Walker leads Crows to finals win

Updated September 15, 2012 11:48:41

Enigmatic forward Taylor Walker inspired Adelaide to a comeback 10-point victory over Fremantle in Friday night's semi-final.

Walker kicked five goals and set up another as the Crows overcame a fast-starting Fremantle to win 12.9 (81) to 11.5 (71) at Football Park.

Adelaide booked a preliminary final against Hawthorn next Saturday night by surviving an early ambush from Fremantle, whose season ended with the defeat.

Four of Walker's majors were clutch set shots, while fellow forward Jason Porplyzia potted three goals.

Fremantle's Chris Mayne also booted three goals and he was instrumental in the Dockers replicating their blazing start against Geelong last week.

The Dockers blitzed the Cats with a seven-goal opening term in their elimination final win.

And against Adelaide, Mayne kicked two goals in the initial three minutes of the game - a period in which the Crows logged just one disposal, a handball clanger.

His livewire team-mate Michael Walters goaled in the 12th minute of the opening term to leave the Crows shell-shocked.

Walters kicked another late in the quarter to create a 4.1 to 1.3 lead at quarter-time for the visitors.

Mayne slotted his third, and Hayden Ballantyne crumbed a goal inside four minutes of the second quarter to create a commanding 29-point advantage for the Dockers.

Adelaide appeared set to become the first club in 15 years to finish second and exit the finals with 'straight sets' losses.

But Walker triggered a stunning turnaround as the Crows responded with five of the next six goals - with the key Crow kicking three of them himself.

The Adelaide spearhead threaded a tight 40-metre set shot after the half-time siren to edge the Crows within 13 points.

Adelaide skipper Nathan van Berlo admitted this was a pivotal moment in the game.

"The boys came in with real positive energy at half-time," van Berlo said.

"A lot of the talk was 'we're coming hard at them'.

"There was a genuine belief. Taylor stood up a good few times.

"He's come along way this year but to stand up like he did ... in a big game speaks volumes for his leadership and his development."

After the break, Walker scored from near-identical opportunities - converting long set shots after strong overhead marks - as Adelaide crept within one point.

Utility Matthew Wright ran into an open goal in the 18th minute as the Crows hit the front for the first time in the match, and they held a five-point buffer at three quarter-time.

The Dockers weren't done with, posting two quick goals to open scoring in the last term and steal a seven-point advantage.

But with Walker again prominent, the Crows kicked the last four goals to keep their season alive.

Walker booted two of those, including a goal from the square in the 24th minute which was the final nail in Fremantle's coffin.

The only downside of victory was Jared Petrenko suffering an injury just before the final siren. It remains to be seen whether he will be fit to face the Hawks.

Adelaide: 12.9 (81) - Goals: T Walker 5, J Porplyzia 3, Dangerfield, Tippett, Vince, Wright

Fremantle: 11.5 (71) - Goals: C Mayne 3, M Walters 3, H Ballantyne, N Fyfe, G Ibbotson, M Pavlich, N Suban

Walker accepts two-match ban

Updated May 15, 2012 11:50:57

Key Crows forward Taylor Walker has accepted a two-match ban and will miss important games against top eight sides Carlton and Collingwood.

Walker has been penalised over his tackle on Geelong defender Harry Taylor in the opening quarter of last weekend's clash at Football Park.

Walker, 22, had accepted a reprimand for his contact with Port Power defender Jacob Surjan back in round five.

He would have risked being out for three matches by contesting the charge at the AFL Tribunal.

Crows football operations manager Phil Harper said it was decided that was not worth the risk.

"We decided that it was too great a risk to contest the charge," he said.

"We certainly didn't think the impact was medium, we thought it was low, but it wasn't worth the possibility of a three-game ban."

Harper said Walker effectively could have missed four weeks of football because the Crows have a weekend off coming up.

Walker cited for Taylor tackle

Updated May 14, 2012 18:06:26

Adelaide's Taylor Walker has been offered a two-match suspension by the match review panel for his heavy tackle on Geelong's Harry Taylor.

Walker was handed a level two engaging in rough conduct charge as a result of the incident that occurred during the opening quarter of the Crows' 50-point defeat of the Cats at Football Park on Saturday.

His previous record means the two-match cannot be reduced with an early guilty plea, but he has the option of contesting the charge at the tribunal.

Meanwhile, the Cats' Joel Corey can accept a $900 fine with an early guilty plea after being charged for making an obscene finger gesture during the clash with the Crows.

Walker fires Crows to Showdown win

Updated April 29, 2012 20:30:24

A six-goal haul to Taylor Walker proved the difference for Adelaide as the Crows won Showdown XXXII over rivals Port Adelaide by 19 points to secure a spot in the top four.

However Walker may face a nervous wait for the review panel, after the Crows forward collided with Jacob Surjan's shoulder after sliding into a contest with his knees.

Walker picked himself up to lead the Crows to a tense 16.14 (110) to 14.7 (91) win at Football Park following an unlikely comeback by Port Adelaide.

The victory puts Adelaide in the top four under first-year coach Brenton Sanderson, while Port Adelaide is anchored in the bottom eight on one win and four losses.

The Crows now faces Sydney and Geelong in the next two weeks.

"I think our next five going into the bye are all teams going pretty well,'' ruckman Sam Jacobs told Grandstand.

"We won't look past Sydney next week, and Sando has already touched on it - six days and get ready for the Swans.''

Jacobs said Sanderson was happy with the team's effort to seal the win.

"We spoke early in the week about how important Showdowns are to us, these are big games, and Sando just praised us a bit for the way we fought back in the last quarter,'' Jacobs said.

"It doesn't matter where Port is on the ladder or we are on the ladder, you know it's going to be a hard contest," Jacobs added.

"They (Port Adelaide) are the ones in front for the overall total (of Showdown wins), so it's our turn to peg some back.''

Adelaide has won the last two Showdowns - the overall record now stands at 17 wins for Port Adelaide and 15 wins for the Crows.

Adelaide started strongly, with Port Adelaide's defence having no answer to Showdown medallist Patrick Dangerfield, who racked up 12 possessions in the opening quarter on his way to a game-high 39 touches.

Port Adelaide also had to cope with the loss of tall forward Jay Schulz, who was subbed off at half-time after receiving an accidental poke in the eye by Adelaide's Michael Doughty.

Four first-half goals to Walker - including three in a frantic minute and a half at the start of the second term - gave Adelaide a potentially match-winning three-goal lead at the main break which inflated to 26 points in the third quarter.

But out of nowhere Port Adelaide strung five of the next six goals to the final change, including a shot on the run from Brad Ebert, and an heroic snap from Justin Westhoff while falling backwards from deep in the left forward pocket.

It was a six-goals-to-two quarter which lifted the Power back into the contest and put Port Adelaide up by three points at the final break.

In the final quarter a booming goal from Graham Johncock gave Adelaide some breathing space, before Walker kicked two more majors to seal the game.

Adelaide: 16.14 (110) - Walker 6, Petrenko 2, Johncock 2, Callinan, Jacobs, Wright, McKernan, Tippett, Thompson.

Port Adelaide: 14.7 (91) - Westhoff 4, Butcher 4, Ebert 2, Broadbent 2, Jacobs, Schulz.

Kevin Sheedy in Broken Hill - Giants 'may be' after Walker

Kevin Sheedy, the coach of new AFL outfit Greater Western Sydney, is in Broken Hill today encouraging support for his team and keeping an eye out for local talent.

On a trip that is taking in most of New South Wales and parts of the Northern Territory, Sheedy is spruiking his new club and connecting with junior and senior football leagues across the country.

He remained tight lipped about rumours his team are planning on making a bid for local talent, and current Crows player, Taylor Walker.

"Maybe our recruiting staff could be talking to his manager... but I would know more about that at the end of the season, on all the players off contract."

When it comes to players like Walker, Kevin is positive about The Giants' pulling power, saying "we've got a decent amount of money in our salary cap to go and find players off contract."

The west

Kevin Sheedy is hoping The Giants will be able to turn their large zone in regional New South Wales into a considerable support base of fans.

"Our zone really extends from the Homebush Olympic Stadium... and from there, right here to Broken Hill, down to Wentworth and right back to Eden and then goes up the coast of NSW to a little town called Berri.

"This first trip is about connecting with the people in our zone, particularly the junior footy league and the senior league here in Broken Hill."

Kevin says he's aware of the talent pool in Broken Hill and has had good fortune with local players in the past.

"Obviously I've had previous success with Dean Solomon out of Broken Hill; he was a marvellous player for the Bombers."

Wanting to distance his team from the struggling Gold Coast Suns who only had one year to recruit their squad, Kevin says The Giants still have plenty of time to make decisions regarding specific players.

Ultimately, he says, it is the sport of football itself that will be the big winner from new teams, such as Greater Western Sydney and the Gold Coast Suns, coming into the game.

"You know, having a new team come in in West Sydney, now that takes it up to about 800 contracts in AFL clubs and that's an amazing story in sport alone."

The Greater Western Sydney Giants will begin their first AFL preseason in February of 2012.

Crows lose Walker for month

Posted June 1, 2011 20:27:00

Adelaide forward Taylor Walker will miss at least the next AFL month with a knee injury.

Walker injured his right knee in Sunday's loss to Brisbane and was initially expected to miss just a fortnight.

But the Crows on Wednesday released a statement saying the 21-year-old forward will miss the next four or five games due to the injured posterior cruciate ligament.
