Hentschel played 50 games for Woodville West Torrens, but the club says a disc injury in his back has hampered his ability to train this season.
Hentschel retired from the AFL last year after playing 71 games for the Crows.
His worst injury came during a Showdown in 2006, with surgeons likening damage to his knee to what one would expect from a car crash.
Hentschel will remain at the Eagles as the club's football manager.
He says despite the premature end to his playing days, he looks forward to taking up a coaching role at the club.
"A lot of people I guess think I've been unlucky but I'm very grateful for the opportunities I've been given and the career I've had and I've met a lot of great people along the way," he said.
