Dees president defends Neeld

Updated May 22, 2012 11:23:02

Melbourne president Don McLardy has thrown his full support behind coach Mark Neeld and called on the players at the under-siege club to lift.

As the Demons reel from Saturday night's 101-point capitulation to Sydney, McLardy made it clear that in his opinion, the coach is not the reason for their on-field plight.

Melbourne is winless after eight games under Neeld, who is in his debut season as a senior coach.

McLardy wrote an open letter to Melbourne supporters on Monday and then gave a television interview where he backed the new coach.

"We interviewed extensively for the role, Mark clearly had a lot of attributes that we were seeking and he's done nothing so far to show us that he's not the man," McLardy told Fox Sports.

"We're very confident in the structure he's put in place, the people around him, his game plan - he's very convinced about his game plan.

"We just need our players to buy into that and start performing."

Much of the criticism of Melbourne's bad start to the season continues to centre on its senior players.

"I'd expect our senior players to really respond to the criticism ... of them," McLardy said.

One of those experienced players, midfielder Colin Sylvia, was seen sharing a joke with Sydney opponent Josh Kennedy at the final siren.

"I'm sure Mark Neeld is sitting there and I'm sure Colin Sylvia is sitting there a bit worried about that as well," McLardy said.

"I expect some reaction."

While McLardy said the Demons are unhappy about talk that some players might try to leave the club at the end of this season when the AFL goes to limited free agency, he added Melbourne would be ready for the new-look player market.

"The whole world is changing at the end of this year, we know that," he said.

"We see that as a negative - yep, we've got a few guys and the market is being tested, we understand that.

"But it's also a positive for us, we're in a position where we will go out and we have a structure in place to assess every possible person who may be interested in coming to our footy club."

Sydney's Irish star Tadhg Kennelly said after beating Melbourne that his compatriot and former Demons president Jim Stynes would be turning in his grave.

But McLardy, a great friend of Stynes', said he was disappointed at that comment.

"What Jim would be saying is `no, we know what we're doing, we have a plan, let's be brave enough now to stick to it and see it through'," McLardy said.

He was also adamant that off the field, the club was not in crisis.

In his letter, McLardy called on Melbourne fans to be patient.

"Even though things seem extremely tough, we need the continued support from everyone who has a passion for Melbourne," he said.

Dees back Neeld over rumour

Updated April 03, 2012 15:01:30

Melbourne co-captain Jack Grimes says coach Mark Neeld is justified in wanting to know the source of allegations about his treatment of the club's Indigenous players.

Grimes says Neeld told the players on Monday of a rumour that has been circulating about him and they are so stunned that they initially thought it might be a joke.

The Demons are furious at the allegation that Neeld spoke with non-indigenous players individually over the preseason, but only addressed Indigenous players as a group.

The club has asked the AFL to investigate.

"He (Neeld) was pretty hurt by it and pretty taken aback," Grimes said.

"It was almost like blokes thought it was a joke, because it couldn't be further from the truth.

"We didn't know where it came from, we didn't know why the comments were made.

"But we could tell it had affected him a fair bit, because it's a fair sledge to have at someone, to say a comment like that.

"It definitely affected him and his family and he probably has the right to look into it a bit more."

Former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas made the rumour public in a blog posted on Monday, but took down the comment after Neeld rang him to protest.

The Demons are under fire after opening the season with a bad loss to Brisbane on Saturday at the MCG.

They now go to Perth to face in-form West Coast.

Grimes also dismissed a suggestion that Neeld's tough attitude has alienated the players.

"I did hear that and I just thought it was a ridiculous thing to say after one game," he said.

"It couldn't be further from the truth ... we're right behind him."

Watts backed by Neeld

Updated March 04, 2012 17:09:27

Melbourne coach Mark Neeld has defended Jack Watts insisting it is too early to make a judgment on the former number one draft pick.

Watts, who has played 40 games for the Demons since being selected first in the 2008 draft, was criticised by Mick Malthouse and Wayne Carey during the Demons' victory over Collingwood on Saturday night.

The three-time premiership winning coach said "Watts has to lift his intensity" and is "happy to take the back seat in the marking contest, while former North Melbourne great Carey added on Melbourne radio that the player "is out of touch and needs to get more involved".

Neeld insists Watts remains a key factor in Melbourne's rising hopes for the 2012 campaign and says he has plenty of time for him to reach his potential.

"People talk about his 'whole career' - well, his whole career is about two years long," Neeld said.

"He's got some special talents - there are not too many players who can influence a game with low possession counts - I think he can.

"He's got some tricks (and) I thought his defensive work (against Collingwood) was really good.

"He's still got a developing body, he's going to get bigger over the years. He's got some tricks and I thought his defensive work tonight was really good. I think he had a high inside 50 count for someone who a lot of the time was playing deep.

"He's a good young talent and I'm pretty happy to have him on our list."
