Pies lose Brown for a month

Updated May 14, 2012 12:57:05

Collingwood will be without Nathan Brown for up to a month after the club announced the key defender had suffered a strained medial ligament in his left knee.

The Magpies said in a statement on Monday that they expect him to be sidelined for two to four weeks after copping the injury before half-time in the side's crushing win over Brisbane on Saturday night at the Gabba.

Brown only returned to the senior side on Anzac Day after missing more than a year of footy due to two knee injuries suffered in 2011.

He has played three AFL games this season.

Brown suffers another knee injury

Posted June 16, 2011 16:02:00

Collingwood premiership defender Nathan Brown has suffered a second knee injury, this time on a training camp in Arizona.

Brown, who suffered a season-ending ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury earlier in the year, damaged the patella on his other knee during a hike.

There was no further damage to his reconstructed knee.

Brown was one of four Magpies players on the mid-season trip to Arizona.

Brown lifts Lions to first win

Updated May 21, 2011 22:59:00

Jonathan Brown produced another comeback to remember on Saturday night to inspire the Brisbane Lions to their first win of the AFL season.

Brown kicked four second-half goals in the wet at the Gabba to lead the Lions back from a 19-point deficit late in the third term for a 10.13 (73) to 8.11 (60) victory over North Melbourne.

In his first game back from multiple facial fractures suffered in round one, the Brisbane skipper was not in the same class as when he kicked eight against Essendon in his return from suspension in 2005, but his mere presence and muscle were crucial to the drought-breaking triumph.

"[The boys are] absolutely ecstatic - it's like winning the final I think," he told Grandstand.

"The pressure's been on everyone and [it was] certainly frustrating for myself, watching the boys you just want to get out there and help.

"It's certainly a big relief but we'll have to reset ourselves and hopefully string a couple together."

The Kangaroos appeared to have all the running on a wet night in front of the Lions' smallest crowd of the year of 18,404, until Brown combined with fellow veteran Simon Black.

Well held by Scott Thompson and first-gamer Luke Delaney in the first half, Brown broke free after half-time and kicked two goals in four minutes to have the Lions within five at the last change.

Kangaroos coach Brad Scott was livid when Scott McMahon mindlessly conceded Brown's third goal with a 50-metre penalty.

Scott's patience was tested further when Brown was gifted the first goal of the last term to tie the scores at 8.10 when Thompson also gave away 50m after the Brisbane skipper had marked beyond his range.

The Lions then over-ran the visitors with Todd Banfield scoring in highly controversial circumstances from 50 metres after a blatant throw by Black, before Jack Redden iced the win.

Besieged Lions coach Michael Voss admitted he was a relieved man after the tense win.

"We've been fighting pretty hard for this," he said.

"It's only one win isn't it, but it's an important one for our club."

Voss paid tribute to Brown's leadership as much as his impact in the pivotal third term.

"It's what he draws. Even if he kicks no goals tonight he'll have an impact on the players around him through his presence and how he organises, and people walk taller with him out there," he said.

Scott was full of praise for Delaney's efforts on Brown, pointing out he would have been held to two goals if not for the "ill-disciplined" acts by McMahon and Thompson.

But Scott was otherwise furious with his players for wasting a golden chance for a second straight win, and third of the season.

"We had a game that was in our grasp and we let it slip," he said.

"Brisbane really lifted in the second half and we couldn't match their intensity.

"They lifted and we just stopped to a walk in the last quarter."

Scott also bemoaned a poor conversion rate in the first half when his side had control of the game.

"We just didn't convert our opportunities well enough," he said.

Brown had managed just one behind from his only set shot from five first-half kicks.

In contrast, North Melbourne forward Aaron Edwards continued his marvellous accuracy in front of goals this season by kicking three straight in the second term for a 14.0 record this season.

Coming off a six-goal haul against Melbourne last week, Edwards propelled the Kangaroos to a 13-point half-time lead.

The quality of play in the opening term matched the terrible conditions with neither side able to master the wet.

"It wasn't real dry in the second half [either] but I just think we were a bit cute with the ball in the first half," Brown said.

"Vossy [coach Michael Voss] was a bit disappointed with that and just thought we had to drive it a bit, be more predictable and drive it in deeper and put the North Melb defence under pressure.

"Eventually the dam wall broke and we got the job done in the end."

It took until the 16-minute mark for Kangaroos skipper Brent Harvey to finally snap the first major, but the Lions took a two-point lead into the quarter-time break through goals to Bryce Retzlaff and Mitch Clark.

Drew Petrie epitomised North's up-and-down display with a brilliant mark on the back of Matt Maguire's inside 50, but inexplicably played on and kicked out on the full under pressure.

Brisbane: 10.13 (73) - J Brown 4, B Retzlaff, J Redden, L Power, M Clark, S Sheldon, T Banfield

North Melbourne: 8.11 (59) - A Edwards 3, D Petrie 2, L Thomas 2, B Harvey

Voss mindful of managing Brown

Updated May 20, 2011 15:37:00

Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss has ruled out deviating from his normal game plan against North Melbourne at the Gabba on Saturday night and will bench his courageous skipper Jonathan Brown when the time calls.

Voss said he would closely monitor Brown, returning after an eight-week lay-off with nasty facial injuries and bringing with him the chance for the Lions to end their embarrassing losing streak and notch their first win of the season.

However, Voss said to preserve his gun forward, he had two options.

"Conditioning is not an issue. It's whether the match condition has an effect," Voss said before training on Friday.

"We'll monitor that through the course of the game and he'll play deeper at times to give him a blow.

"We'll rotate him (off the bench) as normal, but it won't be abnormal rotations.

"He's been training with some of the coaches and the feedback we're getting is that he is in really good shape."

Brown sustained multiple fractures to his face during a marking contest in the opening round with the Lions in a strong winning position against Fremantle.

They lost that match and every game since.

His return has been salivating for Lions' fans and his "first-up" form is exemplary, giving more reason for Voss to rejoice at his availability.

Brown's most notable "first-up" game was round six in 2005 when - after serving a five-match ban for belting Port Adelaide's Josh Carr in the 2004 grand final - he took 14 marks and kicked eight goals in a match-winning display against Essendon.

"It certainly helps your cause (that he is playing). There is no doubt about that," Voss said.

"You always want to be not reliant on your star players to be able to get us results, but the fact is that is why they are good players, because they help you get it.

"I'd love for him to take 16 marks, kick eight goals and look like he owns the footy, but that's certainly not the expectation.

"Nor should he expect that of himself."

Brown completed the last training session at the Gabba without any sign of concern for his fitness or his injury.

Voss said any doubts Brown might have had about his fractures were put to bed in a sparring session at the local gym.

"The last five or six weeks, he has been able to run and do everything," Voss said.

"He's built on courage.

"He was in the boxing ring last week and asked for a couple of punches to the jaw just to test it out."

Brown returns for Lions

Updated May 19, 2011 18:43:00

Brisbane has regained powerhouse forward Jonathan Brown for his first match since round one following the skipper's recovery from facial fractures.

Brown required surgery following his horrific clash with Fremantle's Luke McPharlin during their round one AFL game at the Gabba.

The last-placed Lions host 13th-placed North Melbourne at the Gabba on Saturday night, with the return of Brown giving the home side fresh hope of scoring its first win of the season.

The Lions have also included 18-year-old debutant midfielder Josh Green and 22-year-old forward Matt Austin.

Utility Ash McGrath has been left out because of hamstring soreness, while Josh Drummond has had knee surgery and Ryan Harwood is omitted.

Drummond copped a knock on his troublesome left knee early in last weekend's match against Essendon when the Lions slumped to their seventh straight defeat of the season.

Scans revealed cartilage damage to the joint he had reconstructed last year but medics believe the meniscus tear will not affect his previous injury.

The set-back is a cruel blow for the 28-year-old radar boot, who has managed just two senior matches for the Lions over the past 12 months.

"The injury actually happened in the first contest of the game - within the first 30 seconds - but I was able to play out the game," Drummond said.

"It's definitely frustrating, particularly as I was just getting used to playing senior footy again and building my match fitness. I thought I was only a week or two away from playing my best footy."

The undefeated Geelong have lost three players to injury for Friday night's blockbuster against Carlton at Docklands.

Cats skipper Cameron Ling has failed to recover from a shoulder problem while Tom Lonergan (calf) and Daniel Menzel (shins) are also out of the side.

Taylor Hunt and veteran defender Darren Milburn return for the Cats and 19-year-old Nathan Vardy will be on debut.

Fourth-placed Carlton recalled midfielder Brock McLean and defender Jeremy Laidler for Aaron Joseph (omitted) and injured utility Ed Curnow.

Meanwhile St Kilda has dropped Jason Gram, Andrew McQualter and Ben McEvoy as coach Ross Lyon followed through on his threat to swing the axe at selection on Thursday.

Lyon conceded he needed to get stronger on selection issues after St Kilda's five-goal loss to Hawthorn.

"If the players don't deliver what's required, other players will get that opportunity," Lyon had warned on Tuesday.

Gram, McQualter and McEvoy all played in last year's AFL grand final replay.

The 15th-placed Saints have lost Steven Baker on a striking ban, but Leigh Montagna returns from suspension.

Nicholas Winmar, a 20-year-old second cousin to St Kilda great Nicky Winmar, will make his debut.

Jason Blake and Brett Peake also return for the Saints who host Melbourne at Docklands on Saturday.

Melbourne recalled Jared Rivers from injury and named Michael Evans for his debut.

The Demons could not consider Rohan Bail, Austin Wonaeamirri and Colin Garland because of injuries while Lynden Dunn is suspended and Jamie Bennell was dropped.

Richmond dropped Angus Graham and Ben Nason for Saturday night's Dreamtime clash at the MCG against Essendon.

The Tigers lost Shane Edwards because of a cheekbone fracture but regained Shane Tuck from injury.

Essendon recalled Alwyn Davey, Brent Stanton and Henry Slattery for injured skipper Jobe Watson, suspended tagger Heath Hocking and Travis Colyer.

Fremantle regained goalsneak Hayden Ballantyne from injury while Rhys Palmer was included along with Dylan Roberton and 25-year-old debutant Tendai Mzungu.

Ex-Magpie Jack Anthony, Jay van Berlo and Jayden Pitt were dropped and Adam McPhee has a knee injury.

Port Adelaide, who hosts Fremantle at Football Park on Saturday, recalled Jasper Pittard for Daniel Stewart.

Sydney named miracle man Nick Malceski for Sunday's SCG clash with Hawthorn.

The half-back had major knee surgery just 11 weeks ago.

Hawthorn regain rover Cyril Rioli from a hamstring injury and ruckman Max Bailey was also named in the squad in what would be his first game since 2009 following a third knee reconstruction.

Collingwood left out Alan Toovey because of a chest injury and kept premiership ruckman Darren Jolly (knee) on the sidelines.

The second-placed Magpies regained skipper Nick Maxwell from a calf injury for Sunday's game at Docklands against Adelaide, who in turn recalled forward Taylor Walker.

Western Bulldogs regained Barry Hall from an ankle injury for Sunday's clash with West Coast at Subiaco.

Shaun Higgins also returns alongside Tom Williams, Easton Wood and teenager Mitch Wallis.

Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney was rested with a knee injury.

The Eagles regained premiership heroes Daniel Kerr and Andrew Embley from injury.

Brown gets green light for Lions return

Posted May 19, 2011 15:13:00

Brisbane Lions captain Jonathan Brown has been cleared to make his long-awaited AFL comeback from horrific facial injuries in Saturday night's clash with North Melbourne at the Gabba.

Brown received a medical clearance on Thursday morning from his surgeon, Dr Alistair Reid, and is set to line up in the Lions goalsquare at the Gabba.

The Brisbane power forward suffered multiple facial fractures in this season's opening round after a collision with Fremantle's Luke McPharlin, leaving him sidelined for eight weeks.

Brown this week said he held no concerns about suffering any knocks to his face and felt confident about his fitness despite the long lay-off and a preseason where he did not play.

Brown to tone down aggression

Posted May 11, 2011 14:53:00

Remorseful Gold Coast defender Campbell Brown will tone down his aggressive style in the wake of Melbourne midfielder Jack Trengove's suspension.

Brown says he is aware the tribunal is taking a harder stance after being sidelined for four matches for two separate incidents in the loss to Western Bulldogs last month.

And Trengove's three-match penalty on Tuesday night for a slinging tackle on Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield gave Brown further pause for thought.

"When you're out there playing you don't think too much about [being aggressive], but there's been a fair bit spoken about it and I've seen the replay [of my own incident] and it's one of those things the game is changing," Brown said.

"As players, almost week-to-week, we need to adapt to that, whether it be rule changes or the way the tribunal interprets things.

"I am going to have to work at that.

"I will still try and keep that aggressive streak and, as you saw with the Trengove suspension, with tackling and things like that you have to be a lot more cautious these days, especially around the ball and when players have their head over it."

Ironically, Brown's suspension ended up being more costly for him than for the Suns.

He missed playing in their historic first win over Port Adelaide and the shock eight-point victory against Brisbane last Saturday night at the Gabba.

Eagles' Brown out for 8-10 weeks

Updated April 18, 2011 20:36:00

West Coast defender Mitch Brown has been ruled out for 8-10 weeks with a fractured thumb, dealing the Eagles' already-depleted AFL backline another massive blow.

Brown suffered the injury during West Coast's seven-point loss to Hawthorn on Saturday, but bravely battled on.

The 22-year-old joins fellow Eagles defenders Beau Waters (elbow) and Brett Jones (arm) on the injury list, while forward Mark LeCras (groin) and midfielder Chris Masten (knee) are still two weeks away from resuming.

Jones, a premiership defender who has shown solid form in the WAFL this season, would have been the frontrunner to replace Brown but suffered a hairline fracture in his arm while playing for Claremont on Saturday.

The Eagles (2-2) have a bye this weekend before hosting Melbourne on April 28.

Waters is adamant he will play again this season, saying his latest elbow injury is not nearly as bad as the one that threatened his career two years ago.

Waters was sidelined for 18 months when he dislocated his left elbow in mid-2008 but said the right elbow he dislocated in round two wasn't as serious.

"It feels really good, the surgeon's very confident," Waters said on Monday.

"The fact that it's a different dislocation - the left elbow (that I injured in 2008) was out for a lot longer, (because) both ligaments were severely damaged.

"This is only a one-ligament injury.

"I know what needs to be done, I know what I can push and what I can't push."

Waters, who was almost certain to take over the captaincy from Darren Glass at the end of the year, said he had given little thought to whether the injury could hamper his leadership ambitions.

"I think about my role as the vice-captain and how I can best play that.

"If I'm playing football or not playing football on game day, I think I'm still a good leader around the club."

Waters joined forces with team-mates Daniel Kerr, Ashton Hams, Sam Butler, Josh Kennedy and Ash Smith on Monday to help promote the Cancer Council's Me No Hair charity - a campaign Waters has been involved with for six years.

AFL admits Brown doubly lucky

Updated April 13, 2011 05:43:00

The AFL has admitted Gold Coast's Campbell Brown was doubly lucky to only receive a two-game suspension for striking Western Bulldogs opponent Callan Ward.

League operations manager Adrian Anderson said the Bulldogs' medical report on Ward, plus the match review panel's decision to grade the contact as reckless rather than intentional, saved the Suns hard man a longer ban.

Brown took the early plea for his two controversial incidents during Saturday's game.

He also accepted a two-game suspension for high contact with key forward Barry Hall, meaning he will miss the next four matches.

There has been a strong reaction to the two Brown penalties, with several AFL commentators arguing the Ward punishment should have been harsher.

But neither Ward or Hall were injured in the incidents.

Brown threw his elbow back and caught Ward in the face, briefly stunning him.

"I've heard a lot of comparisons with elbows and king hits and whatever, in all of those cases you've got a bloke with either a broken jaw or concussed or out for several weeks," Anderson said on radio station 3AW about the Ward incident.

"That worked in his favour."

Had the panel ruled the Ward strike was intentional rather than reckless, Brown would have faced a three-game ban with an early plea.

"It is on the lighter side," Anderson admitted.

"The reason why the match review panel did that is because he wasn't looking at Ward when he threw his arm back.

"They weren't satisfied he intended to hit him the way he did, that could have gone either way ... I can see their argument.

"It's not clearly wrong, I don't think."

Losing their vice-captain for a month is another blow for the fledgling Suns after they started their debut season with big losses to Carlton and the Bulldogs.

Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna admitted on Tuesday that Brown must earn back his team-mates' trust.

McKenna said a "remorseful" Brown addressed the young Suns playing group as they prepared for this weekend's clash with Melbourne.

"I spoke to him over the course of the weekend (and) he addressed the playing group today," he said.

"Obviously he was remorseful to the playing group.

"He understands that he has let them down.

"He has to earn back their trust - which I am sure he will do."

Also on Tuesday, Adelaide ruckman Ivan Maric became the first player this year to challenge his charge at the tribunal.

But his plea against a rough conduct charge was unsuccessful.

Maric still remains eligible to play in Saturday's Showdown against Port Adelaide because his penalty was a reprimand and carryover points.

Brown accepts four-match ban

Posted April 12, 2011 11:52:00

Gold Coast defender Campbell Brown will miss the next four AFL games for his part in two incidents in the AFL clash with Western Bulldogs at the weekend.

Brown has opted not to contest a two-match ban for striking Western Bulldogs player Callan Ward during last Saturday's game at Docklands stadium.

And he also accepted a two-match suspension for making forceful contact against Bulldogs forward Barry Hall.

Richmond's Jack Riewoldt accepted a $900 fine for making an obscene gesture to the Hawthorn bench on Saturday while St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt and Essendon's Cale Hooker will be fined $900 for wrestling.

But the AFL tribunal will sit tonight, with Adelaide's Ivan Maric contesting a rough conduct charge against Fremantle's Michael Walters, which drew a one-match ban.

Brown must earn back trust: McKenna

Updated April 12, 2011 18:35:00

Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna admits Campbell Brown must earn back his team-mates' trust after accepting a four-week AFL ban on Tuesday.

The former Hawthorn defender will miss the next four games for his part in two incidents in the clash with the Western Bulldogs at the weekend.

Brown opted not to contest a two-match ban for striking Callan Ward during last Saturday's game at Docklands.

And he also accepted a two-match suspension for making forceful contact against Bulldogs forward Barry Hall.

McKenna said a "remorseful" Brown addressed the young Suns playing group on Tuesday as they prepared for this weekend's clash with Melbourne.

"I spoke to him over the course of the weekend (and) he addressed the playing group today," he said.

"Obviously he was remorseful to the playing group.

"He understands that he has let them down.

"He has to earn back their trust - which I am sure he will do.

"He's deputy vice-captain ... we would like to think all of our players, not just our leaders, make good decisions on and off the field."

Asked what he thought of the four-week penalty, McKenna said: "Four weeks is four weeks and we will accept that.

"One of the things when we recruited Browny was because of his hardness and his attack on the football.

"But we want to play hard and fair - we certainly don't want to play outside the rules.

"The rules are quite clear. Unfortunately he has crossed that line. He takes his medicine and we move on."

McKenna admitted Brown left a big hole in a Suns outfit that had been hopeful of registering an historic first win against Melbourne at the Gabba on Sunday.

"He was just starting to run across the ground after an interrupted preseason," McKenna said.

"He's certainly part of the glue that binds our defence together alongside Nathan Bock.

"His leadership and his hardness will be sorely missed."

Brown facing at least four-game ban

Posted April 11, 2011 17:34:00

Gold Coast defender Campbell Brown could miss as many as five games through suspension in the wake of Saturday's AFL loss to the Western Bulldogs.

The match review panel charged Brown with striking Callan Ward and for making front-on contact with Barry Hall.

Even if Brown does not take either case to the tribunal, he will be out for four matches.

Under the match penalty guidelines, Brown would miss five games if he accepted the Ward suspension, but took the Hall case to the tribunal and lost.

The match review panel charged Brown with a level-three striking offence against Ward.

His existing bad record meant that penalty stayed at two games, regardless of whether Brown takes it to the tribunal.

Brown's bad record increased his penalty for the contact with Hall from two to three games.

An early plea would reduce that penalty to two matches.

Brown only had 2.5 demerit points, which saved him from a higher penalty for the Ward striking charge.

Also on Monday, the panel fined the Riewoldt cousins for incidents during the weekend's games.

St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt and Essendon opponent Cale Hooker can accept $900 fines for wrestling each other.

Richmond key forward Jack Riewoldt was also fined $900 for his much-publicised obscene gesture during the Saturday night loss to Hawthorn.

Adelaide ruckman Ivan Maric can accept a reprimand for rough conduct against Fremantle's Michael Walters.
