Crows lose Davis for season

Updated May 9, 2011 14:01:00

Adelaide defender Phil Davis has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

The Crows were hopeful the damage to Davis' shoulder might not require a reconstruction, but he will now require six months rehabilitation.

Davis injured his shoulder in the Crows round six victory over the Saints.

Meanwhile, midfielder Matthew Wright will have his knee assessed by specialists after damaging it in demoralising loss to Melbourne on Sunday.

Veteran defender Ben Rutten said the club was in for a difficult post-mortem before hosting a young Gold Coast side growing in confidence.

"I think it's probably the most disappointing four-quarter performance that I've been involved in," he said.

"We had a bad loss against Brisbane a few years ago and Brisbane was at the top of their game then, and as good as anyone for a long period of time.

"But I think that loss yesterday was right up there."

Trengove takes charge to tribunal

Posted May 10, 2011 12:09:00

Melbourne's Jack Trengove will challenge his three-match ban for a dangerous tackle at the AFL tribunal this afternoon.

Trengove was cited for slamming Patrick Dangerfield into the ground during Sunday's match at the MCG, which left the Crows midfielder with concussion.

Trengove could have entered an early guilty plea and copped a two-match suspension.

Sydney's Ted Richards will also challenge his one-match ban for rough conduct against the Bulldogs' Lindsey Gilbee from Saturday's game in Canberra.

Fremantle's Nathan Fyfe will appear before the tribunal as he challenges his $2,400 fine for making contact with an umpire.

Cats craving test against new yardstick

Posted May 10, 2011 15:47:00

Collingwood defender Harry O'Brien says not much time will be spent analysing recent wins over a Geelong side which has clearly changed its game plan, as the two AFL superpowers prepare to clash at the MCG on Friday night.

A 22-point Magpies win in round 19 last year, followed by their 41-point romp in the preliminary final, led to a widespread belief Geelong's golden era was over.

Instead, the Cats have adapted under new coach Chris Scott and sit alongside the Magpies as the only unbeaten teams after seven rounds.

Friday night's blockbuster will be the match of the season so far and O'Brien said the Pies can take some confidence from their recent performances against the Cats.

"You can take out some confidence, they had the measure over us for probably four or five years," O'Brien said.

"Last year, for us to be able to beat them was quite a big thing for us.

"You do take a lot out of that, but we haven't analysed last year's games because we know they've tweaked a few things.

"But you can go into a game with confidence, knowing you can beat that team."

One potential issue for Collingwood is it is coming off the bye, a problem for several teams this season.

"We can't go by what other teams have done and I know teams haven't won games after the break," O'Brien said.

"But if I take myself back (to) last year, we started to gain our momentum after the mid-season break.

"I know it's a bit earlier, but we'll soon find out."

Captain Nick Maxwell, midfielder Ben Johnson and defender Chris Tarrant are all coming off injuries, but O'Brien said the only definite exclusion he knew of would be ruckman Darren Jolly.

"He's our number one ruckman, but we think Cameron Wood is an adequate ruckman," O'Brien said of Jolly's absence with a recurring knee injury.

"He'll be trying his hardest with this opportunity he has to take the next step in his football development and add something to his team."

The Cats are expected to field a near full-strength side, with captain Cameron Ling (hamstring) and forward Steve Johnson (shoulder) both likely to return from injury.

Ruckman Brad Ottens should also play, despite being subbed off with soreness in their most recent match.

Scott said the match will test just how good his side really is.

He said the Magpies' game plan had not changed much since last year and the Cats, like the rest of the competition, were working to catch up.

But he said even if they did not win this time, they expected to be much-improved by the time they met again in the final home and away round.

"I don't think we're playing our best football, I firmly believe that's still to come. But I think we're in pretty good shape to test ourselves," he said.

"But this is not the be-all and end-all.

"We'll put our best foot forward and we're desperate to win the game, but whatever happens we've got the big picture in mind."

The Bloods continue to lead the way

West Adelaide leads the way after six rounds in the SANFL.

For the first time this season, there was a full card of four Saturday afternoon matches

The Bloods were the day's biggest winners, as they atoned for last week's disappointing loss to Port with a 76 point thrashing of the hapless Panthers at Richmond Oval.

Daniel Webb booted five majors as the home side won 20-13-133 to 8-9-57.

Reigning premier Central District is second on the ladder after a 24 point win against Sturt.

The Bulldogs kicked 16-7-103 to the Double Blues' 11-13-79 to post their first win at Unley Oval from their past seven attempts.

Alan Obst and Daniel Havelberg kicked four goals apiece for the Dogs, while Matthew Duldig was again impressive for Sturt with five.

There was also a five-goal haul for Glenelg forward Todd Grima.

It helped his side stage its second big comeback at the Bay this year to beat North Adelaide by seven points.

The Roosters had led by as much as six goals in the third term, but the Tigers fought back to win 16-13-109 to 16-6-102.

Chad Cornes pushed his claims for an immediate recall to Port's AFL side with 28 disposals for the Bays.

James Allan kicked four goals for North, all in the first term.

And the Eagles finished strongly at Woodville Oval to defeat Port by 19 points.

The Magpies led by two points at the final change, but the Eagles booted five goals to two in the last quarter to win 15-7-97 to 12-6-78

Out of favour Crows midfielder Bernie Vince kicked two important final term goals for the home side and finished with a game-high 33 touches.

Eagles to wait on Worsfold contract

Posted May 9, 2011 13:30:00

West Coast will put contract negotiations with coach John Worsfold on hold until the end of the season.

Worsfold, who is out of contract at the end of the season, started the year under immense pressure to produce results after last year's wooden spoon campaign.

The Eagles have shown drastic improvement this year and sit 10th on the table with a 3-3 win-loss record ahead of Sunday's Derby against Fremantle.

But despite the on-field improvement, Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett says a decision on Worsfold's future will not be made until the end of the campaign.

"John's aware of his position, it will happen at the end of the year," Nisbett said.

"John's working with the players to ensure we get the best performance week in, week out and to date we've been extremely competitive.

"It makes John's position a little easier because he's seeing good performances from the players he believes in.

"We're three and three so we've got a lot of work to do yet. But our performances have been much better."

Cornes set on Port for life

Kane Cornes wants to remain at Port Adelaide while demanding his brother Chad be treated with respect in his AFL twilight.

The Cornes brothers have been dropped by Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus this season, both struggling to adjust to new roles.

Their links with ex-Power coach Mark Williams, now a Greater Western Sydney assistant, led to speculation of a trade for the 28-year-old Kane Cornes.

"It is probably the last place I would go to play my footy," he said on Monday.

"I have got three young kids, my eldest starts school next year, so really settled in Adelaide.

"I'd certainly prefer to finish here.

"That is what I was so rapt about when I signed the contract last year, it would take me into my 30s and allow me to finish at this great club that I have had so many great times at."

Cornes said his 31-year-old brother Chad, currently playing in the SANFL, deserved respect.

"What is important to remember with Chad, if he's not the greatest player to play for this club, he's certainly in the top two," he said, nominating ex-captain Warren Tredrea the other.

"Whilst his accolades don't read quite like Warren's, no-one has played with the passion and the courage and has put his body through what he has done for this footy club.

"He's probably the greatest player to ever play for this club, so I hope it's remembered that is the case with Chad, whatever happens for the rest of the year."

Cornes, renowned as a master tagger yet recast a half-back by Primus, was demoted for two weeks, ending his club record 174 consecutive games.

"A couple of years ago I would have thought it was the end of the world, getting dropped," he said.

"But certainly it has been a good challenge for me, my life is in a good place at the moment, I have got a really well balanced life.

"My form wasn't good enough, the side was losing, I went back and had some things to work on.

"I did that and I have come back in ... it only makes you stronger.

"It has been explained, and I understand, that it's better for the side moving forward that we give some other guys opportunities in the centre square and through the midfield.

"I have got my head around that."
