Koch is new Port president: reports

Updated October 01, 2012 19:40:53

Sydney-based Seven Network identity David Koch is reportedly set to be named Port Adelaide's new president.

Koch, host of Seven's breakfast program Sunrise and with a background in finance journalism, has been anointed the Power's next leader by various media outlets.

Adelaide newspaper The Advertiser's website says the Power are set to adopt five new board members including Koch.

The Age also reported Koch would be named president on Tuesday, but that an announcement on ex-coach Matthew Primus's replacement was not expected.

A Port official said on Monday the club would not comment about the speculation.

Power president Brett Duncanson announced in August he would stand down in December.

Koch is the Power's number one ticket holder and, if the report is correct, would follow in the footsteps of fellow television personalities and AFL club presidents Eddie McGuire (Collingwood) and James Brayshaw (North Melbourne).

While on-field success has been limited in the past few seasons, Koch's biggest challenge would be turning around the club's perilous financial state from afar.

He would also offer a profile beyond South Australia.

The AFL Commission and the SA Football Commission are helping fund the debt-ridden AFL club.

Dees president defends Neeld

Updated May 22, 2012 11:23:02

Melbourne president Don McLardy has thrown his full support behind coach Mark Neeld and called on the players at the under-siege club to lift.

As the Demons reel from Saturday night's 101-point capitulation to Sydney, McLardy made it clear that in his opinion, the coach is not the reason for their on-field plight.

Melbourne is winless after eight games under Neeld, who is in his debut season as a senior coach.

McLardy wrote an open letter to Melbourne supporters on Monday and then gave a television interview where he backed the new coach.

"We interviewed extensively for the role, Mark clearly had a lot of attributes that we were seeking and he's done nothing so far to show us that he's not the man," McLardy told Fox Sports.

"We're very confident in the structure he's put in place, the people around him, his game plan - he's very convinced about his game plan.

"We just need our players to buy into that and start performing."

Much of the criticism of Melbourne's bad start to the season continues to centre on its senior players.

"I'd expect our senior players to really respond to the criticism ... of them," McLardy said.

One of those experienced players, midfielder Colin Sylvia, was seen sharing a joke with Sydney opponent Josh Kennedy at the final siren.

"I'm sure Mark Neeld is sitting there and I'm sure Colin Sylvia is sitting there a bit worried about that as well," McLardy said.

"I expect some reaction."

While McLardy said the Demons are unhappy about talk that some players might try to leave the club at the end of this season when the AFL goes to limited free agency, he added Melbourne would be ready for the new-look player market.

"The whole world is changing at the end of this year, we know that," he said.

"We see that as a negative - yep, we've got a few guys and the market is being tested, we understand that.

"But it's also a positive for us, we're in a position where we will go out and we have a structure in place to assess every possible person who may be interested in coming to our footy club."

Sydney's Irish star Tadhg Kennelly said after beating Melbourne that his compatriot and former Demons president Jim Stynes would be turning in his grave.

But McLardy, a great friend of Stynes', said he was disappointed at that comment.

"What Jim would be saying is `no, we know what we're doing, we have a plan, let's be brave enough now to stick to it and see it through'," McLardy said.

He was also adamant that off the field, the club was not in crisis.

In his letter, McLardy called on Melbourne fans to be patient.

"Even though things seem extremely tough, we need the continued support from everyone who has a passion for Melbourne," he said.

SANFL finances improving, says president

Updated March 20, 2012 10:28:14

SANFL president John Olsen says the league's financial performance improved last year, aside of one-off costs.

The SANFL has reported a loss of $3.8 million, which has been attributed to support given to troubled Port Adelaide Football Club in 2010.

Mr Olsen said aside of that cost there would have been surplus of about $1 million for 2011.

"Our first quarter results this year show yet again a slight improvement," he said.

"In that context we've stabilised factors that have had significant negative impact in 2010.

"We've seen a turnaround evident in 2011. Now what we've got to do in 2012 is move that into positive territory."

Jim Stynes to stand down as Demons president

Updated February 01, 2012 14:46:04

Jim Stynes is expected to stand down as Melbourne president at the AFL club's annual general meeting tonight to focus on his battle with cancer.

While Stynes, 45, has led Melbourne out of debt and unified a disjointed club, he has also had more than 20 tumours removed and undergone six bouts of brain surgery.

The Irishman was diagnosed in 2009 with cancer which spread from his back to other parts of his body, including his brain.

He announced in July that year he was taking a break as Melbourne president, but returned to the role, often looking frail but always providing an inspirational presence at the club.

Stynes, who played 264 games for the Demons and won the 1991 Brownlow Medal and four Melbourne best and fairest awards, took over the presidency in June 2008 in a passionate bid to revive the ailing club.

It is expected that acting president Don McLardy will be appointed as Stynes's successor.
