Hawks lose Osborne for season

Hawthorn's Michael Osborne will miss the rest of the 2012 season after the club announced he will go under the knife for a knee reconstruction.

Osborne suffered a "high grade but incomplete" anterior cruciate ligament tear in a tackle in Friday night's win over Melbourne.

The Hawks said in a statement on Tuesday that Osborne consulted with doctors and specialists and opted for a traditional knee reconstruction rather than the new LARS treatment.

Hawthorn general manager for football operations Mark Evans said the 29-year-old had handled the seriousness of the injury with class.

"While it's extremely disappointing for Michael, his commitment and dedication to a strong rehabilitation is first-class," he said.

"Michael's a vibrant member of the playing group and is well respected by his team-mates, and we look forward to having him back at the club after a short stint away following his surgery."

Hawks' Osborne sidelined with ACL injury

Hawthorn has confirmed Michael Osborne suffered an anterior cruciate ligament and lateral ligament injury in Friday's victory over Melbourne.

Although scans showed a high grade injury in Osborne's left knee, as it is an incomplete tear the Hawks will seek specialist advice in the week before judging how to treat the injury.

The injury came when Osborne was tackled while attempting a kick in the final quarter of his side's 66-point rout of the Demons at the MCG.

Osborne is the second Hawk to suffer an ACL this season after Alex Woodward injured his knee during the preseason.

The blow comes just as Stephen Gilham made a successful return on Friday after 12 months out with the same injury.
