Clubs fined for SANFL breaches

Updated December 11, 2012 14:52:25

SANFL clubs West Adelaide and Port Adelaide have been fined for salary cap breaches.

The Bloods have been fined $50,000 and banned from recruiting outside their boundary zone next year, except for the mini-draft.

They exceeded the salary cap by more than $38,000.

Port also was fined $50,000 but will not face recruiting penalties because its salary cap breach was smaller and due to administrative errors.

SANFL executive Chris Davies said the league had sent an important message to clubs.

"That both clubs must now pay $50,000 fines is a reminder of the serious consequences of breaching the salary cap," he said.

"Clubs are fully aware of the regulations and the consequences if found guilty."

Redlegs cap SANFL season in style

Updated October 08, 2012 14:08:42

Norwood has claimed its first SANFL premiership in 15 years, beating West Adelaide by 49 points at Football Park.

After the Bloods missed some early opportunities, the Redlegs pulled away in the second quarter and put West Adelaide to the sword in the third, kicking 31 points to two.

The onslaught continued in the final term, before West salvaged two goals in time-on.

The grand final scoreline was 12.7.(79) to 3.12.(30).

Norwood's Dean Terlich collected 31 possessions and was awarded the Jack Oatey medal for best on ground.

Midfielder James Gallagher also stood out. He said the win was a fitting reward for a season of hard work.

"To a man, everyone just played their role, we're really strong and that's what it takes," he said.

SANFL finances improving, says president

Updated March 20, 2012 10:28:14

SANFL president John Olsen says the league's financial performance improved last year, aside of one-off costs.

The SANFL has reported a loss of $3.8 million, which has been attributed to support given to troubled Port Adelaide Football Club in 2010.

Mr Olsen said aside of that cost there would have been surplus of about $1 million for 2011.

"Our first quarter results this year show yet again a slight improvement," he said.

"In that context we've stabilised factors that have had significant negative impact in 2010.

"We've seen a turnaround evident in 2011. Now what we've got to do in 2012 is move that into positive territory."

TV deal close for SANFL games

Updated February 16, 2012 12:54:26

The South Australian National Football League says it understands the ABC will telecast local football on ABC 1 again this season.

The SANFL spent about $70,000 last year to support 28 match day broadcasts.

The ABC had wanted more funding to cover games this season.

Darren Chandler from the SANFL says agreement is close on a higher contribution this year.

"The ABC, we understand, are gearing up to cover the 2012 season and you know we've been working with the ABC to finalise the contract and hopefully that'll be announced in the near future," he said.

"It (SANFL funding) is more than last year and once we've finalised a deal we'll be more than happy to release that.

"We understand that the ABC have got their own pressures, but they certainly are fully aware of how much South Australian football and the SANFL competition means to the public of South Australia."

SANFL season starts to hot up

The SANFL continues to provide huge interest with Round 14 providing plenty to chat about.

After South Adelaide took fifth spot from Port Adelaide on Saturday after a rare win at Alberton, Glenelg regained it with their victory over West Adelaide at the Bay on Sunday.

The Eagles were pipped by a late goal from Centrals Eddie Sansbury at Woodville Oval, appropriately in the SA Indigenous Round.

Sturt gave bottom place to North Adelaide after a ten point's success at Prospect.

They had trailed by seventeen points at half time and after a big loss to Norwood it was an outstanding comeback.

Matthew Duldig led the Double Blues Goal Scores with four and their win was made better by the late withdrawal of Captain Jade Sheedy.

What an important match for both Sturt and Port Adelaide at Unley Oval on Saturday.

Norwood in second place comes off the Bye and Hosts North Adelaide at the Parade also on Saturday.

The Roosters have disappointed under new Coach Josh Francou - they don't seem to be able to put four good quarters together.

West Adelaide after three losses in a row will be grateful for the Bye to regroup.

The Bloods seem to have incurred the wrath of the Umpires leading to the usual mild mannered coach Andy Collins venting his spleen regarding three decisions, which enabled the Tigers to regain the lead at half time and go on win by forty five points.

New Tigers Coach Kris Massie was just relieved for his players and the club which was celebrating their 90th Birthday.

Fifth placed Glenelg are at home again on Sunday to the third placed Woodville-West Torrens who really needs a spark.

Their endeavour wasn't questioned by Coach Michael Godden against the Bulldogs, but good sides win the close ones.

After being thrashed in the opening round of the year, Centrals have now recorded ten wins and know how to extricate themselves from a difficult position during a match.

They've done it for over a decade now and that's the challenge for the Panthers against Centrals on Sunday at Noarlunga.

South worked as hard as a unit against Port Adelaide on Saturday and they know they've got to do it all again and better against the Bulldogs.

ANZAC Day SANFL blockbuster

Centrals meet Norwood in a Grand Final replay on ANZAC Day

A big crowd is expected at the Adelaide Oval on Monday when Central Districts meet Norwood in Round 4 of the SANFL.

As is tradition the ANZAC Day clash will be a replay of the Grand Final, a match which saw the Dogs sneak home to claim their 9th flag since 2000.

The Redlegs were the feel good story of last season, recovering from a poor start to give rookie coach Nathan Bassett a season to remember.

But all that is now history and the new season offers new challenges.

For Centrals one of those challenges is to replenish the club after some key retirements and a flagging membership.

It is a challenge coach Roy laird will meet head on, and in the build up to ANZAC day he spoke with Roger Wills about how the club is travelling.
