AFL Wrap: Round 12

Geelong and Collingwood continue to set the pace in the 2011 AFL season, but Carlton appear to be narrowing the gap and are a genuine top 4 contender this year.

St Kilda kept it's season on life support with a victory over the Western Bulldogs on Friday night.

The margin was just 24 points but the win by the Saints was never really in doubt in what was a scrappy match that showed how far the two teams had fallen from the past few years.

On Saturday West Coast continued it's remarkable revival with an easy win over the Crows at Footy Park.

A 7 goal second term set up the win for the Eagles and they now appear to be finals bound, a great turn around from their wooden spoon in 2010.

Saturday night North Melbourne won their 4th match of the year with victory over Gold Coast.

Brent Harvey broke the Roos games record with his 312th appearance, and a 7 goal to zero opening term by North kick started their path to victory.

The other match of the night was a classic blockbuster between two great teams in Geelong and Hawthorn.

It was a see sawing match with first Geelong, and the Hawthorn kicking out a sizeable break thoughout the night.

But a scoreless final term by Hawthorn saw the Cats storm home to win by 5 points, their 6th straight victory over the Hawks since going down to them in the 2008 Grand Final.

The night was a shocker for the Hawks.

Not only did they lose the 4 premiership points, but they lost Jarryd Roughead for the season with an achilles injury and ruckman Brent Renouf is in doubt after spending time in hospital with liver damage following a clash with Podsiadly.

On Sunday Carlton overwhelmed Brisbane by 61 points at Docklands.

Andrew Walker continued his fine form with another 5 goals, while Judd and Murphy were unstoppable, and in a bonus for the Blues Matthew Kruezer made a successful return to the big league after a knee reconstruction ruined his last 12 months.

Despite in accurancy in front of goals, Sydney claimed the points in a hard fought match against Richmond at the SCG.

21 behinds to the Swans allowed Richmond to stay in the contest, but in the final term they found their kicking boots, slotting 4 goals to three to win by 10 points.

Fremantle jumped out to an early lead over Essendon at Subaico and were never headed, winning by 34 points.

The Dockers led 58-18 at half time and despite being outscores in the final term the 4 points were safely in the bank.

For the Bombers reality has hit hard following three straight losses, and their appearence in the finals now appears to be in doubt.

The final match of the round was the traditional Queens Birthday clash bettwen the Pies and the Dees.

Once again Collingwood showed they are a class above, routing Melbourne by 88 points in a dominant display.

Despite missing a host of key plays, the Magpies were far too good and a second straight flag looks well within reach.
