Eyre Peninsula footy results: May 7th

Congratulations to the Saints for posting their first win of the 2011 season - how many more can they take out is now the question. No results have been received from the Great Flinders league except for via the Lock team report so i've rang around and scrambled and this is what I found.

It was Give Cancer the Boot day in the footy with all sides wearing pink armbands, the Blues wearing pink socks and a pink football was used for the game, while the Netballers had Nothing But Pink Netball day with a special pink ribbon netball, with the Tumby teams wearing pink socks and pink bibs and Cougars also participated with wearing pink ribbons.

Game report:

The Eyre United Saints ran out easy winners over a disappointing Lock Roo's by 70 points. Expectations of a close win to Lock were turned on their head by a classy display of team football from the visiting Saints. Returning to the home fold, Clint Beard took on Tonkin at the first centre contest and both sides looked ready to party. The ball see-sawed for the first ten minutes, with only points scored on both sides.

Schramm showed his class early along with Burgoyne, Gale and Fitzgerald, while Roos Zac Tiller and Andrew Heath were running well for Lock. The Saints claimed the first major from a Modra kick to his forward area, which after falling to the ground was crumbed by Schramm. Using the clubrooms wing the work of Andre Health and Andy Hetzel saw Lock reply with minutes. Several more points were added as Evans, Dylan Dunn and Nicholas Gale spearhead the Saints attack, putting Stuart Hentschke, Neill Cummins and K Tiller under continual pressure. Their persistence finally won through with Males, Marshall and Dunn combining to bring up their third goal halfway through the quarter.

Arbon was trying to lift his team with Luke Northcott, Alastair Pearce and Tim Zacher playing with little support other than Zac Tiller who ran the length of the oval on numerous occasions. Males and Burgoyne both added to their tally with ease as the Roo boys looked flat footed. A few minute before the siren Lock slipped into gear with Sammy Britza finding the big sticks from the wing and Northcott making no mistake from holding the ball free in the square. Quarter time Eyre United 7.3 Lock 3.3.

Lock's flat start continued throughout the whole second and third quarter. The team that pushed the Blues was gone, no talking, backing up, shepherding or support. Their team spirit was gone.

The Saints took full advantage of this and went up another gear. Controlling the midfield made it easy to be accurate to the forwards and backed up by their runners they added six goals for the quarter. They worked as a team, with numbers at the stoppages, the running player ready for the handball, plenty of talking and support with rotations working well.

Conversely the Roos were playing behind their men and when abkle to get to the ball, opposition pressure ensured inaccurate kicking to the forward line. Chris Dunn at fuyll back had the body to negate his opposition since most passes were only somewhere within his vicinity. Tonkin was valuable one kick behind the play. Hill, Maitland, Garnaut and Damian and Ryan Modra all had a great quarter and Males continued to add to his goal tally. Half time Eyre United 10.4 were leading Lock 3.5.

Lock started the third quarter with two sallies into the forward area, but were unable to score. From the second rebound the Saints took the ball straight down the centre and Schramm again goaled. For the next five minutes the ball was locked into the Roos half of the ground, but they could not make a mark on the scoreboard. At one stage there were 30 players in tis congested half of the oval. Once able to clear the ball, the Saints made no mistake as they went the closest way home and onto the chest of Marshall at the deserted half forward line.

From the next centre contest, the Roos were able to clear through Clint Beard, Britza and Hetzel to Zac Tiller who made no mistake in notching up Lock's first goal since the first quarter. Arbon, Northcott and Zacher, backed by Andrew Heath, Brad Agars and Andy Hetzel made numerous attempts to rally the troops. Finally Britza was able to find L Health who had got away from his man on a running lead. Once again it was all Saints scoring as an intercepted handpass in the Lock half forward line netted their next goal.

Northcott, K Tiller, Cummins and Hentschke were working overtime as the ball continued to rain in on them. Fitzgerald was having a fantastic quarter, with Schramm like a terrier getting the hard ball and setting up Burgoyne, Jordy Telfer, Gale and Hill. Tonkin, Marshall, Males and Evans were getting plenty of the ball, as they added another 7 goals to the Saints tally. Eyre United 17.5, Lock 5.8 at three quarter time.

With no question of premiership points at this stage, Lock only had pride to play for and they did. In the closest quarter of the day, both sides kicked two goals each. Lock showed more determination than had been seen all day and a clearance found youngster Brody Burrows on his own at the two minute mark and he made no mistake. The ball was being contested with players from both sides willing to get onto the ground looking for possession. The Saints added a major as a dropped mark was soccerred through, then repeated their feat a few minutes later.

Britza had lifted, supported by Zac Tiller bringing Longmire, Zacher, Reynolds and Hetzel into the game with Agars still attempting to lead the forward charges. Three points in a row, capped off by a second goal to Burrows was the reward for their work. Evans, Schramm, Hill, Fitzgerald and Dylan Dunn continued their hard work but one felt the legs were starting to tell on them.

Final scores saw Eyre United well deserved winners at 19.8 to Lock 7.10. One could not find a passenger in the Saints team as their team spirit, work ethic and commitment was evident. Schramm, Chris Dunn, Hill, Burgoyne, Marshall and Fitzgerald were exceptional, with Males' seven goals a game winner.

For Lock Zac Tiller played four solid quarters, A Health continued his great attacking defence game, Agars, A Hetzel and Britza showed bits of their ability, but without the simple things "run, talk, back-up," as requested by the coach in their budget, a win isn't on the near horizon.
