edwards, B Speight, J Ziebell, K Harper, L Hansen, T Goldstein.

Crows: 10.8 (68) - K Tippett 3, J Gunston 2, P Dangerfield 2, R Henderson, R Sloane, S Thompson.
