Grundy heads to tribunal, Johnson accepts ban

Updated September 04, 2012 13:57:53

Sydney's Heath Grundy is contesting his one-match ban at the AFL tribunal tonight in the hope of featuring against Adelaide on Saturday, but Geelong has accepted Steve Johnson will not play against Fremantle.

Grundy connected with a swinging elbow on James Podsiadly's chin but the Swans are hoping he will be free for the key game at Football Park.

Grundy has little to lose, as his ban would remain at one game whether he took the early guilty plea or was unsuccessful at the tribunal.

Cats talisman Johnson, who was also in danger of being out for two weeks, has accepted a penalty for rough conduct after clashing with the Swans' Daniel Hannebery

Because of his previous poor disciplinary record, Johnson would have been hit with a two-match suspension had he been unsuccessful in challenging the charge.

Geelong officials gave serious thought to challenging Johnson's level one rough conduct charge in an incident involving Sydney's Dan Hannebery, before deciding it was not worth the risk.

Elsewhere, Gold Coast's Campbell Brown will miss the first six games of next season after accepting a charge of level four bumping or making forceful contact from front-on offence.

St Kilda's Leigh Montagna is appealing his level one rough conduct charge against Carlton's Andrew Walker when he pushed him to the ground at the end of a melee during the MCG clash on Sunday.

He was offered the opportunity to accept a one-week penalty. His case will be heard next week.

The Saints' Stephen Milne and Tom Simpkin and Carlton's Walker all accepted fines of $900 for wrestling, while the Blues' Mitch Robinson accepted a $3,000 fine for the same offence.

All other players have accepted the charges levelled against them.

Shuey accepts one-match ban

Updated May 29, 2012 13:24:47

West Coast's Luke Shuey has accepted a one-match ban for striking Fremantle's Paul Duffield.

Shuey was charged over the incident in the fourth quarter of the western derby at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

He will miss the round 10 encounter with Brisbane.

Essendon Bombers midfielder David Zaharakis has avoided a one-week suspension by pleading guilty to striking Greater Western Sydney's Tomas Bugg on Saturday.

He carries forward 93.75 penalty points.

His Essendon team-mates Jake Carlisle and Alwyn Davey accepted fines for wrestling incidents in the Bombers' win.

North Melbourne's Luke Delaney accepted a $1,800 fine for instigating a first-quarter melee in the match against the Lions at Docklands on Sunday.

His Kangaroos team-mates Levi Greenwood, Scott Thompson, Michael Firrito, Jamie MacMillan and Nathan Grima and Lions players Jonathan Brown, Daniel Merrett, Aaron Cornelius, Rohan Bewick and Billy Longer all received $1,200 fines for their participation in the incident.

Walker accepts two-match ban

Updated May 15, 2012 11:50:57

Key Crows forward Taylor Walker has accepted a two-match ban and will miss important games against top eight sides Carlton and Collingwood.

Walker has been penalised over his tackle on Geelong defender Harry Taylor in the opening quarter of last weekend's clash at Football Park.

Walker, 22, had accepted a reprimand for his contact with Port Power defender Jacob Surjan back in round five.

He would have risked being out for three matches by contesting the charge at the AFL Tribunal.

Crows football operations manager Phil Harper said it was decided that was not worth the risk.

"We decided that it was too great a risk to contest the charge," he said.

"We certainly didn't think the impact was medium, we thought it was low, but it wasn't worth the possibility of a three-game ban."

Harper said Walker effectively could have missed four weeks of football because the Crows have a weekend off coming up.

Hunt accepts one-match ban

Posted May 31, 2011 12:16:00

Former rugby league star Karmichael Hunt will miss Gold Coast's clash with West Coast in Perth on Saturday after accepting a one-match sanction offered by the AFL match review panel.

Hunt was booked for an illegal front-on bump against Geelong ruckman Nathan Vardy last weekend.

He risked a two-match ban had he unsuccessfully challenged the charge at the tribunal.

North Melbourne defender Michael Firrito has also accepted a one-match ban after pleading guilty to engaging in rough conduct against Sydney's Ryan O'Keefe.

The tribunal will not be required to sit tonight after all of the players charged during round 10 submitted early guilty pleas.

St Kilda's Brett Peak accepted a reprimand and 70.31 points for striking Fremantle's Dylan Roberton.

Collingwood duo Luke Ball and Cameron Wood were reprimanded on tripping and rough conduct charges respectively during Sunday's win over Adelaide.

Adelaide's Rory Sloane and Melbourne's Colin Sylvia were each fined $900 for making negligent contact with an umpire.

Goodes accepts tripping reprimand

Posted May 24, 2011 12:00:00

Sydney's Adam Goodes has accepted a reprimand from the AFL's Match Review Panel for tripping Hawthorn's Brent Guerra.

The dual Brownlow Medallist remains eligible for this year's award after receiving a reprimand and 66 points towards his future record.

Carlton's Brock McLean, Richmond's Dylan Grimes, Melbourne's Joel MacDonald and Fremantle's Stephen Hill have also lodged early-guilty pleas and are free to play this weekend.

McLean accepted a $900 sanction for making negligent contact with umpire Chris Donlon during the first quarter of the round-nine match against Geelong at Docklands on Friday night.

Hill pleaded guilty to making negligent contact with umpire Stuart Wenn during the third quarter of the game against Port Adelaide at Football Park on Saturday and also accepted a $900 sanction.

MacDonald has been fined $900 for wrestling St Kilda's Nick Winmar during the half-time break of Saturday's game at Docklands.

Grimes accepted a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record for tripping Essendon's Leroy Jetta during the third quarter of Saturday night's clash at the MCG.

The AFL Tribunal will not sit on Tuesday night as no players are contesting charges.

Montagna accepts ban for bump

Updated May 11, 2011 14:16:00

Apologetic St Kilda star Leigh Montagna will miss Sunday's big AFL clash against Hawthorn after accepting a one-match suspension for bumping injured Carlton midfielder Ed Curnow.

Curnow injured his right shoulder in the opening quarter of the Blues' three-point victory at Docklands stadium and is likely to be sidelined for three to four weeks.

Montagna bumped into Curnow's injured shoulder before the youngster left the field to seek medical attention.

The Saints midfielder was charged with making unreasonable or unnecessary contact with an injured player.

He risked being banned for two weeks had he unsuccessfully contested the charge at the tribunal on Wednesday night.

Montagna has apologised to Curnow.

"It was definitely not my intention to cause any further distress to Curnow when I checked him while moving towards the contest," Montagna said.

"It was a split-second decision taken with no malicious intent.

"I agree that it is unacceptable to make contact with an injured player, even in the direct field of play, and therefore accept the one-match suspension."

The tribunal will not be required to sit on Wednesday after Montagna and all the players involved in a quarter-time melee lodged early guilty pleas.

Carlton skipper Chris Judd received the biggest fine of $3,000 for starting the melee.

Saint Jason Gram was docked $1,800, while teammates David Armitage and Sam Gilbert and Blues Aaron Joseph, Heath Scotland, Mitch Robinson and March Murphy were all slugged $1,200.

Brown accepts four-match ban

Posted April 12, 2011 11:52:00

Gold Coast defender Campbell Brown will miss the next four AFL games for his part in two incidents in the AFL clash with Western Bulldogs at the weekend.

Brown has opted not to contest a two-match ban for striking Western Bulldogs player Callan Ward during last Saturday's game at Docklands stadium.

And he also accepted a two-match suspension for making forceful contact against Bulldogs forward Barry Hall.

Richmond's Jack Riewoldt accepted a $900 fine for making an obscene gesture to the Hawthorn bench on Saturday while St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt and Essendon's Cale Hooker will be fined $900 for wrestling.

But the AFL tribunal will sit tonight, with Adelaide's Ivan Maric contesting a rough conduct charge against Fremantle's Michael Walters, which drew a one-match ban.
