Suns lose Swallow for six weeks

Updated May 16, 2012 07:54:27

Gold Coast midfielder David Swallow has been ruled out for the next six weeks with a posterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 19-year-old emerging star suffered the knee injury during the Suns' 17-point loss to the Giants in Canberra on Saturday.

Scans confirmed the worst for Swallow on Tuesday with Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft saying the club will err on the side of caution in his recovery.

"We will treat the injury conservatively and at this early stage we anticipate that he will miss six weeks with the injury," Ashcroft said on the club's website.

"David is obviously an extremely important player for us and while we admire his determination to play, we need David fully fit in the future."

The Suns have been hit hard by injuries this year, with captain Gary Ablett and fellow midfielder Michael Rischitelli only returning last week after missing the last two matches.

Still on the sidelines are Brandon Matera (foot), Jarrod Harbrow (fractured elbow) and Nathan Bock (leg).

Swallow has been in the wars lately, but is hopeful of bouncing back strong.

"At the time I thought it was a hit to my leg and I didn't really think that it was the knee, I've had a pretty unlucky month, so it's pretty disappointing, but I'm looking forward to getting back out there," Swallow said.

"First the hip and then the ankle and now the knee, It's not ideal but that's footy, its the nature of the game and its unfortunate but we move on and hopefully the boys can perform."

Swallow chosen as new North skipper

Updated February 07, 2012 12:20:00

Midfielder Andrew Swallow has been appointed captain of North Melbourne, replacing veteran Brent Harvey.

Swallow, 24, was also chosen ahead of Drew Petrie, 29, who remains a vice-captain and is joined in that role by 20-year-old Jack Ziebell.

Coach Brad Scott said Swallow embodied everything the club aspired to and was a unanimous choice.

Harvey, 33, was keen to continue as skipper but accepted the club needed to have a transition phase and he will take on a mentoring role as he continues to play.
