Cameron named Sheedy's successor

Updated October 05, 2012 11:02:58

Greater Western Sydney has announced Leon Cameron will be Kevin Sheedy's successor as Giants head coach.

Cameron has signed a four-year deal, which will involve him working as Sheedy's senior assistant next season before taking on the head coaching role in 2014.

The 40-year will move to the Giants from Hawthorn, where he has served as an assistant to Alastair Clarkson for the past two years.

Mark Williams had been seen as the Giants' head coach of the future but the club's decision to extend the contract of Sheedy to the end of the 2013 season forced his hand.

Williams announced last month he will join Richmond next year as a development coach.

Cameron says the opportunity to work under Sheedy, who won four flags as coach of Essendon, was an offer too good to refuse.

"Where do you go to get an opportunity to work with a four-time premiership coach in your first year and the experience you can gather from that, the advice you get along the journey," he said.

Cameron had been the favourite to take the vacant Port Adelaide head coaching role.

But he acknowledged that working with the young player roster at the Giants was too enticing.

"You don't have to be Einstein with the exciting list the club is building and the work that has already be done by Kevin," Cameron said.

Cameron says his stint at the Hawks will be a bonus for the Giants, who finished their inaugural season in bottom place on the ladder.

"The last two years in the Hawthorn system under Alastair Clarkson has just been so advantageous for me and seeing how an elite club works at the top end," he said.

Sheedy admits Cameron's time at the Hawks helped push him over the line in getting the assistant coaching role.

"I think the experience he has gained (at Hawthorn) with be advantageous to our players and it is all about our player development," he said.

"How quickly can we make this team and this club a great team in the AFL."

Clarkson says Cameron leaves the Hawks with the full blessing of the club.

"Having served nine years as an assistant coach, Leon's breadth of experience and great understanding of the modern game have him well-placed for the transition into senior coaching," he said in a statement.

"His coaching credentials are impressive, and I have no doubt he will make a first-rate senior coach when he succeeds Kevin Sheedy at the end of 2013," he said.

Cameron was also an assistant coach at Western Bulldogs, with whom he also played 172 matches, winning the club's best-and-fairest award in 1993.

He also had a playing stint at the Tigers, making 84 senior appearances.

Tippett to leave Crows

Updated October 02, 2012 10:58:45

Adelaide Crows have confirmed they will be without Kurt Tippett next season after the key forward requested a trade to another club.

Tippett and the Crows put contract negotiations on hold until the end of the season, and Tippett's management informed Adelaide on Tuesday morning they would not be accepting the club's offer.

List manager David Noble said the Crows, who made this season's preliminary finals, did everything they could to keep Tippett at the club.

"We believe that our club has provided Kurt with an outstanding learning environment after drafting him as an extremely inexperienced 18-year old in 2006," he said.

"On top of this we have always put Kurt's best interests at the forefront as well as remunerating him at the top end of our player payments scale.

"The club has now reassessed the current list and will continue its strategy to make sure the team's needs are met so the improved performances of 2012 continue."

As Tippett has not served eight-plus years with the Crows, he is not a free agent and can only join another club through a trade under the AFL's new free agency system.

The Queensland-born 25-year-old is tipped to return to his home state with either the Gold Coast Suns or Brisbane Lions.

However, Collingwood and even premier Sydney are in the race to capture the talented forward's services.

Tippett played 104 games for the Crows after being drafted with pick 32 of the 2006 Draft.

He made his debut in 2008 and went on to kick 188 goals for Adelaide.

Tigers sign Knights from Crows

Updated October 01, 2012 13:40:38

Richmond has picked up Adelaide's Chris Knights in the first completed player move of AFL trade week.

Knights, 26, played eight seasons with the Crows and was a part of Adelaide's finals sides under Neil Craig, but struggled to make an impression under new coach Brenton Sanderson.

He moves to the Tigers as an unrestricted free agent.

"We're delighted to have gained Chris' services, as we believe he'll be a valuable acquisition for our group," Richmond's general manager of football, Craig Cameron, said in a statement.

"Chris has the all-round talent, versatility, and experience to really help us, and we feel that he'll thrive with the opportunities at Tigerland."

Knights said the week leading up to his signing had been "nerve-wracking" but that he was happy to move on with a fresh club.

"I spent eight years with the Adelaide Football Club, which has been fantastic to me," Knights said.

"Your career is a short one, and you just have to make the most of it, and Richmond gave me that opportunity, so I'm just delighted to be here."

In other trade week news, the Fremantle Dockers have made a formal offer for Port Adelaide utility Danyle Pearce.

Pearce is an unrestricted free agent, and the Power has 72 hours to match the Dockers' offer.

Koch confirmed as Power chairman

Updated October 03, 2012 13:27:03

Channel Seven presenter David Koch will take over as chairman of financially-struggling Port Adelaide Football Club.

He will replace Brett Duncanson, who announced his intention to stand aside on the same day Matthew Primus was sacked as coach back in August.

Koch has been the Power's number one ticket holder since 2007.

He lives in Sydney but plans to fly to Adelaide each month for the club's board meetings.

"There is no way I underestimate the challenges going forward, but I'm excited because I think that together we can make a difference and have a great impact as we guide the club through an incredibly exciting period," Koch said.

He said he was determined to see Port Adelaide achieve success again on the football field and be financially strong away from it and planned to help boost the Power's national profile.

"It was put to us that Port Adelaide really wasn't that relevant in Melbourne or Sydney. This state deserves two really strong clubs, the football tradition here, and we want to get Port Adelaide back to where it should be," he told reporters.

Koch grew up at nearby Largs Bay in Adelaide.

"I am lucky enough to be a part of a great family tradition of supporting Port Adelaide," he said.

"My extended family, including cousins and their children, are all Port Adelaide people and they go to every game to support Port Adelaide in the outer. That will never change."

Hawthorn assistant coach Leon Cameron has been strongly tipped to get the job of coaching the Power next season, but has also been interviewed by Greater Western Sydney about a coaching position.

Power chief executive Keith Thomas said a decision on Port Adelaide's coaching job was yet to be made.

"We're right at the tail end of the process. I'm hoping that we can make that announcement if not by the end of this week, very early next week," he said.

Kangaroos promote Daw to senior list

Updated October 02, 2012 08:23:54

North Melbourne's Majak Daw is a step closer to becoming the first Sudan-born AFL player after being upgraded to the club's senior list.

Daw, 21, has spent the past three seasons on the rookie list, the maximum allowable time, meaning the Kangaroos had to either upgrade or cut him.

North's football chief Donald McDonald said Daw has developed to the point where he is ready to make his AFL debut next year, although there are no guarantees.

"In terms of his fitness and knowledge of the game, he's ready to play senior footy now," McDonald told the club's website.

"But Majak will dictate whether he earns a spot or not."

The Kangaroos have also re-signed veteran defender Michael Firrito for next season, midfielder Sam Gibson for the next two years and have elevated rookie Aaron Mullett to their senior list.

Ratten joins Hawks

Updated October 05, 2012 17:04:24

Sacked Carlton coach Brett Ratten has joined Hawthorn's staff for the 2013 season.

Ratten was forced out of the Blues last month after the club failed to make the finals and opted to appoint Mick Malthouse to the senior coaching position.

He will join the Hawks as an assistant to senior coach Alastair Clarkson.

The announcement comes a day after Clarkson's former assistant Leon Cameron joined Kevin Sheedy's staff at Greater Western Sydney.

"Brett is an excellent addition to our coaching line-up and will bring a great deal of experience and coaching nous to our Club," Clarkson said in a statement.

"With Leon's recent departure, it's pleasing that a coach of Brett's calibre can step in immediately and I'm sure he will complement our team of coaches well."

Ratten took over as Blues senior coach in mid-2007 and led the club to the finals from 2009 to 2011.

He was also a premiership player with the Blues in 1995 and a former captain, having played 255 senior matches in total.

Byrnes, Chaplin on the move

Updated October 04, 2012 18:23:51

Shannon Byrnes and Troy Chaplin have become the latest AFL players to shift clubs through free agency, with Melbourne and Richmond the beneficiaries.

Geelong and Port Adelaide opted not to match offers for Byrnes and Chaplin respectively, clearing the way for the Demons and Tigers to add another player to their lists.

Melbourne had an offer accepted for Byrnes, who played in the Cats' premierships in 2007 and 2009.

The Demons' general manager of list management Tim Harrington says the club was delighted to bring in a player and person of Byrnes' calibre.

"He comes from a club that's had a lot of success, particularly finals success over a long period of time, and he's exactly the type of player who can assist our own playing group," Harrington said in a statement.

"We see Shannon fulfilling a specific onfield role and pleasingly he was keen to come to the Melbourne Football Club. We believe he comes here for the right reasons.

"He's not only a quality AFL player in his own right, but he's a player who can help many players on our list realise their own potential."

Richmond has been the busiest club since the introduction of free agency, adding Power defender Chaplin after giving unrestricted free agent Chris Knights a three-year deal earlier this week.

Port Adelaide general manager football Peter Rohde says the Power had considered detailed medical opinion regarding Chaplin and that the club was not willing to match the terms of the Tigers' deal.

"Troy needed serious knee surgery towards the end of 2012 and while we hope he has many years of football left, we're not prepared to commit to the extent Richmond is," Rohde said.

"We would have liked Troy to remain at Alberton, but on terms suitable to the Port Adelaide Football Club as well as the player."

Chaplin is the second player to leave Alberton this week after the Power's Danyle Pearce accepted an offer from Fremantle.

The completion of Byrnes and Chaplin's moves means there are no other outstanding offers on the table.

But Adelaide forward Kurt Tippett has told the Crows he is seeking a trade, and reports suggest that Magpies pair Chris Dawes and Sharrod Wellingham could be on the move from Collingwood.
