Reid sidelined for three weeks

Updated July 29, 2012 20:48:36

The Sydney Swans breathed a collective sign of relief after scans confirmed Sam Reid will only miss two or three weeks with a knee medial ligament.

Reid fell awkardly in a marking contest during the Swans' 72-point victory over the Suns on Saturday.

The 20-year-old forward will miss key upcoming games against Carlton and Collingwood, but crucially should be back to full fitness for the ladder leaders when the finals campaign begins.

Swans doctor Nathan Gibbs confirmed the news on Sunday in a club statement.

"Sam has suffered a partial tear of the medial ligament in his right knee," Gibbs said.

"The good news is that the scan revealed no other damage to the knee and that no surgery will be required."

Schulz out for 'several' weeks

Updated June 18, 2012 13:38:18

Port Adelaide's defeat to Western Bulldogs has been compounded by the news that key forward Jay Schulz will be sidelined for the immediate future with an abdominal injury.

Schulz remains in a Melbourne hospital after being struck in the stomach by a team-mate's knee while attempting to take a mark in the second quarter of the 38-point loss on Sunday.

The Power's leading scorer, with 28 goals, was taken to intensive care after the game where scans revealed isolated internal bleeding.

The 27-year-old is expected to remain in hospiral for several days where his condition will be closely monitored.

Port Adelaide released a statement saying he is likely to miss "several weeks of football."

It added: "the injury is not related to the bruising Schulz suffered to his ribs during the Power's Round 10 clash with Carlton."

Jurrah out for six weeks

Updated May 21, 2012 16:32:30

Melbourne forward Liam Jurrah will be sidelined for up to six weeks after suffering an ankle injury late in Saturday's 101-point drubbing by Sydney.

Jurrah suffered the injury late in his first senior match of the year.

It came only days after he faced the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on assault charges.

The Demons said on Monday that the ankle sprain would sideline Jurrah for four-to-six weeks.

"Liam has worked extremely hard to get back into the AFL team," said Demons football manager Josh Mahoney.

"Unfortunately, this is another injury setback.

"However, he has shown his ability to cope with injuries and respond in the past.

"We expect him to make a full recovery and return in the second half of the year."

Jurrah made a late start to Melbourne's 2012 campaign due to a wrist complaint.

The last-placed Demons have made a miserable start to the season under new coach Mark Neeld, losing their opening eight matches.

ABC Grandstand's expert summariser Tadhg Kennelly was especially damning of the team's effort at the SCG.

"You can make a choice to tackle, make a choice to put your head over the ball - you don't have to be the most gifted footballer in the world," Kennelly said.

"I could get my grandmother at 88 years of age (to) tackle. You don't need all the ability in the world to do that.

"The players are making the choice not to implement (their) game plan - these are things that you can control as a footballer.

"You mightn't be getting a kick and you mightn't be kicking great goals, but you can control your intensity, control your tackling, control your effort.

"And the effort's not there, it's quite embarrassing really for a football club to go through this for so long.

"Neeld must be going absolutely nuts up in the box, I'd hate to be up there as a coach.

"There are only so many movements, so many things you can do in rotations ... if the players' effort and intensity is not there, there's not a whole lot you can do except get rid of them.

"And that's as plain and simple as football comes.

"As a footballer, you want to get respect from the AFL community. I know playing with the Swans that every time you came against the Sydney Swans, you want 'em feeling after the game, win or lose, that 'God, that was a hard day at the office, 'God we worked hard.'

"Melbourne is losing so much respect with what's happening right now."

Suns lose Swallow for six weeks

Updated May 16, 2012 07:54:27

Gold Coast midfielder David Swallow has been ruled out for the next six weeks with a posterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 19-year-old emerging star suffered the knee injury during the Suns' 17-point loss to the Giants in Canberra on Saturday.

Scans confirmed the worst for Swallow on Tuesday with Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft saying the club will err on the side of caution in his recovery.

"We will treat the injury conservatively and at this early stage we anticipate that he will miss six weeks with the injury," Ashcroft said on the club's website.

"David is obviously an extremely important player for us and while we admire his determination to play, we need David fully fit in the future."

The Suns have been hit hard by injuries this year, with captain Gary Ablett and fellow midfielder Michael Rischitelli only returning last week after missing the last two matches.

Still on the sidelines are Brandon Matera (foot), Jarrod Harbrow (fractured elbow) and Nathan Bock (leg).

Swallow has been in the wars lately, but is hopeful of bouncing back strong.

"At the time I thought it was a hit to my leg and I didn't really think that it was the knee, I've had a pretty unlucky month, so it's pretty disappointing, but I'm looking forward to getting back out there," Swallow said.

"First the hip and then the ankle and now the knee, It's not ideal but that's footy, its the nature of the game and its unfortunate but we move on and hopefully the boys can perform."

Montagna to miss two weeks

Updated April 30, 2012 17:35:52

Star St Kilda midfielder Leigh Montagna has been handed a two-match ban after being charged with striking during his side's win over Melbourne on Saturday night.

Montagna was booked with a level three striking offence after an incident involving Demons midfielder James Magner in the first quarter at the MCG.

With his previous record and accumulated demerit points Montagna faces three weeks out but an early guilty plea would reduce his sentence to two rounds.

West Coast defender Will Schofield will also miss two matches after he was charged with striking Jack Riewoldt in the Eagles' win over Richmond at Docklands on Sunday afternoon.

Previous offences mean Schofield can not reduce his ban with an early plea.

Lions midfielder Andrew Raines faces a one-game suspension for a level four striking offence against Geelong star Joel Selwood on Saturday night at the Gabba.

The seriousness of the incident warranted a three-match ban but Raines' previous clean record means he can cut that sentence down to a single week out with an early plea.

Cats skipper Selwood was not charged over the incident.

Adelaide forward Taylor Walker and Bulldogs forward Patrick Veszpremi can both escape with demerit points and reprimands after separate incidents in round five.

And Gold Coast midfielder Kyal Horsely can accept a $900 fine instead of $1,200 with an early guilty plea for his first offence in front of the tribunal after being charged with negligent contact with an umpire.

The Suns fell to North Melbourne at Docklands on Saturday.

Blues' Laidler sidelined for six weeks

Updated March 05, 2012 22:31:30

Carlton defender Jeremy Laidler will have surgery and is out of action for up to six weeks because of his dislocated kneecap.

The Blues announced that Laidler would undergo an arthroscopy on Tuesday afternoon after suffering the gruesome injury during Sunday's preseason game against the Western Bulldogs.

Laidler met with a specialist and Carlton medical staff on Monday night.

He fell awkwardly during a marking contest in the first quarter of the game at Docklands.

Laidler's left kneecap was bulging to the lateral side as he battled severe pain, with fans gasping in horror at the replays on the video scoreboard.

Coach Brett Ratten said the Blues were able to put the kneecap back in place before Laidler was taken to hospital during Sunday's game.

Blues team-mate Ed Curnow said Laidler was a key member of Carlton's defence.

"He's shattered," Curnow said.

Curnow said he had been running around in midfield when Laidler was injured.

"I did have a quick look on the big screen and I got grossed out a bit myself," he said.

"I'm sure he's going to bounce back.

"We've got a lot of guys who can play that role, down back, that I'm sure will step up."

The Blues expect to regain forwards Jarrad Waite and Andrew Walker, onballers Chris Judd and Mitch Robinson and defender Nick Duigan for Saturday's round-three preseason cup game against Brisbane at Maroochydore.

Carlton's best defender Michael Jamison trained at Visy Park on Monday morning and is on track to overcome a back injury in time to play in round one against Richmond at the MCG on March 29, Curnow said.

The Blues are chasing a spot in the top four in 2012 after finishing strongly in fifth place last season following a heartbreaking three-point semi-final loss to West Coast in Perth.

The Blues have lost all three of their preseason cup games by single-figure margins and Curnow said experimenting with positional changes is a key factor at this stage of the year.

"We'll probably want to go into the season with a bit of winning form," he said.

"But we also want to try out guys in different positions, send Shaun Hampson up forward for a bit longer than he usually would play, little things like that."

Eagles' Brown out for 8-10 weeks

Updated April 18, 2011 20:36:00

West Coast defender Mitch Brown has been ruled out for 8-10 weeks with a fractured thumb, dealing the Eagles' already-depleted AFL backline another massive blow.

Brown suffered the injury during West Coast's seven-point loss to Hawthorn on Saturday, but bravely battled on.

The 22-year-old joins fellow Eagles defenders Beau Waters (elbow) and Brett Jones (arm) on the injury list, while forward Mark LeCras (groin) and midfielder Chris Masten (knee) are still two weeks away from resuming.

Jones, a premiership defender who has shown solid form in the WAFL this season, would have been the frontrunner to replace Brown but suffered a hairline fracture in his arm while playing for Claremont on Saturday.

The Eagles (2-2) have a bye this weekend before hosting Melbourne on April 28.

Waters is adamant he will play again this season, saying his latest elbow injury is not nearly as bad as the one that threatened his career two years ago.

Waters was sidelined for 18 months when he dislocated his left elbow in mid-2008 but said the right elbow he dislocated in round two wasn't as serious.

"It feels really good, the surgeon's very confident," Waters said on Monday.

"The fact that it's a different dislocation - the left elbow (that I injured in 2008) was out for a lot longer, (because) both ligaments were severely damaged.

"This is only a one-ligament injury.

"I know what needs to be done, I know what I can push and what I can't push."

Waters, who was almost certain to take over the captaincy from Darren Glass at the end of the year, said he had given little thought to whether the injury could hamper his leadership ambitions.

"I think about my role as the vice-captain and how I can best play that.

"If I'm playing football or not playing football on game day, I think I'm still a good leader around the club."

Waters joined forces with team-mates Daniel Kerr, Ashton Hams, Sam Butler, Josh Kennedy and Ash Smith on Monday to help promote the Cancer Council's Me No Hair charity - a campaign Waters has been involved with for six years.
